@SLH68141003 @Christo28907011 From some of the comments from various people very recently the impression is that quite a few eateries in the area offer a rather rich selection of vegetarian options and not just ‘one sad afterthought of an option’.

@Christo28907011 I like to have the option to choose what I eat and the diversity of many options, which I believe we have to a large extent. I’m not a fan of people trying to make other people feel guilty about they choose to eat, meat in this case. That’s all.

I’m guessing these sticker street signs from a few years ago were the cheapest option in the catalogue. Many have peeled off completely and rest like this one in Bouverie Rd just now look like they are about to. Surely durability should have been a key consideration. https://t.co/K92SxQQA2L

@RantyHighwayman The other thing though, seeing the sign make distract drivers from the Bus Gate signs. I thought initially it’ll be good to slow drivers so they get a chance to read the 7am-7pm restriction, but a ‘priority’ sign may give the wrong impression the Bus Gate isn’t actually there.
Sat 30 Jul 2022 · 13:00Reply
@RantyHighwayman What about cyclists? Quite a lot use the road. If the sign says “traffic” rather than “vehicles” I’d think that takes care of that and eastbound vehicles would need to give priority to cyclists. Would that actually work in reality??

Could the Bus Gate one day become one lane wide with a “Priority over oncoming traffic” sign to allow for pavement widening at that narrow spot? Ongoing discussion whether blended crossings should include tactile paving given they still provide vehicle or cycle access to a side road, but at the same time is also meant to be a continuous part of the pavement.

I bet the council has better things to do than manage bookings for a splash pad. The reason given is very clear: “…Ensure the splash pad runs smoothly and protect new grass landscaping….” Anyone complaining about the need to book didn’t read this or is too selfish to care.

@VincentStops Doesn’t the design of a blended crossing need to comply with accessibility laws for urban planning? (Assuming those exist). If so, is it a case that the design isn’t violating such accessibility laws?

@carvalhoCAP @clissoldpeople But as you say, if most riders use Google Maps to navigate there’s no way they’ll know where the parking bays are, and even if they knew where the handful of them are, as I mentioned earlier, there are too many benefits to ride to your destination rather the walk from a bay.

@Yashman67 @jennyfmorgan @StokeyCab @SLH68141003 @nizecab @unluckycab @TheLTDA Bottom line, the expected positive impact as far as getting more and more people to think twice before they go into a car for a short journey isn’t going to happen overnight. Ask yourself how many drivers around you are driving a short distance. Some should consider alternatives.

@Yashman67 @jennyfmorgan @StokeyCab @SLH68141003 @nizecab @unluckycab @TheLTDA There are hundreds of LTNs in London. You’re ‘monitoring’ all of them? :)

You’re not a human traffic monitoring machine :) I get you don’t see empty streets of course, and maybe in some cases there has been a certain increase in traffic, but your subjective impression isn’t a way of determine if evaporation does or doesn’t happen.
Mon 25 Jul 2022 · 07:54Reply
@Yashman67 @jennyfmorgan @StokeyCab @SLH68141003 @nizecab @unluckycab @TheLTDA The main issue are the short journeys, which are less than 2 miles. That’s a relatively short distance that surely doesn’t always require a car. There’ll be far less congestion once enough people avoid those short car journeys. It won’t happen overnight.

@Yashman67 @jennyfmorgan @StokeyCab @SLH68141003 @nizecab @unluckycab @TheLTDA Who is to determine what’s “essential”? That’s extremely subjective. No local authority will want to start getting into that and tell people what’s considered “essential”. The Bus Gate in Stoke Newington by the way is open to Blue Badge registered cars, in case you weren’t aware.

Traffic calming measures are a level playing field that don’t favour people who can afford an electric car or paying to use a road or drive through a filter. It doesn’t matter how rich you are - you cannot use your car. Isn’t it great?

Where do people drive such short distance?? Is a car really the only way they can make such short journey? Surely that’s not the case for all of them.

@Yashman67 @jennyfmorgan @SLH68141003 @nizecab @unluckycab @TheLTDA I can only comment on the area I know well and accept traffic claiming measures may not be as effective everywhere. In Stoke Newington, after 10 months, my personal view (for what it’s worth) is that the negative impact of the Bus Gate has been minimal with considerable benefits.

