Would love to hear from people who took part in the “Boycott Nando’s” campaign in Church St. What drew you to the campaign? Would you have protested if it was any other large chain? @HackneyYIMBY @LynRennick To your point earlier about people not protesting against Wholefoods (the site was originally Fresh & Wild), the author states “OK, there's a Fresh & Wild, but we protested against that, too”. Though I gather that protest was as high profile as the one against Nando’s.
Sat 26 Mar 2022 · 17:23Reply
@HackneyYIMBY @LynRennick “The arrival of one huge chain, willing to pay a premium price for its spot, will push the rents up for all the businesses, driving them out and opening the door for the next multinational, and the next.” It just happened to be Nando’s. “One huge chain” is very generic.
Sat 26 Mar 2022 · 17:19Reply
@HackneyYIMBY @LynRennick Fresh & Wild was as purpose-built retail unit as part of a larger development after the owner of the timber yard cashed in and JoJo opened in a small unit that was a restaurant. Can’t see why anyone would have issue with either given the context of where/how/why they opened.
Sat 26 Mar 2022 · 17:16Reply
@HackneyYIMBY @LynRennick Sainsbury’s was the brand associated with the development but not the centre of it. There were concerns about delivery routes via High St and Wilmer Place. The original plan was 68 homes in a six-storey development above the supermarket, which raised a host of other concerns
Sat 26 Mar 2022 · 17:09Reply
@HackneyYIMBY @LynRennick Well, it didn’t if you care to be more specific. The redevelopment of the Vortex site was controversial in nature I believe any chain would have faced such opposition by some locals but please share evidence to suggest otherwise. I’m intrigued to see what you can share. Thanks.
Sat 26 Mar 2022 · 13:06Reply
@HackneyYIMBY @LynRennick The objection to Nando’s was fuelled by the fact it was replacing a cultural local landmark that was the Vortex Jazz Bar, or are you suggesting there was another motive? How’s that linked to opposing a large scale unaffordable housing development with a supermarket by the way?

@charliechar I think people are more protective of Church St than the High St when it comes to large chains. As it’s a conservation area and shops cannot be merged, the small footprint makes it less appealing for them. Nando’s and Wholefoods are in new-ish purpose-built retail units.

@charliechar It was inevitable once the bank branches closed. 4 out of the 5 closed in the last 5 or so years. HSBC is now a Post Office, Lloyds is Costa, Santander is a Pound Shop. NatWet to become Starbucks when the last bank in Stoke Newington closes??

@HowarthCharles @AkashMapara Well, I’d argue it’s far more of a tourist destination and more affluent area compared to Stoke Newington (everything is relative) so I suppose those chains decided it’s worth it opening a very small branch. In reality, most have stayed away from Church St.. for now.
Thu 24 Mar 2022 · 08:19Reply
@HowarthCharles @AkashMapara Chains can move into a conservation area, they aren’t banned. My point was that the small shops, which cannot be extended, make them less appealing for big brands that favour larger sites. Pret won’t bother with a tiny shop in Church St for example.

@AkashMapara @HowarthCharles Also JoJo Maman Bébé in Church St. Sports Direct. Pizza Hut. Halfords in the High St closed last years. Church St is a conservation area so small shops cannot be merged hence its less appealing to chains who’ll target larger retail units in the High St.

@A_d_e_s_a_n_u Large site (originally two shops) so only a few type of businesses can afford such footprint in such prime location. It would be great to have a pet shop, cheese monger or other things people said we lacked in the area, but the reality is they won’t be able to afford such site

@kosintime @thenewlove I don’t think it’s really a question of “what we need” but more what viable business can realistically operate successfully in a site of that size. An independent may likely struggle with the rent etc. so that’s why chains, usually coffee, step into the gap.
Wed 23 Mar 2022 · 15:26Reply
@thenewlove The impact of Sainsbury’s on local shops, deliveries via Wilmer Place and the High St as well as other concerns were one aspect of the opposition to the large scale development. Full details here: stokeylocal.org.uk a Pret on the corner isn’t the same at all in that regard.
Wed 23 Mar 2022 · 15:20Reply
@thenewlove I don’t see the link. The opposition to the large scale development of the site that happened to include a Sainsbury’s was fuelled to a large extent by the scale of the towering block, impact on biodiversity on Abney, small number of affordable housing in the scheme and more.
Wed 23 Mar 2022 · 15:17Original
Any suggestions for a different business that can occupy such a large site and not go under within three months?? Former HSBC branch now a Post Office, former Lloyds branch now Costa, former Santander branch is a Pound Shop. Not that many options given the size of the site. x.com/StokeyUpdates/…

@devske5 @ClissoldLabour @metecoban92 Certain adjustments like allowing Blue Badge permit holders access through the Bus Gate have been made based on feedback. The feedback is meant as I understand it to help improve the scheme if possible, not justify removing it completely as it’s not a vote and LTNs are happening

Someone REALLY doesn’t like the LTN enforcement camera in Oldfield Road/Sandbrook Road (@ClissoldLabour @metecoban92). 4th time it’s been tampered with unless the wire is always being pulled out by birds and the camera moves every time it’s very windy. Maybe! https://t.co/1XcZpWD9PI

@ClissoldLabour @metecoban92 They don’t appear to be very good at their job frankly. As we both know, there’s an awful lot riding on effective, high-quality comms when dealing with such divisive scheme. Comms is everything. This simply isn’t good enough.
Sun 20 Mar 2022 · 09:30Reply
@ClissoldLabour @metecoban92 The council really isn’t helping itself here and it’s disappointing. Signage and comms from day 1 have been substandard and I’m afraid things like this only discredit the scheme and give some objectors more reasons to claim the scheme is rigged and isn’t handled professionally.
Sun 20 Mar 2022 · 09:24Reply
@ClissoldLabour @metecoban92 But the link in the leaflet is shorter and more intuitive and was working after it didn’t when the report was first published so I’d think it’s just a case of ensuring it stays up and stops getting ‘broken’. @Stokebrewington @RoyWats09829184 But it is and that’s the whole point. Make short journeys by car inconvenient that people realise after a while it’s not worth the hassle and consider other options. The thinking is that’ll bring pollution levels down in the long-term when car usage EVERYWHERE drops, hopefully!

