It may come as a surprise to some people, but Article 13 (Freedom of Movement) of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, doesn’t include the right to turn from Church St into Yoakley Rd or making a left turn from Barbauld Rd into Nevill Rd.

@Yashman67 @DRKRTS_DnB You’re welcome. Thanks for the enlightening conversation this morning. I often wondered what’s the association between a brutal, Nazi secret police and anyone who cycles. You clearly put some thought into this. ChatGBT doesn’t share your analysis by the way. https://t.co/DjYh63ju9q
Thu 30 Mar 2023 · 10:34Reply
@Yashman67 @DRKRTS_DnB That’s what the Gestapo were also notorious for you know. Picking one element out of the conversation and deflecting from the original point. In fact, that one of the main reasons why they were hated so much according to some historians.
Thu 30 Mar 2023 · 10:29Reply
@Yashman67 @DRKRTS_DnB I mean, yeah. If you take the whole racist, violent and brutal stuff out of what the Gestapo was then I can see why you’d draw parallel between the Nazi secret police and a hugely diverse group of people that paddle a two-wheel vehicle to get to work, home, meet friends etc.
Thu 30 Mar 2023 · 10:24Reply
@DRKRTS_DnB @Yashman67 Thanks for clarifying. The Gestapo were indeed notorious for doing things whether they made sense to the wider world. Just like cyclists. Got it. Have a good day.
Thu 30 Mar 2023 · 10:14Reply
@DRKRTS_DnB @Yashman67 If someone makes an association between cyclists and the Gestapo they should be able to explain their reasoning, that if they are aware of the history of the Gestapo, to link the two somehow. Are you able to do that? Or are you waiting for the other guy to do that? :)
Thu 30 Mar 2023 · 10:09Reply
@DRKRTS_DnB @Yashman67 Asking someone to explain why they use the name of a brutal, racist, secret police of an authoritarian regime when referring to cyclists isn’t policing anything. Policing would be telling that person they cannot do it and fine/arrest them if they do. I haven’t done that, did I?
Thu 30 Mar 2023 · 10:02Reply
@Yashman67 @DRKRTS_DnB How did you mean it then? What parallels do you see between cyclists and the brutal Nazi secret police, which made you write ‘Cycling Gestapo’ earlier?

@angelab2711 Regardless though, rush hour along main roads like Matthias Rd and Boleyn Rd will naturally be busier. Whether they are significantly busier post-LTN is subjective opinion. The traffic monitoring data shows increase of 10%-13% there. Is that a very significant increase?

@Hayleywhite16g1 @charlotte_gggg By the way, emergency services is also the reason as I understand it why bollards of any kind cannot be used in LTN filters and CCTV cameras have to be used instead.

@LtleGreen @theJeremyVine Unfortunately, while Stoke Newington High St is 1-way (northbound) we’ll keep seeing this as too many cyclists won’t consider using the side streets, including C1. TfL’s plan from 2018 to remove the 1-way system included a southbound bus lane, aimed at cyclists as well.
Mon 27 Mar 2023 · 12:29Reply
@charlotte_gggg @Hayleywhite16g1 I was told recently by a local councillor that ‘the emergency services are against speed bumps’, though it may be more in side streets than main roads. This may, or may not be, why there aren’t as many as you might expect.
Mon 27 Mar 2023 · 12:26Reply
@charlotte_gggg @Hayleywhite16g1 Enforcing speed limit is a broader problem in my view. For example, the High St and Rectory Rd are 20mph since this month, though I doubt that’s going to happen. All the Stoke Newington LTN boundary roads are 20mph if I’m not mistaken.
Mon 27 Mar 2023 · 12:17Reply
@charlotte_gggg @Hayleywhite16g1 Again, the fact we have a different experience of the same spot demonstrates it’s not as clear cut or perhaps our definition of considerable traffic is different. If anything, crossing the road there can be dangerous given the speeding cars in my experience.
Mon 27 Mar 2023 · 12:15Reply
@charlotte_gggg @Hayleywhite16g1 Such as what for example? LTN are designed to discourage short journeys by car by making driving less convenient, so some people consider alternative modes for such short journeys. That change doesn’t happen overnight. Any better way to reduce car usage?
Mon 27 Mar 2023 · 12:13Reply
@charlotte_gggg @Hayleywhite16g1 It’s clearly highly subjective and irregular as my observation as someone who’s there almost daily during the day is different. If the stretch outside the Army & Navy is anything to go by, I rarely see it jammed in either direction. It might get busy, but is it that much busier?