@Yashman67 @jennyfmorgan @SLH68141003 @nizecab @unluckycab @TheLTDA Obviously that was meant to be “I was NOT going to..”. I find it fascinating that some people who object to LTNs refer to photos of normal traffic levels in a ‘boundary road’ as “selective” while photos of congestion are quickly hailed as “compelling evidence” :)

@jennyfmorgan @Yashman67 @SLH68141003 @nizecab @unluckycab @TheLTDA Some people seem to think that behaviour change happens overnight and that a day after a Bus Gate is introduced you magically have less cars on the road. It’ll take a while for so many SHORT car journeys (less than 2miles) to be reduced as alternatives become viable. Let’s see!

@mortonpeas What does ‘cyclists jumping red lights’ have to do with some motorists not obeying “no motor vehicles”? London boroughs, especially Hackney and Islington are filled with them everywhere you turn. Bottom line is, not noticing or recognising a traffic sign isn’t a valid excuse.
Thu 21 Jul 2022 · 07:49Reply
@mortonpeas That “stupid” sign has been part of the Highway Code since 1964. Being able to “notice” traffic signs and knowing what they mean is the most minimum requirement from anyone who goes behind a wheel. Some people don’t seem to “notice” speed limit and Stop signs too you know..
Wed 20 Jul 2022 · 23:03Reply
@68stano @mortonpeas Yes, it would appear so. Perhaps that person is aware that some drivers don’t obey certain road and traffic signs such as “no motor vehicles” and in order to prevent possible collision at the junction concluded the safest option is to place traffic lights there just in case.

Thu 14 Jul 2022 · 08:48Reply
@Itsnotbay But as these are unrelated, I don’t see what is there to complain about. The recent roadwork in the Lordship Road alleyway was utility-related I believe as was the one in Church St around Clissold Road. Some of it may have scheduled for the summer to avoid doing it in the winter.
Thu 14 Jul 2022 · 08:42Original
Obviously, if you place a road sign this close to a loading bay it’ll keep getting banged up. The ‘no motor vehicles’ is meant to point at the Bus Gate. You cannot see it now when driving towards the Bus Gate. https://t.co/OV6s2Dx0u7

Wed 13 Jul 2022 · 19:41Reply
@avellana_avers @mayorofhackney @metecoban92 Not necessarily. Why? You have two way traffic at the moment, and you’ll still have two way traffic when the street is narrower. Parking cars tend to slow traffic at the moment already at certain points. The widening won’t happen there. There’s low traffic levels as well.

@avellana_avers @mayorofhackney @metecoban92 Are buses slow on Church St? During the day when there’s little traffic? @old_school_alps If you look at the number of dedicated parking bays in Stoke Newington (I’m aware of only a handful) I don’t think it’ll work. The whole point of the scheme is the convenience of literally dumping them at your destination. That flexibility is what makes it so appealing.

@AnneShackleton To be fair, Church St has been like this for many years on a sunny weekend with a very low commercial vacancy rate. My point was that a 10-month LTN hasn’t had the dramatic detrimental effect some argue. The impact will need to be assessed after a few years, not months.

Parkers Pets, in 147 Stoke Newington High St closed in 2018 after 43 years because, according to an article in the Hackney Gazette at the time: 'the owner now wants to convert the shop into a restaurant.' It has been a pop-up site since stokeypopup.com
Sat 09 Jul 2022 · 21:04Reply
@jaycey_ By the way, you do realise that businesses close all the time for many different reasons such as owner dies, moves, retires, isn’t well, poorly run business, family dispute, the ‘wrong’ business in the ‘wrong’ place. You cannot attribute every business closure to LTN you know.
Sat 09 Jul 2022 · 20:59Reply
@jaycey_ Here are the changes in Church Street since 2016. There has always been annual change and that’s the reality of a commercial street. LTN has nothing to do with it, not after 10 months at least. Let’s see in a few years. Vacancy rate now is only 3%. That’s minuscule. https://t.co/ryDMFSLOsb
Sat 09 Jul 2022 · 20:56Reply
@jaycey_ If you know Church St you’d know that it was always fairly quiet on weekdays, and obviously the warmer it gets more people are out and especially during the weekend. It’s buzzing on weekends as it has been for many years. Nothing new or unknown about that.
Sat 09 Jul 2022 · 20:54Reply
@jaycey_ Of the 120 commercial properties in Church St, about 8 close and change every year. This year hasn’t been any different, and actually the number has gone down a bit. Very rare for a site to remain vacant for too long. You check here yourself: bit.ly/amirstokey

