@Zeezyv2 But everyone will still be able to access every shop in Church St during the Bus Gate hour, that’s why this quote, how long you want to quote it, makes no sense unless I’m missing something. It sounds like she thinks access to her shop will be closed.
Thu 19 Aug 2021 · 19:58Reply
@Meat_Paul Even including what the signs will look like and where they’d be placed would have helped I think to help visualise it in-situ. I would have also included sample journeys. For example, getting from east Church St to Islington or Finsbury Park or from the library to Clapton.
Thu 19 Aug 2021 · 19:49Reply
@Meat_Paul I think it could have explained better and more visually than just produce a fairly busy map with colour coded zones, leafs signifying filters etc. I genuinely think so people don’t understand it, which makes it easier to latch onto misinformation: “Church St is closing!! Ahhh!!”
Thu 19 Aug 2021 · 19:26Reply
@LDLDN @Gemma_Champ Why closure though? If you need to driver to a shop between Lordship Road and the High St or Lordship Road and Green Lanes you can still do it 24/7, just need to consider which way you’re coming from. If you make multiple delivers in the area than ‘yes’, it may require a detour.

@spk_n16 @StokeyLTN @nookshop_uk @spencebakery Marton Road is at the edge of the bus gate if you come from the east, and Lordship Rd is at the edge if you come from the west so I don’t see why there should be a problem. @JamesDAustin @thenewlove What’s your answer to the argument that LTN simply displace traffic down fewer main roads, which will get even more congested and polluting as a result?
Mon 16 Aug 2021 · 13:22Reply
@JamesDAustin @thenewlove The problem with nostalgia in this particular case is that some seem to forget or conveniently ignore that were way fewer cars back then. That said the SN High St gyratory c.1970 has been deemed now problematic, so for some it’s an example of misjudged traffic policy by Hackney
Mon 16 Aug 2021 · 13:10Reply
@JamesDAustin @thenewlove As I wrote yesterday, I think that logic escapes certain people who distrust the council on anything, rage against gentrification and what they perceive as its impact on shaping policies such as LTN at the expense of the “indigenous people” of Stoke Newington. Very multifaceted!
Mon 16 Aug 2021 · 12:59Reply
@otis_bedding @thenewlove But my point is why do you need to define it in the first place? Why is that a factor in who has the right to express an opinion on this? Assuming that everyone who has lived in the area for over X years is anti-LTN by default doesn’t make sense to me. Such huge, diverse group.
Mon 16 Aug 2021 · 11:37Reply
@otis_bedding @thenewlove What constitutes ‘Newcomer’ in your view? Genuine question. 5 years? 20? And as a council tax paying local government electing member of the Borough, why should that make a person’s views and preference any less legitimate than someone who has lived in the area longer?
Mon 16 Aug 2021 · 10:03Reply
@otis_bedding @thenewlove If anything, one could argue that in the olden days Stoke Newington was a peaceful and quiet village so if anything, this is all about restoring it back to its former glory of the 18th century when it only had a few hundred people living here! ;)
Mon 16 Aug 2021 · 09:58Reply
@otis_bedding @thenewlove I personally don’t accept the narrative some are pushing for that this is all about the ‘cycling middle class newcomers in the Church St cafes’ punishing the working class ‘born and bred’ locals by forcing them to walk/cycle/bus while polluting their streets. Just my view!
Mon 16 Aug 2021 · 09:55Reply
@otis_bedding @thenewlove What’s ‘established locals’ anyway? Lived in the area for over 20? 30? 40? years? Where does one get a certificate? :)
Mon 16 Aug 2021 · 09:54Reply
@otis_bedding @thenewlove But is that *all* ‘newer members of community loudly asserting themselves & ignoring concerns of established locals’? Surely not, and if so the fact people who are pro-LTN sometimes also happen to be new-ish to the area is completely irrelevant. Many I’d think do not ignore.
Mon 16 Aug 2021 · 09:38Reply
@otis_bedding @thenewlove The reality is, despite what some might argue, it’s a highly mixed area like many parts of London so there’s always going to be friction and at times hostility and ill-feelings when topics like road closures are discussed. It’s sad but unavoidable I fear.
Mon 16 Aug 2021 · 09:33Reply
@otis_bedding @thenewlove My experience of comments by what I’d classify as the “Born and Bred Brigade” is that the views and concerns of people who could be classified as relative newcomers to the area are less important and valid compared to those who have lived in the area for many years. Newcomerism?
Mon 16 Aug 2021 · 08:51Reply

