@VincentStops @stokeywheels Is that case with any of the other streets listed please? Church St is the only one listed twice so probably not, in which case the question is why does Church St has two and shouldn’t they be aggregated to provide road-level figure?
Fri 30 Sep 2022 · 11:48Reply
@GrumpyHatchling @MamaMoose_Be I think I actually agree with you. I’m simply pessimistic about the prospect of a dockless hire service working without it ending up cluttering pavements and creating obstacles for pedestrians. Dedicated parking bays don’t even make sense on paper, let alone in practice.
Fri 30 Sep 2022 · 11:38Reply
@GrumpyHatchling @MamaMoose_Be My view is the convenience and safety of riding all the way to your destination, especially at night, will always win. Last I heard, the council’s bike hire stands aren’t even on the Lime app. Their contract with Hackney Council is that bikes MUST be parked in the bays only.
Fri 30 Sep 2022 · 11:22Reply
@GrumpyHatchling @MamaMoose_Be If there were more regular bike stands everywhere and people parked their hire bike there rather than literally dump them in the middle of the pavement I think it could work fine. Too many people are too selfish and inconsiderate unfortunately-> “Someone will pick it up in a min” https://t.co/YkKe9e9v5N

@metecoban92 any ETA you can share please when the Stoke Newington LTN monitoring data report will be published? Thanks.
Fri 30 Sep 2022 · 11:12Reply
@GrumpyHatchling @MamaMoose_Be When the scheme is a DOCKLESS bike hire, as a customer you expect it to be just that i.e. Pick anywhere - Leave anywhere. With Santander bikes you know you sign up to a service that requires you pick and leave at specific locations. Very different proposition.
Fri 30 Sep 2022 · 10:59Reply
@GrumpyHatchling @MamaMoose_Be There are large gaps between stands and you can’t have one in each street obviously. Even if you did, people pick up a bike to ride to a destination, not to ride to a parking stand and then walk for 10-15min to where they need to get to so the whole concept in flawed.
Fri 30 Sep 2022 · 10:53Reply
@GrumpyHatchling @MamaMoose_Be There are 14 cycle hire stands in Stoke Newington and I rarely see Lime bikes parked there. They are often empty or have private bikes parked there. If there weren’t so many Limes dumped on pavements everywhere you could argue the stands are empty because the bikes are being used

@goresucks @russskellon It would appear there's sufficient demand for those bagels to justify an entire new bagel deli! :) Where's Papo’s Bagels?
Thu 29 Sep 2022 · 23:00Reply
Thu 29 Sep 2022 · 22:00Reply
@russskellon Well, it’s an upmarket bagel shop in a fashionable street. Add to that rising costs, rates etc. and it’s quite obvious why the prices aren’t those of the 24hr bagel shop on the High St. Very different menu, with possibly more expensive, better quality ingredients in some cases.

Thu 29 Sep 2022 · 21:36Reply
@stokeywheels @VincentStops In that case, shouldn’t the figure in the chart be an aggregate to show the overall increase or decrease for the entire street?

@TheGunnersPub Do you think that wider pavements in Church St, where daytime traffic is limited, will have an negative impact on emergency services response time? Church St is a quiet road now, especially during the day so I don’t see that’s the problem personally.
Wed 21 Sep 2022 · 17:59Reply
@TheGunnersPub How does widening a pavement by 1 metre make any difference to how anyone navigates the streets? :) it’s the same street only with a slightly wider pavement so there more room for pedestrians and in some cases outdoor seating and trees. Where’s the problem exactly?
Wed 21 Sep 2022 · 17:47Reply
@TheGunnersPub Why not? Church Street is 2-way as it always has been. How’s widening the pavement by 1 metre impact your ability to get to work with ease? I don’t follow your logic here. Also, where do the elderly fit in all this? I think most would appreciate more space on the pavement.
Wed 21 Sep 2022 · 17:41Reply
@TheGunnersPub How’s pavement widening NOT for the elderly or the ‘working class’ exactly? :) do they prefer narrow pavements for some reason?