@Stokebrewington @RoyWats09829184 Three Hackney LTNs have been made permanent recently: London Fields, Hackney Downs and Walford Rd area. Opposing LTNs is a bit like opposing the smoking ban in 2007. Hackney, and London more widely, have ambitious green targets and LTNs are considered the way to help meet them.

@OldAndLame There’s a “stargazing” camera in Oldfield Rd/Sandbrook Rd which was adjusted twice before for the same reason so it’s a game of ‘cat and mouse’ with people who tamper with the cameras as I doubt it was caused by the wind or a bird. Signs also get vandalised.

What’s up with so many Bus Gate road signs facing every possible direction except for the correct one? Some like this one still state incorrectly Church St is a ‘no through route’ failing to include the 7am-7pm operating hours. The signage has been such a mess. https://t.co/yzYvs2I8n1

Hi @metecoban92. Is the Stoke Newington Church St pavement widening consultation for the east side of the street still going ahead please, or has the plan been postponed or abandoned? Thanks.

@Schopflin Well, there could be different reasons why a business closes such retirement, moving away, personal reasons etc. so not just a matter of whether it appears to be doing well or not.

@MarkaHillier Thanks! this is the occupancy survey I maintain which charts the history of each shop in Church St since the 1840s => bit.ly/amirstokey

@graemebulcraig Also, as leases sometimes end at the end of the year, almost every February-March a couple of shops and restaurants in Church St close and within a few weeks you see the site being prepared for the next occupant. It’s rare for a commercial property in Church St to remain empty.

@graemebulcraig Perhaps in some cases, the owner simply moves on or retires even. Some of these restaurants have been around for a very long time and unless you find someone to buy the restaurant from you when you decide to move on, you don’t have many options.

@ttfmgill Yes. Church St is living organism changing constantly. There used to be 14 confectioners at one point! => public.flourish.studio/visualisation/…

@wakefieldsarah People also day that about estate agents, cafes, restaurants, gift shops and pretty much everything else it seems :) better than having it vacant for years like the garden centre and Chinese restaurant is my view. Small shops, high rent and high business rates - not easy.

@London_UXD @GlynnAlison @spencebakery I was thinking the same thing. I do wonder what was the thinking behind this. I felt they perfected the system in the last year. Also meant customers didn’t pick up things themselves from baskets like plain bagels.

The locksmith across the street told me an optician may open there and also that Namaste vegetarian restaurant at no. 56 Church St closed as well. He said he thinks it’s unlikely Anglo Spice Grill at nos. 60-62, which was due to open last summer following refurb will reopen. x.com/StokeyUpdates/…

@iambrianjones If you examine the prominent anti-LTN Twitter accounts you’ll see the average number of followers is about 300 and that demonstrations attract from what I’d seen a small group of people. Social media can easily amplify their sentiment, especially as they tend to often “shout”
Tue 01 Mar 2022 · 10:45Reply
@devske5 @iambrianjones Did you read the article? “Residents' feedback reporting increased traffic on Northwold Road has led the council to develop proposals which include restricting heavy goods vehicles with width restrictions or the addition of a traffic filter.”
Tue 01 Mar 2022 · 10:27Reply
@iambrianjones @devske5 Yes. A consultation is basically an invitation for certain people to say why they don’t like something. They may have very legitimate reasons and grievances but it doesn’t make those the majority and again, it’s not a referendum.
Tue 01 Mar 2022 · 10:25Reply
@devske5 @iambrianjones A consultation ultimately it about sourcing opinions to discover potential improvements that were not considered initially and learn about people’s views. Most of which do not understand or think about the bigger picture in my opinion so I wouldn’t trust them to make policies.
Tue 01 Mar 2022 · 10:22Reply
@devske5 @iambrianjones My take on it is that the majority of people that respond to a consultation are the ones who are against what’s being proposed and therefore register their disapproval and anger. More so than those are in favour. It can create a false impression of the real sentiment.
Tue 01 Mar 2022 · 10:18Reply
@DrCSyn But these kind of policies aren’t determined by a referendum and the democratic aspect is the fact the policies are set by democratically elected representatives that drive an agenda. They can always be voted out if enough people who don’t agree with their policies go and vote.

@DrCSyn The money raised is ring fenced to be used for transport-related initiatives in the borough as far as I’m aware. @ClissoldLabour may be able to clarify.

@Christo28907011 @spencebakery It wasn’t great on a rainy day for sure, but queuing outside felt far more orderly and efficient than the mayhem inside on a busy weekend. Might be just me, but never knew where to queue and the order in which customers were being served felt almost random.
Tue 01 Mar 2022 · 08:35Original
Interesting: “64% of responses to the consultation page said none of the LTNs filters should be made permanent. The council however, says people who use a car or van were overrepresented in the overall results despite Hackney's low car ownership rates.” Same to happen in SN? x.com/hackneygazette…

@thomashowson @spencebakery Me too! Always got quite hectic and disorderly inside on weekends with three different queues in two different directions! I’m surprised they changed back. Thought it also allowed to make better use of the indoor space.