Mon 16 Aug 2021 · 08:43Reply
@Schopflin @thenewlove “the better off you are, the more likely to drive” Out of interest, is that a scientifically proven fact?
Mon 16 Aug 2021 · 07:45Reply
@thenewlove I agree that many of the comments against the plans seem happy to continue with the status quo and at times seem to take a rather selfish view, which considers only their needs and preferences. Human nature.

@thenewlove Someone suggested limiting deliveries to bulk items only for example but then some people may end driving to buy the smaller items so overall it may be better to have vans doing it as many of the items I suspect aren’t within a walking or cycling distance.
Mon 16 Aug 2021 · 07:38Reply
@thenewlove I totally get that :) just putting the arguments and points of view I’m reading from some as in my view some are legitimate grievances and concerns that cannot be brushed aside and dismissed easily.
Mon 16 Aug 2021 · 07:37Reply
@thenewlove But in the case of a Bus Gate and LTN filter it’s not a cycle lane as it’ll prevent them from accessing certain roads, either permanently or during the day. Knowing that everyone else will be diverted down the same few roads could mean congested, polluting roads eg Manor Road.
Mon 16 Aug 2021 · 07:33Reply
@thenewlove They may not be the problem but they’ll be impacted nonetheless. I get why for some of them being told “take a bus, walk or cycle” can come across easily as condescending, not to mention it’s not practical. They have every right to be upset, but overall may be a small group.
Mon 16 Aug 2021 · 07:29Reply
@thenewlove Also, I get the impression that for people for example that live in Lordship Park and Manor Road, given considerable traffic will be diverted their way, even if some people reduce their car journeys, overall it still won’t make much difference to them given the overall increase
Mon 16 Aug 2021 · 07:26Reply
@thenewlove Out of interest what would you say to people who depend on their vehicle for their livelihood to transport work equipment for example? Some comment that other means of transport isn’t an option for them so they are understandably angry and frustrated by the upcoming restrictions.
Mon 16 Aug 2021 · 06:46Reply
@thenewlove I’ve observed quite a bit of “the cycling newcomers won’t tell me where and when I can drive”. Also, some dismiss the legitimacy of the measures claiming strongly it has nothing to do with pollution and is motivated purely by the money the council will generate from issuing fines

@cmtlr @GE0RGYGIRL By the way, there was some objection to the filters that were installed a few months ago in Allen Road, Nevill Road and Clonbrock Road and afterwards as far as I can tell at least it all got very quiet.
Sun 15 Aug 2021 · 23:17Reply
@cmtlr @GE0RGYGIRL I hear there might be a ward forum early next month focusing on all this at one of the local wards. Will be interesting to see how many Twitter and Facebook commenters actually show up and engage, whether it’s online or remote. Hopefully it’ll be advertised effectively.
Sun 15 Aug 2021 · 23:11Reply
@cmtlr @GE0RGYGIRL I’d be curious how many people who object (and even those who are in favour) know who their ward councillors are, but that’s a different issue!!
Sun 15 Aug 2021 · 23:10Reply
@GE0RGYGIRL Yep. Given the Bus Gate is really just a road sign and nothing more, I think that if it’s a complete disaster it’ll get removed. I know some people don’t believe there’s an actual trial, but they probably don’t believe most of what the council tell them anyway.
Sun 15 Aug 2021 · 23:03Reply
@GE0RGYGIRL It most probably will, I don’t know but suspect that will happen. That’s not for me to answer. It wasn’t my plan and I don’t know what the expectation is and how it’ll be addressed. I don’t think LTN is a perfect flawless solution, but long term aren’t the alternatives worse?

