@ibikebrighton @thenewlove @ldner I’m talking about nurses, teachers and artists for example I met over the years that could only afford to get a house in places like Stoke Newington in the 70s and much prefer it now. They live in tidier streets without empty shops and derelict buildings than when they came here
Sun 11 Dec 2022 · 20:51Reply
@ibikebrighton @thenewlove @ldner Of course. My point was that, in my experience, people who could only afford to buy here when it was a somewhat rundown, cheap and undesirable area, welcome the changes and improvements because they now live in a nicer, cleaner and safer area. Their property is also worth a lot.

@ldner @psimonk There was considerable post-war and post-industrial dereliction in the area, as I’m sure you know, to make Stoke Newington an area many people wouldn’t consider moving into unless they were looking for a relatively cheap house or were looking for a place to squat. https://t.co/5QDc0chacu

@psimonk @ldner Which scheme? LTN? My original point was the vast majority of long-term residents I ask if they prefer SN now or when they moved here in the 70s-80s almost always say it’s now a much nicer and better area. They often say they only moved here because as a rundown area it was cheap https://t.co/JV8tUuKUzK
Sat 10 Dec 2022 · 22:52Reply
@ldner I’m not playing down the fact that when an area becomes more desirable and property prices go up, some people find themselves priced out. Not claiming that an improved area is all positives, as there also negatives as you point out. Some long-term residents prefer SN now.
Sat 10 Dec 2022 · 22:48Reply
@ldner Not at all. Just pointing out that homeowners that bought when the area was less desirable are likely happy to see that it has improved over the years. Not just a matter of property value, but also living in a nicer area than it was then when they came to the area.

@slocrock Again, my original point was that people that moved to the area 40-50 years ago, and were likely only able to afford buying in Stoke Newington, appreciate the area improving, more than people who prefer if it didn’t change. Just my impression from talking to long-term residents.
Sat 10 Dec 2022 · 17:08Reply
@slocrock Indeed. If you’re renting then an area improving and becoming more desirable signals unavoidable rent hike as the landlords aim to maximise return but if you bought when it was cheap and still live here, you likely appreciate the area becoming better to live in and in demand.

@slocrock My point is that people that moved to the area when it was cheap and rundown, and are still here, are generally in my experience pleased the area, as well as the value of their property, has improved considerably. Some have cashed in, and some that sold years ago, now regret it.
Sat 10 Dec 2022 · 15:23Reply
@ldner What about the impact of gentrification that caused houses that were bought on the cheap in the 70s and 80s to be worth close to £2,000,000 today in some cases? :) I bet the homeowners are very pleased the cheap house they bought all those years ago is worth a lot today.
Sat 10 Dec 2022 · 15:20Reply
@ldner You’re missing the point. I’m referring to people that moved here in the 70s and 80s and are very pleased with how the area has improved compared to the rundown state it was in when they moved here. I’m not claiming everyone share that sentiment. Do you prefer SN 40 years ago?
Sat 10 Dec 2022 · 13:50Original
Over the years I’ve heard more people saying Stoke Newington is now much nicer, cleaner and safer place to live in than when they first moved to area years ago, than people who genuinely wish Stoke Newington remained as it was in the 70s and 80s.

@charlie_couve @limebike @hackneycouncil @mayorofhackney @metecoban92 My impression is the bikes are very popular and provide clear benefits, so it’s easy for the council to downplay the negative aspect, which is number of bikes being dumped in the middle of pavements. They are great for active travel, unless you are a pedestrian ;)
Fri 09 Dec 2022 · 17:42Reply
@charlie_couve @limebike @hackneycouncil @mayorofhackney @metecoban92 In fact, as far as I’m aware, the agreement between Lime and the council is the bikes have to be parked in cycle hire bays, which the council installed across the borough like these in SN. It’s a dockless service, so not difficult to understand why those bays are often empty https://t.co/mMoX689vqr

@JamesBurdass @metecoban92 @ABD_GtrLondon Limiting access to buses and local blue badge holders is a restriction, not closure. Road closure = no one can get through. But it appears to be subjective. Bottom line is, every address in the street is accessible by car 24/7 so it’s not “closed” as someone people claim.

