@MichaelRacers @seanpaulday As was always the case (and no surprise) Church St is busier on weekends and especially when it’s a nice day. Church St was never like Portobello Road Market, in terms of footfall, but it does feel a bit like a tourist attraction on a nice, sunny weekend when it gets busy.
Mon 27 Feb 2023 · 07:59Reply
@MichaelRacers @seanpaulday You’re 100% right! It’s deserted from cars as daytime through traffic is restricted to buses and local Blue Badge holders. Plenty of pedestrians and cyclists though, especially during weekends. I live here. 112 of the 116 business in Church St are trading and it’s buzzing.

@Graham8digits @jonburkeUK There’s been a daytime Bus Gate in Stoke Newington Church St since Sep 2021, which has reduced the number of vehicles in the street by restricting through traffic. The street is quieter and nicer with every address still accessible by car 24/7.

@Graham8digits @jonburkeUK Possibly if there weren’t 3 bus routes (73, 476, 393), deliveries to various shops and only vehicle access to a number of streets (Summerhouse Rd, Fleetwood St, Lancel St mainly). The council has been looking into having a weekend market in some part of Church St though.

@guzey15 @TobyCrick Nando’s is one of 112 businesses in Church St and is an exception, in that the site was redeveloped with a large commercial unit in mind. Pizza Express tried to merge several shops opposite years ago, but the Conservation Area status of the street prevented that thankfully.

@guzey15 Interesting. What’s your source for that please if you can share? The brochure I saw for the site a few months ago was still advertising it as a single unit. Over the years it was rumoured M&S and then PureGym will move in.
Sun 12 Feb 2023 · 17:09Reply
@guzey15 @TobyCrick Some people would argue those “big shops” offer employment opportunities and help keep large commercial units occupied rather than empty so we don’t live in a ghost High St. it’s not all THAT bad.
Sun 12 Feb 2023 · 17:08Reply
@guzey15 The point that independent business is very unlikely to be able to afford a large unit in a High St still stands though. There are plenty of very diverse independent shops in the High St, but some people prefer to only see the few supermarket and coffee chains.
Sun 12 Feb 2023 · 17:06Reply
@Hayleywhite16g1 Of course they haven’t. Different clientele to a larger extent and representing part of the spectrum, as is the case with any shop. I doubt anyone gave up going to the Good Egg, Esters, Atlas Grinds, Yellow Warbler for example because Pret opened.
Sun 12 Feb 2023 · 17:02Reply
@TobyCrick @guzey15 I doubt any independent business could afford to open in a former bank branch purely given the size of the unit. HSBC, Halifax, Lloyds, Santander all closed in recent years. Interestingly, one is now a Pound Shop (Santander)! Does that count as independent??

@guzey15 There’s a fair amount of independent shops. Always have been. There were always chains in the High St, especially in large units (some were originally two shops), which only a chain can afford given the size. There was even M&S till the early 70s where SportsDirect is today! :)
Sun 12 Feb 2023 · 16:43Reply
@Hayleywhite16g1 On a positive note, I feel that for many locals who may not feel that a small, trendy independent cafe is the place for them (for various reasons) Pret offers a very inclusive space they can enjoy.
Sun 12 Feb 2023 · 16:27Reply
@Hayleywhite16g1 The address is 171-3 Stoke Newington High St ;) very much a High St more than Church St vibe in my view. Most of the shops in Church St are small and as it’s in a Conservation Area they cannot be merged (some were in the past), so not that attractive to big chains.
Sun 12 Feb 2023 · 16:07Original
It’s been 9 months since Pret opened in SN High St. Not everyone was happy about it, even though chains have been part of the High St for many decades alongside small, independent shops. It’s fairly busy as far I can tell and has diverse clientele. How do you feel about it now? https://t.co/jGaWvXnzPW
Sun 12 Feb 2023 · 15:57Reply
@Hayleywhite16g1 Who is “we”? Pret is always busy when I’m there and has a very diverse clientele. I think there’s a big demand for places like Pret and Costa, especially in the High St. I doubt they’ll take on a small site in Church St, but large ones in the High St make a lot of sense.