@GE0RGYGIRL It feels like the end goal is to reduce the number of cars on the road by getting people to avoid certain journeys, but some people argue that’s not an option for them (work for example) so they’ll end up stuck in traffic and polluting longer and more often than they do today.
Sun 15 Aug 2021 · 22:51Reply
@GE0RGYGIRL I don’t know what the council’s plan and expectation as far as the potential formation of a Stoke Newington ‘Ring Road’ in Green Lanes, Lordship Park, Manor Rd, Northwold Rd, Rectory Rd, SN Rd, Crossway, Matthias Rd and Newington Green. Sounds like these are likely to get busier!

@GE0RGYGIRL I don’t get this, sorry. What does LTN have to do with gentrification? Some people seem to associate a Bus Gate in Church St as some sort of conspiracy by the ‘newbie middle class yuppies’ who are happy to displace traffic and pollution onto council estates. Really?? :)

@cmtlr Thanks. I only remember reading it in a tweet I believe by a former councillor. It was a lengthy PDF (link no longer working). I cannot remember the formal consultation process so am not surprised it has been a surprise to many as I actually take interest in such things.
Sun 15 Aug 2021 · 22:19Reply
@cmtlr @GE0RGYGIRL I believe in some cases the issue is for example time to get to the GP at the top of Albion Road near Church St. Today in the day it’s a relatively quick journey if you come from the High St or even side streets east of the future Bus Gate.
Sun 15 Aug 2021 · 22:16Reply
@GE0RGYGIRL By the way, reading many of the comments I can’t help feeling that for some this is just an excuse to air (sometimes aggressive and very hostile) anti-establishment, anti-Labour, anti-council, anti-gentrification, anti-middle class sentiments. Not helping their supposed cause IMO
Sun 15 Aug 2021 · 22:12Reply
@GE0RGYGIRL Consultation as I understand it is meant to share ideas, learn about people views and issues in order to tweak or in some cases drop the idea completely but it’s not a vote. Some who are against the Bus Gate seem very confident they are the majority for some reason. Go figure.
Sun 15 Aug 2021 · 22:11Reply
@GE0RGYGIRL My point was that there are different ways to get to people across society, with social media being just one channel. I suspect the council has a procedure when it comes to advertising consultations. My sense is it’s a process that engages very small part of the community
Sun 15 Aug 2021 · 22:06Reply
@GE0RGYGIRL Of course! :) the fact quite a few people seem surprised by the change suggests the consultation perhaps could have been advertised more effectively. I don’t know how the council approaches that.
Sun 15 Aug 2021 · 22:04Reply
@GE0RGYGIRL I agree. I don’t remember how it was advertised but I’m pretty sure it could have been done better. I’d even expect it to be advertised in popular social media forums like Stokey Folks on Facebook, rather than simply the council’s website, Twitter and perhaps on lampposts.
Sun 15 Aug 2021 · 22:02Reply
@GE0RGYGIRL My sense is that 95% of locals who become aware of a consultation in their area don’t engage with it and will only get vocal and on Facebook and Twitter after a decision has been made. Those also seem to often mistake consultation for a referendum when it is not. It’s not a vote.
Sun 15 Aug 2021 · 21:59Reply
@GE0RGYGIRL How do you know that? Genuine question. I personally couldn’t say either way. I am curious to what extent the consultation was advertised effectively so at many people would know about it. How many of those turned up or submitted their response is a different matter.
Sun 15 Aug 2021 · 21:53Reply
@GE0RGYGIRL Also, these plans were written about in the local press a year ago hackneycitizen.co.uk/2020/09/22/rad… and I don’t remember many people being as vocal against it as they are now, a month before it’s going ahead. I accept some didn’t know, but it wasn’t exactly a big secret by the council.
Sun 15 Aug 2021 · 21:50Reply
@GE0RGYGIRL I do think that consultations aren’t always as visible as one would expect, and can be a rather low-key process. For something like this you’d expect a stall in Church St outside the Red Lion during a few weekends :) I don’t remember if there were even notices on the street.
Sun 15 Aug 2021 · 21:47Reply
@GE0RGYGIRL Out of curiosity, why do you say these kind of consultations do not easily reach the elderly and disabled people? I also don’t understand how in this context disabled people especially can be referred as a single group. It’s such hugely diverse group across many aspects.
Sun 15 Aug 2021 · 21:40Reply
@cmtlr Do you know by any chance how the consultation was advertised at the time? I read a few comments here and there from people complaining they ‘weren’t consulted’. It does feel sometimes consultations can be a rather low-key procedure. Not expecting billboards mind you!