@visitcamberwell @hoxtonrich @steve_race In the case of Church St, traffic was predominantly through traffic as far as I’m aware (10,000 vehicles a day according to the council) and I very much doubt local businesses benefited from such passing traffic. An off licence told me a few drivers would stop to buy a few bits.
Sat 09 Jul 2022 · 20:18Reply
@MillRoad4People @alexspencerCAM The majority of businesses in Church St are eateries (cafes, bistros, restaurants), small retailers (flowers, gifts, clothes etc.), estate agents and off licences. All are accessible by car 24/7, but a daytime Bus Gate means you may need to come from the other end of the street
Sat 09 Jul 2022 · 20:13Reply
@MillRoad4People @alexspencerCAM A local minicab and garage have also voiced concerns, which is understandable to a degree, but the bottom line is they are two out of approximately 115 local businesses on the street, and their circumstances i.e. highly dependent on cars, in my view is the exception.
Sat 09 Jul 2022 · 20:09Reply
@MillRoad4People @alexspencerCAM Retailers hugely overestimate how many of their customers drive to their business, as various studies have shown. Businesses are most likely to be impacted negatively to an extent are those for example making deliveries or selling bulky items customers drive over to collect.

@Roger89835988 @London_UXD Did it include detailed measurements? A representative of the local business association who had a tour of the plan with the council told me about the slab-wide widening of the section opposite Nando’s, so I consider it credible. Don’t imagine anything less will be worth it.
Fri 08 Jul 2022 · 08:54Reply
@Roger89835988 @London_UXD Based on what? It’s going to be an extra slab (60cm/2ft) opposite Nando’s where the road is narrower than outside II Bacio so I’d expect it to be at least that wide and possibly a bit more.
Fri 08 Jul 2022 · 08:36Original
What shop would you like to see open at 115 Stoke Newington Church St, which is vacant currently (formerly Golden Dragon fish & chips)?
Fri 08 Jul 2022 · 07:49Reply
@London_UXD “All Shop Fronts applicants will receive a visit from a Shop Front Service Officer to carry out a measurement at the premises and to assess the suitability of having a shop front licence at this location and the appropriate m2 fee for space used.”
Fri 08 Jul 2022 · 07:35Reply
@London_UXD Yes. Agree. It’s actually a Shop Front Trading Licence that’s needed hackney.gov.uk/markets-shop-f… terms and conditions of the licence are listed here: drive.google.com/file/d/1tNCKuK…
Fri 08 Jul 2022 · 07:26Reply
@London_UXD No idea what are the consideration for granting a pavement licence, assuming they have one, and the extent to which the width of the pavement is taken into consideration. Fruit & Veg next door also makes walking on the pavement challenging at times. Pavement widening is coming :)
Fri 08 Jul 2022 · 07:13Reply
@VeraSabeva If you used to drive to II Bacio from the High St and park anywhere before Lordship Rd then nothing has changed. If you drove from Albion Rd or Green Lanes AND parked after the Red Lion, then before 7pm you’ll need to come from the High St. Is a bus an option for you?
Fri 08 Jul 2022 · 06:53Reply
@VeraSabeva Funny you say that, because it’s not closed. Daytime through traffic is limit to buses and Blue Badge holders. You’ll be surprised to learn the street is very much open. You can drive to any address 24/7 though depending where you come from the journey may be a bit longer.
Thu 07 Jul 2022 · 23:48Reply
@hutchosuperkin1 Why not? Do you expect to have any sort of negative impact on their trade? I very much doubt it. It’s a much loved and long-standing local business. I see no issue sharing online an observation and something that bothered me. It’s far from “naming and shaming” you know.
Thu 07 Jul 2022 · 23:41Reply
@hutchosuperkin1 Whether they are cool isn’t the point. I pointed out something that bothered me when I saw it. It may not bother you as much as that very much ok. I’m glad their business is doing well but can at the same time highlight an issue I think (you can disagree) they can improve on
Thu 07 Jul 2022 · 23:34Reply
@hutchosuperkin1 Hopefully and that’s one of the benefits of the pavement widening of course, which will hopefully help such local businesses. My observation when I took the photo was the table was placed in the middle of the pavement with little consideration for people using the pavement
Thu 07 Jul 2022 · 23:27Reply
@hutchosuperkin1 I’d be surprised if they have pavement licence to occupy that much space of the pavement’s width. Length isn’t really an issue. They can stretch as far as the fire station as far as I care as long as there’s enough room for people to use the pavement i.e. the public realm.
Thu 07 Jul 2022 · 23:21Reply
@hutchosuperkin1 Within reason, I agree, but I don’t think it should be the at the expense of pedestrians by taking that much space of the pavement. No issue with them taking over space in front of closed shops permitting there’s sufficient pavement space.

