@StokeySye Three options were presented in the consultation in 2014 but I don’t have them. In the 2018 TfL two bus northbound bus stops (Police Station and Brooke Rd) are removed where there’s a new cycle lane but a new one is installed between them, so possibly a ‘floating’ one. https://t.co/ameaWVQflk

@StokeySye I thought the proposed southbound bus lane in the High St will be a normal bus lane, which cyclists could use rather than it being a cycle lane with floating bus stops. In the plan it’s marked as “Bus and cycle lane”

@Stokebrewington Really worth reading the range of options in the 2014 report. One option is a Bus Gate with time restriction and exemptions for example. TfL’s 2018 plan only had southbound bus lane with Brooke, Rectory, Evering and Manse Roads becoming 2-way. (@Paulbowker7) https://t.co/6pt52jfj5N

It’s a dockless service, yet people are expected to park in a bay, which is effectively a docking station https://t.co/EsnzwJA6Et

@HighburyPenguin @carvalhoCAP The concept is entirely flawed in my view because the whole appeal of a bike hire is the flexibility to cycle to your destination, especially at night or when it rains. Who’s going to cycle to a parking bay and walk for 10min to where they need to get to?? It makes no sense.
Sat 26 Nov 2022 · 09:40Reply
@HighburyPenguin @carvalhoCAP There are 14 cycle hire parking bays in Stoke Newington the council installed specifically for Lime bikes, which aren’t allowed to be left anywhere else based on the agreement between the council and Lime as far as I’m aware. @GE0RGYGIRL The ultimate vision is that by making Hackney's roads safer for cyclists and quicker for public transport because of gradual reduction of car usage (for short journeys mainly) getting to Church St from across the borough to shop and dine will become far more attractive.
Thu 24 Nov 2022 · 21:31Reply
@GE0RGYGIRL By the way, Wilmer Place carpark next to Wholefoods is always pretty full as it has always been, so clearly people that need to drive here are still very much able to and aren't put off by the lengthier journey if they come from the west between 7am-7pm.
Thu 24 Nov 2022 · 21:27Reply
@GE0RGYGIRL possibly, though the idea is to offset any of that by making the street more attractive for people to cycle to and walk along, thus making it more vibrant with local businesses benefiting as a result, albeit not 100% of them when you consider Defoe Tyers as one example.
Thu 24 Nov 2022 · 21:02Reply
@GE0RGYGIRL The examples of trade from through traffic in Church St I heard from local businesses were limited to drivers popping into a off-licence to get cigarettes or a cafe for cup of coffee, often while parking in the road. What % of the trade did those scenarios represent?
Thu 24 Nov 2022 · 20:58Reply
@GE0RGYGIRL There are a few businesses that either rely on people driving to them (e.g. Defoe Tyers) or rely on a vehicle at the moment to go to customers (e.g. Locksmith). Of the 112 businesses in Church St though, that's the small minority I'd argue.
Thu 24 Nov 2022 · 20:57Reply
@GE0RGYGIRL Sure. It may be, though the extent I'd think if often very difficult to measure, and because it's such a visible, tangible thing in the road it's easy to fixate one it and for some it's an action by a council they don't like/trust, which adds to the hostility.
Thu 24 Nov 2022 · 20:27Reply
@GE0RGYGIRL I think that point is important because I’d think it would be impossible, and rather irresponsible from a body that represents local businesses to make a link and imply causality between any decrease in trade and one single cause.
Thu 24 Nov 2022 · 20:24Reply
@GE0RGYGIRL Some shops are anti-LTN but in a post-COVID, post-Brexit, cost-of-living crisis how can you attribute any decrease in trade to one thing, like a Bus Gate? Studies found that shop owners consistently overestimate the number of shoppers that arrive by car. newsroom.co.nz/ideasroom/park…
Thu 24 Nov 2022 · 19:27Reply
@GE0RGYGIRL Perhaps given how polarising the issue is, and the fact the SNBA represents a range of local business owners who have different views about LTNs the chairs of the SNBA didn’t feel it would be appropriate or practical to provide a brief comment. I’m only speculating here.

@GE0RGYGIRL @LynRennick Most of Hackney is within LTNs with new ones about to be announced I believe (not in Stoke Newington). The borough is changing and if cab companies wish to survive they’ll need to reconsider their “not going to LTN sorry” policy. Soon they’ll have no one left to pick up.

@GE0RGYGIRL @LynRennick All the streets in Stoke Newington south of Church Street are in low traffic neighbourhoods now. If a mini cab company refused to pick up/drop off from practically half of Stoke Newington I’d say name and shame.

@GE0RGYGIRL @LynRennick De Beauvoir and Brownswood Park (the area between Seven Sisters Rd and Brownswood Rd) have been low traffic neighbourhoods since the 80s. I’d be very surprised if cabs have not been picking up and dropping off people there since those early LTN were established.
Mon 21 Nov 2022 · 07:51Reply
@GE0RGYGIRL @LynRennick Worth pointing out that 70% of eligible roads in Hackney are now in low traffic neighbourhoods so it’s unlikely black cabs and minicabs now don’t go to most of the borough streets. Perhaps a few grumpy ones may have an issue but it’s now the new normal in Hackney.

@carvalhoCAP @mayorofhackney @metecoban92 It would be a good start if Lime actually marked the council’s parking bays in its app. They probably cannot have borough-specific information displayed in its app and count on people knowing or spotting a cycle hire parking bay. @LynRennick How come? no road is 'closed', there's always access to every address, but the journey to it may be longer depending where your drive from. Do cabs refuse to pick people up from specific addresses? don't they factor the potentially longer journey into the fare?