@otis_bedding @Stokebrewington You had to know an area well before Google Maps/GPS to know how you can to cut through side streets. Looks like in recent years GPS-enabled rat-running has made the situation far worse. That said, wouldn’t have considered driving through Church St rat-running.
Wed 11 Aug 2021 · 10:53Reply
@otis_bedding @Stokebrewington Using ANPR and check the address of every car that passes to determine if it breaches the LTN filter? Informing in a sign to drivers which ones are allowed (living in a list of allowed streets) doesn’t sound practical. Maybe it’s just me :)
Wed 11 Aug 2021 · 09:22Reply
@otis_bedding The point as I understand it that a lot of cars do cut across between Albion Road and the High St so the idea behind the LTN is to eliminate rat-running through these areas. The new Bus Gate will also mean Church St isn’t an option during the day, so BIG change. Let’s see.
Wed 11 Aug 2021 · 09:12Reply
@RosedaleAction Yes. To get Barton House if you are east of the A10 you’ll need to drive down to Crossway, make your way up Matthias Road, Newington Green and up Albion Road. No way to cut through anywhere else between Church St and Crossway.

There’s a lot of focus on the Church St Bus Gate with incorrect headlines stating ‘Cars are banned from Hackney street’. Many people seem to miss the five ‘new’ ‘inclosed’ neighbourhoods you can go in and out of, but not drive through. The north one is now cut off from Church St https://t.co/Lyskdou4EC

@StokeyLTN @BletchleySam @nookshop_uk @spencebakery Way out of Church St 7am-7pm east of the Bus Gate is only Marton Rd, Defoe Rd and Kersley Rd as Yoakley Rd and Bouverie Rd will have the filter. @BletchleySam @StokeyLTN @nookshop_uk @spencebakery Marton Road down to Ayrsome Road, Oldfield Rd, Kynaston Road and Defoe Road is another U-Turn option east of the Bus Gate
Wed 11 Aug 2021 · 08:26Reply
@BletchleySam @StokeyLTN @nookshop_uk @spencebakery That’s the only option as far as I can tell. The whole logic of creating the five neighbourhoods around Church St is that cars that use the side streets go to those streets mainly, rather than use Church St.
Wed 11 Aug 2021 · 08:23Reply
@toosweet2b Not true. Cars aren’t banned during the day. Cars can drive only along half of the street from each direction till the Bus Gate that’s in the middle. This means Church St isn’t an option to get from west to east, east to west, and is used in the day only to access side streets.
Wed 11 Aug 2021 · 06:42Reply
@BletchleySam @StokeyLTN @nookshop_uk @spencebakery On the west side, another U-turn will be Woodlea Rd and then Hawksley Rd to Albion Rd. Again, it’s a narrow residential street so large vehicles especially could become an issue. https://t.co/ObbwDnk06w