@HowarthCharles It closed over a month ago (‘temporarily’ according to Google). Has it reopened since? Someone here mentioned they closed while looking for pizza chefs. No idea if that’s indeed the case.

@StokeySye This is the earlier reference to “Stokey” I’m aware of. As it’s informal, I expect it to have only survived in letters and postcards for example, though perhaps people back in the day wrote those with a certain sense of formality and avoided abbreviations. https://t.co/U4KRRiBrHi

I’m told the Bird Cage looks like it's close to reopening as a pizza pub very soon. Before the pizza backlash starts, remember it’s better than having a pub closed. The Turnpike House pub further up the road in Tottenham closed and is being converted to a local ambulance station

@doorstepbeauty @jackstevensbass @hackneycouncil @MayorofLondon Some of the landlords may likely live in a different city or even country. No emotional connection to the area whatsoever. What’s the incentive for them to invest in renovation? What’s the incentive even for the ones that are more local?

@GE0RGYGIRL Sounds good! I think “Meet you in the parklet” is going to be the slogan for the upcoming public realm improvements in and around Church St! :)
Fri 01 Jul 2022 · 08:07Reply
@GE0RGYGIRL Why is pavement width relevant? The parklet is on the road the same width as a parking bay.
Fri 01 Jul 2022 · 08:00Reply
@GE0RGYGIRL Also, if a parklet does become an anti-social hotspot and a nightmare for residents I’d like to think the council can simply remove it.
Fri 01 Jul 2022 · 07:58Reply
@GE0RGYGIRL When I think about public seating in a street I think about an elderly person who needs a rest, someone who isn’t feeling well, a parent with a small child that needs feeding etc. when saying “off you go to the park” simply isn’t going to cut it. Plenty of other scenarios.
Fri 01 Jul 2022 · 07:56Reply
@GE0RGYGIRL I rather have seating space there rather than a cycle hire stand that’s always empty and a little sports car that’s covered and hasn’t moved from that spot in over a year.
Fri 01 Jul 2022 · 07:46Reply
@GE0RGYGIRL This is the little parklet in Princess May Road. I’ve never actually seen it being used. If anything, one could argue it takes up a parking bag and is always empty and very quiet!! :) https://t.co/5lrXAdZOGd
Fri 01 Jul 2022 · 07:45Reply
@GE0RGYGIRL I’d love to! :) will be good to catch up. Would you feel the same way if it was just a bench somewhere in Woodlea Road for example? If there was space on the pavement for one? If so, so no benches in the public realm? Just in parks?
Fri 01 Jul 2022 · 07:40Reply
@GE0RGYGIRL There’s consultation till July 8th. Do people “hang around” in peaceful residential streets? I doubt it personally. I cannot see Brodia Rd or Lancell St becoming party central because of a parklet :) mostly people having coffee, a quick chat, the odd Deliveroo guy perhaps.
Fri 01 Jul 2022 · 07:36Reply
@GE0RGYGIRL I think the vast majority of people using a parklet will do so quietly and respectfully, given they are in a residential street. I also think the fact they are in residential streets will actually put some people off from using them, as they may appear ‘private’ for residents
Fri 01 Jul 2022 · 07:15Reply
@GE0RGYGIRL Why not also consider scenarios like neighbours “hanging around” in the parklets? :) I find it odd some people just look at the worst case scenario rather than also consider all the positive ones. The idea is making street more ‘people friendly’, not just sending them to the park
Fri 01 Jul 2022 · 07:11Reply
@GE0RGYGIRL The point is the road is public space after all and someone’s private home doesn’t extend beyond their front gate. Would a bench on the street to drink a coffee, read a book and have a sandwich for example been ok if there was space for it? “Hanging around” sounds anti-social.