Repainted shopfronts and new signage in Stoke Newington Church Street. 5 new businesses opened in the street in recent weeks. @LynRennick I agree the location opposite the existing public space in Yoakley Road seems odd, and suspect it was chosen because it’s not outside residential properties as some residents objected to having a parklet outside their house. Just guessing here.
Mon 12 Sep 2022 · 10:29Reply
@LynRennick Every public seating anywhere, like benches in a park can be misused, it doesn’t mean we shouldn’t have them for many people to benefit and enjoy respectfully. My view is that for every anti-social person who may sit there, hundreds of people like the elderly will enjoy quietly.
Mon 12 Sep 2022 · 10:20Reply
@LynRennick What can be so awful about free public seating Lyn? The contractor who installed them told me: “In my country, Romania, people would not believe if they were given a nice place to sit like this for free. Here in England, some people complain about it!“ :)

@Hackneycyclist @StokeyLTN Wordsworth Rd/Matthias Rd has bollards. The issue is slightly further up at Bennett Rd/Wordsworth Rd where vehicles travelling eastbound can bypass the one in the photo by accessing Wordsworth Rd via Bennett Rd https://t.co/JKS6PfcFJI

@Hackneycyclist @StokeyLTN There used to be a rubber bollard in Bennet Rd/Wordsworth Rd but too many drivers realised then can drive over it. It’s a shortcut when driving eastbound from Matthias Road to Stoke Newington Road. Wordsworth Rd is very popular with cyclists of all ages.
Tue 06 Sep 2022 · 13:22Reply
@Hackneycyclist My understanding is that in Stoke Newington the emergency services objected to bollards. @StokeyLTN may be able to provide more details. @Jono_Kenyon Fair enough. I must admit I hadn’t come across that yet and do wonder how widespread that attitude is amongst locals given the original claim that “indie shopkeepers in SN were too frightened to be public about their opposition to LTNs for fear of local luvvie boycotts”
Mon 05 Sep 2022 · 21:38Reply
@Jono_Kenyon @ElizMackie @_this_happens An off-licence in Church St told me less drivers stop and pop in for a few bits. A local cafe said fewer drivers, mainly taxi drivers, stop and pop in to grab coffee. Point being is that some businesses like those, aren’t happy about LTNs, even if the impact isn’t catastrophic.
Mon 05 Sep 2022 · 21:25Reply
@old_school_alps @Jono_Kenyon @ElizMackie @_this_happens I agree. Whether the opposition is rooted in legitimate reasons or not, there’s clearly anxiety there, especially post-COVID, post-Brexit and now the energy crisis. In that context, anything that is perceived as potentially impacting trade negatively is considered a threat.
Mon 05 Sep 2022 · 21:21Reply
@old_school_alps @Jono_Kenyon @ElizMackie @_this_happens What ‘alternative’ would you offer Premier Cars and Defoe Tyers though? Of the 116 businesses in Church St I think only a few depend heavily on cars. I could be wrong. Also, EarlyBird card shop claim to have been impacted negatively by the Bus Gate. So there are other examples
Mon 05 Sep 2022 · 21:14Reply
@old_school_alps @Jono_Kenyon @ElizMackie @_this_happens I spoke to someone there a while ago about the same thing and the person I spoke with explained that some jobs require more tools and equipment that could fit in a cargo bike. Also expressed concern about cycling in the rain.
Mon 05 Sep 2022 · 21:12Reply
@Jono_Kenyon @ElizMackie @_this_happens There are studies that show retailers tend to hugely overestimate how many of their customers arrive by car, and in those cases their opposition to LTN may not be justified if they fear losing a lot of trade as a result, but other businesses do depend on vehicle traffic.
Mon 05 Sep 2022 · 21:09Reply
@Jono_Kenyon @ElizMackie @_this_happens How does that work for a local garage or a mini-cab for example? It’s one thing telling the locksmith to hop on a cargo bike for certain jobs, but there are a few businesses like the two I mentioned that don’t have similar options. What would you suggest they do?

I spoke to a number of businesses in Church St in the last year since the bus gate was installed and asked them how they felt about the LTNs. Those that weren’t keen weren’t “afraid” to share with me their view in case I may boycott them if I held an opposing view to theirs.
Mon 05 Sep 2022 · 19:25Reply
@Gemma_Champ Nasty and aggressive attitude is one thing. Expressing opposition to a council policy is another. I totally agree. I had no issue with the content per se, but the tone was very aggressive and involved personal attacks. You can disagree with someone and still be respectful.

