@StokeySye I thought the proposed southbound bus lane in the High St will be a normal bus lane, which cyclists could use rather than it being a cycle lane with floating bus stops. In the plan it’s marked as “Bus and cycle lane”

@IanPethick Interestingly, one of the options for the High St outlined in the 2014 feasibility study is a Bus Gate with time restrictions and exemptions, mainly for deliveries I’d imagine. Could work if Evering, Manse, Rectory and Brooke Rds are 2-way to bypass the Bus Gate.

If you need to get to east of the Church St Bus Gate then you need to go to Manor Rd, down the A10, Rectory Rd then Brooke Rd and up the High St. How many people do that though?

@GE0RGYGIRL There are a few businesses that either rely on people driving to them (e.g. Defoe Tyers) or rely on a vehicle at the moment to go to customers (e.g. Locksmith). Of the 112 businesses in Church St though, that's the small minority I'd argue.

@GE0RGYGIRL Sure. It may be, though the extent I'd think if often very difficult to measure, and because it's such a visible, tangible thing in the road it's easy to fixate one it and for some it's an action by a council they don't like/trust, which adds to the hostility.

@GE0RGYGIRL I think that point is important because I’d think it would be impossible, and rather irresponsible from a body that represents local businesses to make a link and imply causality between any decrease in trade and one single cause.

@GE0RGYGIRL Some shops are anti-LTN but in a post-COVID, post-Brexit, cost-of-living crisis how can you attribute any decrease in trade to one thing, like a Bus Gate? Studies found that shop owners consistently overestimate the number of shoppers that arrive by car. newsroom.co.nz/ideasroom/park…

@Les_pot Yes. The local business who has the keys as I understand it is simply the ‘Parklet Keeper’ responsible for locking/unlocking because some residents raised concerns of possible ASB at night. It’s very much public seating for all to use and enjoy.