Wed 07 Dec 2022 · 09:52Reply
@metecoban92 @JamesBurdass @ABD_GtrLondon Sorry, I don’t get it. So because there time restriction is stated in other signs then a sign that describe the restriction can be worded in a way that suggests the restriction is 24hr when in fact it’s only 7am-7pm? I don’t understand the logic in that at all. Oh well.
Wed 07 Dec 2022 · 09:44Reply
@metecoban92 @JamesBurdass @ABD_GtrLondon Wrong in my opinion. The “no through route” restriction is only 7am-7pm so should be stated surely. Saying there’s no access to A10 from Albion Rd via Church St should also state that’s the case 7am-7pm, as you can get to the A10 from Albion Rd via Church St from 7:01pm-6:59am.
Wed 07 Dec 2022 · 09:42Reply
@metecoban92 @JamesBurdass @ABD_GtrLondon I don’t understand why there are so many versions of a road sign that should simply state ‘Church St “No Through Traffic” 7am-7pm’ :)
Wed 07 Dec 2022 · 09:40Reply
@metecoban92 @JamesBurdass @ABD_GtrLondon Will do. Some signs still state incorrectly that the road is closed, rather than specify “no through traffic”. Happy to share photos but I’d really hope people who are responsible for the signage know what’s been put up and what needs fixing like these ones in Albion Road. https://t.co/xFEFJ5jXCe
Wed 07 Dec 2022 · 09:35Reply
@JamesBurdass @ABD_GtrLondon @metecoban92 By the way, it’s ok to dispute a road sign that states something that’s factually incorrect, you know that, right? People get signs wrong as is clearly the case. The council started fixing a few signs by replacing closed with “THROUGH TRAFFIC”. See?? https://t.co/rLAlh30SIm
Wed 07 Dec 2022 · 09:33Reply
@JamesBurdass @ABD_GtrLondon @metecoban92 Correct, you can’t drive from one to the other but falsely claiming the road is “CLOSED” sounds very much like you cannot enter it at all by car which completely incorrect as you can drive to every address 24/7 just fine. You just need to know if to enter from east or west.

@JamesBurdass @ABD_GtrLondon Church St Bus Gate signage by the council has been atrocious from day one. Incorrect and misleading. Mon 05 Dec 2022 · 08:55Reply
@Roger89835988 @TheWomensRoom The lengthy discussion here on that particular topic suggested, to me at least, that there isn’t a clear cut legal definition of the blended crossing everyone could agree on, hence different opinion which type of tactile paving should be used. Anything about other LTN aspects?
Mon 05 Dec 2022 · 08:53Reply
@Roger89835988 @TheWomensRoom Well, this whole conversation started from multiple hearsay from a “person who is responsible for the SN LTN”, whoever that individual is (or isn’t). I wouldn’t use that to summarise and assume how this entire project was carried out. Would you? :)
Mon 05 Dec 2022 · 08:39Reply
@TheWomensRoom @Roger89835988 Not really relevant to questions posed though. Traffic engineering/management is a profession with standards and procedures. If they weren’t followed, fully or partially, in SN that would be interesting. Doesn’t sound like the hearsay went to that level of detail.
Mon 05 Dec 2022 · 08:28Reply
@Roger89835988 @TheWomensRoom If true, out of interest, how relevant is visiting a site in this case when you have data, photographs, maps and Google Streetview to plan traffic restrictions? As in, would have it made any difference? If so, why?
Mon 05 Dec 2022 · 08:00Reply
@TheWomensRoom Is it standard practice for traffic engineers to visit locations they work on or do they sometimes, or possibly often, work from maps and plans? What do you think would have been the benefit of visiting the sites, a traffic engineer doesn’t get from maps?

@irishrichy It was a dark, cosy, small pub that was buzzing. The brand new furniture, the purple lounge chairs by the window and framed posters of Kurt Cobain and others, really make it feel in my view plasticky and trying to be Shoreditch or Hoxton. It was really unique before. Shame.

@irishrichy They removed the TV and screen, repainted it, got rid of the booths by the windows, changed all the furniture with brand new one, got rid of the popular Thai kitchen. I’ve been only a few times since it reopened and felt it lost its soul and essence. Trying to be a trendy pub.

It’s sad to see the Coach & Horses in the High St completely empty at the moment. I hoped things will pick up since it reopened in May under new ownership following refurbishment. Is it still usually fairly empty?

So it seems there’s a “Write a glowing review of a hipster restaurant in Stoke Newington that only serves dried food that has been rehydrated” challenge. I wouldn’t mind one actually if it meant either the garden centre site or Chinese restaurant in Church St was back in use! x.com/tompollak/stat…

@Pablodelmar Correction: Stoke Newington Church St isn’t closed to cars. There’s a daytime Bus Gate halfway up the road, restricting through traffic to buses and local blue badge holders. Any address is accessible by car 24/7, but between 7am-7pm you can’t drive across the length of the road.

@HowarthCharles @N16Rectory I think traffic modelling was carried out as part of a feasibility report in 2014 that looked into the various options to remove the gyratory. @Paulbowker7 may be able to shed some light.

@HowarthCharles True, though some residents in roads like Rectory Road that would like become 2-way are concerned that it while slowing traffic, it would also mean more of it and a result more pollution-> @N16Rectory