@danbamb @VincentStops @limebike Again, that’s not the point :) just because they are good and offer a valuable and convenient option for people to cycle doesn’t mean the price being paid in the form of blocked pavements is justified. You might be ok paying that price, others, including the council, aren’t.
Sat 03 Sep 2022 · 20:31Reply
@danbamb @VincentStops @limebike That’s not the point though. Lime is far more likely to be dumped in the middle of the pavement like this one, than be parked to at a bike stand. You won’t see this with a non-hire bike, that’ll be locked to a stand. Regardless, Lime have an agreement with Hackney Council. https://t.co/PSDm3gUCUJ

@derrenweekes They won’t. They wouldn’t want to piss of their customers by making them realise that in Hackney, the dockless bike service they signed up for isn’t actually dockless: Parking bay = docking bay. The council sprinkled 70 parking bays that no one uses.
Sat 03 Sep 2022 · 09:40Reply
@derrenweekes These cycle hire bays are often empty because as the Lime app will show you, people park at their destination, because that flexibility is the reason they signed up. Only 14 parking bays in Stoke Newington with many bikes dumped all over the place. Not surprising. https://t.co/zwd3CId8nU
Sat 03 Sep 2022 · 09:38Reply
@derrenweekes Fundamentally, even if everyone knew it was a requirement it would make very little difference because it’s hardly being enforced and people will always prioritise their own personal comfort and ability to ride up to their destination, rather than a bay and then walk.
Sat 03 Sep 2022 · 09:37Reply
@derrenweekes I highly doubt Lime customised any part of its app to cater to a particular borough. As far as I’m aware the parking bays aren’t on the map in the app, so they are practically invisible, plus, Limers are often unaware in my experience of the requirement in Hackney to park in bays

@alastairis I’m certain people would think twice before paying for a cycle hire ride if they knew they had to park in a few parking bays that are scattered across the borough. Lime pays a bit of lip service to “park in a council bay please” but in reality, the bikes are parked everywhere.
Fri 02 Sep 2022 · 18:35Reply
@alastairis Lime actually limit the number of bikes you can report within a 24 hour window. Not surprising. There are 70 cycle hire bays in Hackney, 14 of which are in Stoke Newington. You cannot have on in every street corner, and people want the flexibility to park anywhere. https://t.co/cgnFXpm2bQ
Fri 02 Sep 2022 · 18:05Reply
@GrumpyHatchling The council’s cycle hire parking bays I see are almost always empty and I’m pretty sure it’s not because everyone happen to cycle at that moment. Not surprising at all. You actually see people parking a Lime 2 metres from a bay. Poor awareness + poor enforcement.
Fri 02 Sep 2022 · 18:03Reply
@GrumpyHatchling “Encouraged” :) the whole point of a dockless service is the freedom to park wherever you want, which almost is your destination. Wholly unrealistic to expect anyone who Limes to Stoke Newington to only park in one of these 14 cycle hire parking bays. https://t.co/rjJBMa49ak
Fri 02 Sep 2022 · 17:55Reply
@GrumpyHatchling Agree. I’m all for active travel and micro-mobility but if the price we have to pay is mobile, temporary street furniture then the council should be honest about it and not pretend that users of a dockless service will park in a few dedicated cycle hire parking bays. Disingenuous
Fri 02 Sep 2022 · 17:20Reply
@thenewlove It’s been discussed here often. Geofencing is applied to parks and other specific locations. At the end of the day, it’s a dockless bike and a parking bay = docking bay so the whole thing makes no sense. People sign up for the flexibility and freedom to park anywhere.
Fri 02 Sep 2022 · 17:18Reply
@thenewlove @metecoban92 I don’t know what the contract between the council and Lime looks like but would hope that there’s a periodic review to assess how each side is or isn’t meeting its obligations. Lime take a very soft approach from what’s I’ve seen, which isn’t surprising.
Fri 02 Sep 2022 · 17:10Reply
@thenewlove It’s not difficult at all to compare the map of the council’s cycle hire parking bays and where Lime bikes are ACTUALLY parked at any given point in time to see that in reality they are scattered all over the place, with very few in the dedicated parking bays if any at all. https://t.co/7KFIRbMgIu
Fri 02 Sep 2022 · 17:08Reply
@thenewlove What council enforcement do you expect here? As far the council expect it’s down to Lime to ensure bikes are parked in the council’s 70 cycle hire bays. @metecoban92 and council officers are monitoring this and hopefully something will be done eventually.
Fri 02 Sep 2022 · 16:59Reply
@thenewlove It’s not up to the council though. Lime was granted the contract as I understand on condition that bikes will only be parked in the 70 cycle hire parking bays the council installed. That’s clearly not happening, for various reasons. Lime is a good photo opp for the council.