@Limmmao You can grab coffee and a snack in most eateries these days so perhaps the fixation and focus of some on “cafe” isn’t that relevant as isn’t more then a cultural reference.

@Limmmao What's the criteria in your opinion? any place you can get a coffee to drink inside? There are also bistros and delis like Camia and Stokey Deli that could be added to the list in that case. What about Acoustic Brasserie and The Blue Legume? I classify them as restaurants myself.

@jennyfmorgan @JamesBurdass @visitcamberwell @hackneycouncil @metecoban92 By the way, there were 14(!) confectioners in Church St in the 1910s! I bet a few people complained about that at some point. “Oh no, not another bloody sweet shop!!” ;)
Sun 12 Feb 2023 · 09:04Reply
It’ll probably surprise some people, but there have been fewer businesses closing in Church St in recent years during COVID and following the introduction of the nearby LTNs than in previous years. It’s very rare of a commercial property in Church St to remain empty for long.
Sun 12 Feb 2023 · 08:58Reply
@jennyfmorgan @JamesBurdass @visitcamberwell @hackneycouncil @metecoban92 112 businesses and only 7 are cafes ;) if someone only wants to see cafes and imagine there are actually 70 that’s what they’ll see and ignore everything else. Btw, there are 10 estate agents, which is a LOT but still less than 10% of the businesses in the street.
Sun 12 Feb 2023 · 08:55Reply
With approximately 50% of the businesses in Church Street changing every 10 years since the late 19th century, change in the commercial landscape of the street is constant and driven by many factors. The local LTNs have only been in place for only 18(!) months. That’s nothing.
Sun 12 Feb 2023 · 08:46Reply
Studies in different counties have shown that retailers tend to hugely overestimate the number of customers that get to their shop in a car. The anxiety about loss of trade in most cases, due to reduced car access is unfounded. Of course, there’ll always be a few exceptions. https://t.co/IKRnfJBWC8
Sun 12 Feb 2023 · 08:34Reply
It’s funny hearing anti-LTNer complaining about lack of diversity in Church St and shop closures as it was the increase in car ownership from the 1950s onwards and growing popularity of shopping centres that contributed to the decline in local shopping in the first place! :)
Sun 12 Feb 2023 · 08:31Reply
Dozens of corner shops and small shopping parades in Stoke Newington closed over the years (there used to be 50 shops in Allen Rd alone), which is why those complaining about “lack of diversity” in Church St should be careful what they wish for. It could be FAR worse.

@willpower_mc The way I’m reading it, and I could be wrong, is that if the roundabout is in the LTN then there’s no access to it from Newington Green Road in the south or Green Lanes in the north, so you can only circle it clockwise to get from Mildmay Park to Matthias Road. Odd.

@lucyannburke @oshea369 Why? If a car is the only viable option for a long journey then the journey may be longer as you have to bypass LTNs. Grant you it’s not ideal perhaps, but at least if people will make fewer short journeys by car in the mid-long term, that longer journey won’t be THAT bad.

Sun 05 Feb 2023 · 16:08Reply
@StokeyLitFest Another option which isn’t feasible unfortunately because of a few traffic islands would have been making Evering, Rectory and Northwold Roads temporarily 2-way so northbound traffic can bypass the High St entirely by turning right into Evering Rd and exit opposite Abney Park.
Sun 05 Feb 2023 · 16:05Reply
@StokeyLitFest Tricky one. Where else can the northbound traffic be diverted to other than Balls Pond Road to follow the bus diversion? No obvious northbound access if you turn right into Shacklewell Lane or right into Amhurst Road further up.

If the aim is to stop people from walking on that bit of the pavement should be barriers at each end. @TobyCrick @metecoban92 I don’t understand the thinking behind leaving such a gap there. Even if they didn’t have enough bollards the spacing between all of them could have been such that no large gaps are left, unless someone simply didn’t do their job here well enough.
