@jackstevensbass I agree to an extent, as it’s quite mixed in terms of shops, especially the east side opposite the new jewellery shop. My point was it’s not a back alleyway and the footfall towards to the ice cream shop on the corner alone makes a difference in the summer ;)

The trial ends on March 2023 when the scheme will either be altered, kept or abandoned

@ETWriteHome @SimonZev It’s still considerably less than the endless stream of through traffic pre-Bus Gate. The monitoring data makes that very clear. The Bus Gate is only a year old, and over time I suspect less and less drivers who aren’t allowed to drive through it, will.

Church St has 112 businesses, many shops and restaurants, and isn’t a main ‘A Road’ like the High St, so it was decided to limit daytime traffic there, in part to make it a more attractive shopping and dining street during the day.

@ETWriteHome @SimonZev So all or nothing? :) I think a compromise is a valid third option to have at least some benefits rather than none whatsoever. The Bus Gate, like other LTN filters, is designed to also deter people from making short car journeys, by making driving through Hackney inconvenient.

Maybe the Bus Gate will become 24/7 one day, but 7am-7pm is again in my opinion better than nothing. At least brunch and lunch outdoor diners benefit from it ;) and many other people.

@ETWriteHome @SimonZev Well, given it’s used by three bus routes I doubt full, permanent pedestrianisation will ever be practical, so reducing daytime traffic, widening the pavements and creating continuous pavements at junctions is the next best option so I’d take it over doing nothing at all.

@CKE1977 Of course not. When is there ever a consensus about anything in life? :) Every 4 years residents elect local councillors and a mayor to pursue an agenda they put in front of voters. Not everyone in the borough is going to be onboard with it and like it but that’s how it works.

@CKE1977 Well, there are people who also live here and see many benefits of the Bus Gate. Some love it, some hate it. In March 2023 it’ll be decided if it’ll be kept or not following the 18-months trial. Given 70% of eligible roads in Hackney are in LTNs, I expect it’ll be kept.

Hackney and Lime agreed that Lime bikes can only be parked in the few cycle hire stands the council installed, though in reality and for various reasons you’ll rarely see a Lime bike parked there.

No surprise no. 183 is reopening soon after it closed. It’s rare for a commercial site in Church St to remain empty for long. @sallysunflower Roads changes and certain restrictions are sometimes introduced over time. There’s nothing new about that. Some roads become one-way, no entry and so on. It doesn’t happen often but it does happen nonetheless.

@stokeywheels My take on it is that in a huge city of 9 million people, getting to residential areas, even inner-city ones like neighbourhoods in Hackney will always take a while if you don’t live next door to them. Even if there’s a Tube nearby, it often involves a bus journey.

@iambrianjones @Microlambert I think that’s pushing it :) 15min walk to Clissold Park and the closest useful bus stop is the 106 in Blackstock Rd 8min away. You might as well continue to Finsbury Park to get the 106 outside or Manor House and get the 141, 341 outside down Green Lanes to Clissold Park.

@Microlambert Dalston Kingsland and Dalston Junction Overground stations also very handy given frequency of 149, 76, 243 and 67 buses. The reality is that for some, it all comes down to a Tube station, and there isn’t one in Church St. Fire Station would have been a good location though ;)