@old_school_alps @mayorofhackney @metecoban92 I actually think that the stolen ones are less likely to be dumped somewhere, and are more likely to be kept away somewhere for the next day. I don’t imagine it’s a one day joyride.

@old_school_alps @mayorofhackney @metecoban92 It actually wouldn’t be a problem if so many Lime users weren’t so inconsiderate and dump bikes in the middle of the pavement. Most could easily have been parked in a way that doesn’t create such an obstruction. This attitude is mind-boggling. https://t.co/7wsFmgjbQl

@old_school_alps @mayorofhackney @metecoban92 As I wrote here many times, the convenience and safety considerations of cycling to your destination will always win. There are only 14 bays in Stoke Newington. Cannot imagine anyone cycle to a random bay to them walk to their destination, especially at night or when it rains. https://t.co/iryQJQtUSs

@old_school_alps @mayorofhackney @metecoban92 That’s the model Human Forest have. They picked random spots like the street corner outside the Clissold Park Tavern, which they decide are parking bays and if you don’t park there you pay £1.50. Hackney put cycle hire parking bays but Limes are dumped everywhere. No surprise.

@JamesBurdass The population of Hackney is 280,000. 2,000 (some of which don’t live in the borough) is 0.7% :) What’s your point with that figure exactly? It’s a tiny number by any measure. Not surprisingly, anti-LTN demonstrations attract only a few dozen people from what I could gather.

@JamesBurdass The fact there are so many bikes in Church St that they are outnumber the reduced daytime traffic can be considered an achievement, which I suspect is the point the council was making. Again, I agree it’s a point that would appear to state a point many consider to be obvious.

@JamesBurdass If you stated that “Church St is closed to cars 7am-7pm BEYOND THE BUS GATE” you would have been correct, but that wasn’t the claim you made :) you made it sound as if Church St is completely car-free between 7am-7pm, which isn’t true. That’s all.

@JamesBurdass I can agree the point that bikes outnumber cars in a road where there’s daytime restriction on through traffic is stating the obvious, to some extent, while also point out that you falsely claim the road is closed to cars 7am-7pm when in reality it’s not closed to cars.
Fri 18 Nov 2022 · 18:33Reply
@JamesBurdass It’s not though, right? You can get to every address in Stoke Newington Church St by car 24/7, but depending where you are coming from the journey may be longer if you need to go around the Bus Gate. You don’t seem to know the scheme you are commenting on and how it works.
Fri 18 Nov 2022 · 18:31Reply
@JamesBurdass You don’t appear to be familiar with Stoke Newington Church St and where the Bus Gate actually is. The Bus Gate is half way up the road, meaning cars can drive all the way up to the Bus Gate but cannot go beyond it between 7am-7pm i.e. through traffic. https://t.co/jzj8oqbZYG
Fri 18 Nov 2022 · 18:23Reply
@JamesBurdass I tend to agree but it’s not a reason to falsely claim the street is closed to cars between 7am-7pm, or perhaps you’re not very familiar with the details of the traffic calming measure you are commenting on.
Fri 18 Nov 2022 · 18:07Reply
@JamesBurdass News flash: Stoke Newington Church St isn’t closed to cars. Between 7am-7pm THROUGH TRAFFIC is restricted to buses and local Blue Badge holders. There are cars throughout the day on both sides of the Bus Gate, hence why the number of cars using the road fell by 60%, not 100%.

Thu 17 Nov 2022 · 09:55Reply
@JamesDAustin The 70% is really key in my opinion to dispel the myth some people insist on propagating as if LTNs are middle-class enclaves when in fact, Hackney streets, like many London streets are very mixed, and the reality is that most now are within LTNs.
Thu 17 Nov 2022 · 09:47Reply
@JamesDAustin 70% of eligible roads in Hackney are within low-traffic neighbourhoods and I’m not aware of any LTN scheme that wasn’t made permanent following a trial period, so if historical trend is anything to go by, it’s very likely the filters in SN will be made permanent in a few months.
Thu 17 Nov 2022 · 09:26Reply
@JamesDAustin I suppose it depends on the overall criteria that’ll be used to make that decision, but from the monitoring data that was published it’s clear in my view that the increase in traffic in the ‘boundary roads’ is way below what some people feared or claimed was happening.

@clissoldpeople The ones in Nevill Road and Lancell St are always unlocked and haven’t heard that they’ve become party-central at night. I’d think they could all be unlocked and only locked at night if ASB becomes a constant issue. Even then, I’d think there are other options to tackle that.

2 months after they were installed, the new parklets in Yoakley Rd and Bouverie Rd are still locked till a local business is found to be a ‘Parklet Keeper’ responsible for locking them every day following concerns by some residents of ASB there at night. https://t.co/nabtqtGbPV

The Blended Crossing includes pavement space before the road, rather than filling the gap, because it’s designed to create continuous pavement to give priority to pedestrians. The Blended Crossing is legally a footway over which drivers are guests according to @RantyHighwayman. x.com/StokeyUpdates/…

@janeybt @AbneyParkN16 That’s what I’m curious about. 6 months instead of the 4 months that was originally planned for the work is significant. There could many reasons, such as unexpected shortage of workers midway or change in priorities across the overall restoration project in the cemetery.

@Stokebrewington @Gemma_Champ 70% of eligible roads in Hackney are in LTNs (highest % in London) with a few new ones about to be announced soon I believe, though not in Stoke Newington. I’m not aware of any LTN in Hackney that didn’t pass the trial period. I wonder if any will ever appear north of Manor Rd.

@janeybt @AbneyParkN16 What’s ‘much work’ in this context? This was in early July. Because it’s a cemetery, an archeologist needs to be involved, especially in the early stages of digging which likely slows things down but is necessary. x.com/StokeyUpdates/…
