@doorstepbeauty True to an extent I suppose, though some may argue that high rent, high costs (post-COVID, post-Brexit), cost of living crisis and its impact on trade could mean businesses are spending less on appearance and much needed refurbishment in some cases. Some are just happy to be open

@doorstepbeauty Unfortunately, the High St in my opinion is dominated more by the various businesses than the residents in the flats above, and significant footfall by visitors who don’t live in that street also means less care and consideration to the surroundings. It’s a main, busy, noisy road

I know that’s not the case and doubt it’s ‘reserved’ for residents of the street. Curious to see how the proposed ones will be used.

@spk_n16 @HowarthCharles @LondonParklet In Japan you must first prove you have a parking space within 2 km distance of your residence before a car is sold to you. The proof of parking space is in the form of a “Parking Space Certificate” and it is issued by the local police.

@HowarthCharles @LondonParklet With the exception of Nevill Rd and Brodia Rd, the others are off Church St and meant to provide much needed public seating as the fire station forecourt and the Levy Memorial Garden in Yoakley Rd aren’t sufficient or adequate.

@HowarthCharles @gjyevans @LondonParklet I suspect some would argue the constant need for housing trumps the need for parking given a car is, in some cases, one of several options to move around. In any case, a parklet, depending on size takes 2-3 parking bays depending on its size.

@doorstepbeauty ruins? :) it's groty in places like most urban high streets in inner-city districts but I wouldn't describe as a something similar to a bomb site. Church St is smarter in comparison, though it's not a busy, main thoroughfare as the High St so not actually comparable.

@StokeySye It’s rare for a site in Church St to be vacant for more than a year. Garden Centre (no. 175) and Haikksun (no. 179) are rare exceptions. Will be interesting to see when no. 115 (formerly Golden Dragon) will reopen once the building has a new owner (if it doesn’t already).

It’s worth mentioning that one of the current vacant sites in Church Street is a yard at no. 138 that was an MOT garage. If you exclude it given it’s not an empty site a retail or eatery can move into relatively easily, the vacancy rate drops to a mere 2.5%. x.com/StokeyUpdates/…

To be fair, you get that behaviour around, especially in the summer nights, anyway. Doubt a parklet will make much difference.

@thenewlove I don’t think it’s realistic. The council’s challenge I suspect is the maintenance of the parklets, so apart from the revenue aspect of licencing, they’re looking to offload the upkeep onto local businesses it seems. Also, trying to avoid having seating in parklets at night.

@LondonParklet Why would a local business licence it? To promote the business somehow maybe? With the impact of cost of living, post-covid, high rent etc. I can’t imagine licensing a parklet will be a priority for the local cafes and restaurants. Also, they aren’t going to be close to them.

I think this is an interesting approach to minimise some parklets becoming after hours hangout spot, but if they’ll be licences to businesses, it also means the parklets aren’t public seating as they’ll be an extension of cafes and restaurants, right?

When news about the parklets off Church St broke a few weeks ago, there was concern about anti-social behaviour at night. However, the proposal is the parklets won’t have fixed seating and local businesses will licence them and provide tables and chairs. x.com/StokeyUpdates/…

@_cyberfig By the way, of the 120 commercial properties in Church Street, only 4 are vacant with no known plans to reopen soon as far as I’m aware, and three of those have been vacant for years. That’s less than 5%, which is very good news. Rare for a site to remain vacant for too long.