Mon 27 Mar 2023 · 11:55Reply
@Hayleywhite16g1 @charlotte_gggg According to this, traffic in Crossway is indeed up by 6.6%. Is that significant though? Is the road significantly busier than it used to be? My only point as someone who is there often, is that it’s very often not too busy, not even during the morning rush hour. https://t.co/kjb8plBGy8
Mon 27 Mar 2023 · 11:49Reply
@YourSUVsucks @Hayleywhite16g1 Here’s the latest traffic monitoring data the council shared. By the way, I’m not disputing certain boundary roads are considerably busier than before, but my impression is those are exceptions rather than the norm. It doesn’t appear to be THAT bad in Stoke Newington at least. https://t.co/HcuMRbPQwg
Mon 27 Mar 2023 · 11:41Reply
@Hayleywhite16g1 Of course it is. Point being is, the road isn’t as congested all the time or every day during rush hour as some people claim/fear. It wasn’t this morning at least. That’s not to say it’s never busy but then again, roadworks and traffic aren’t new.
Mon 27 Mar 2023 · 08:57Reply
@charlotte_gggg There was roadworks on the 18th outside Nando’s and traffic during that period, as expected, was slow in all the surrounding streets.
Mon 27 Mar 2023 · 08:52Reply
@charlotte_gggg When roadworks was happening in the Crossway/A10 junction, causing traffic delays in the surrounding area, or after the roadworks had finished?
Mon 27 Mar 2023 · 08:35Original
Rather disappointed this morning to see just 5 cars at the traffic lights in Crossway/A10 during the morning rush hour (8:24am). As it’s an LTN boundary road, I was expecting at least 20-30 given what some people claim all the “displaced traffic” is causing along these roads. https://t.co/BCKtZVTDKY

@thenewlove @irresponsabelle I disagree as I assume for the case it’s down to the atmosphere. People behind laptop screens like in Pret isn’t a ‘good atmosphere’ for a small, trendy cafe unlike someone reading a book. Esters likely don’t want to be a work-from-a-cafe type place. @iambrianjones @Keepercab @JamesFPeters @HackneyLabour @hackneycouncil THIS is shutting down a road to motor vehicles. These are small sections and not complete pedestrianisation of a road, nor are they examples of LTN filters, as LTN filters just restrict access from one direction, not limit access from an entire section completely like here. https://t.co/J7HsP3TrBl
Mon 20 Mar 2023 · 14:46Reply
@iambrianjones @Keepercab @JamesFPeters @HackneyLabour @hackneycouncil No road in Stoke Newington is shut to motor vehicle. LTN filters turn roads into a cul-de-sac, meaning the street is 100% accessible to motor vehicles but only from one end. The daytime Bus Gate restricts through traffic but every address in Church St is accessible 24/7 by car.

@oshea369 @metecoban92 Quite the mature counter argument :) do explain why you seem to feel a “no motor vehicle” restriction is less legitimate than a no entry restriction for example. Both limit your “freedom of movement” in a car as you describe it.

@oshea369 @metecoban92 By your logic, these are also restricting your “freedom of movement” in a vehicle. Are you also against them? Not being able to use a vehicle somewhere and drive wherever you want is as old as the Highway Code. https://t.co/FgsR8na084

@oshea369 @metecoban92 You are very free to move if you walk or cycle ;) news flash: being able to drive a vehicle everywhere isn’t a basic human right. You cannot ignore a no entry sign and drive into a one-way street for example and go wherever you want in a vehicle. Why would you think that?

@KatharinaH42 @time_rich How is that relevant to Manor Road in Stoke Newington though? The argument isn’t that there is no LTN boundary road in the country that isn’t negatively impacted, but that the ones in Stoke Newington, in my observation, actually aren’t as bad now as some like to argue.

@bjornksandberg Spoons is known as “god’s waiting room” for a reason. It’s not the atmosphere everyone looks for when they go out for a drink, but it has its benefits, most notably the cheap drinks as you pointed out.

@bjornksandberg Top of my local cosy pubs are the Shakespeare and the Rose & Crown, and the Auld Shillelagh. The Rochester Castle is many things but cosy it’s not. Also, obviously a chain with 1,000 pubs buying in huge bulks can easily undercut smaller chains, and definitely an independent pub.
Fri 17 Mar 2023 · 21:36Reply
@bjornksandberg Try the indoor part of the pub! :) I personally avoid the beer garden usually in favour of the cosy interior. Isn’t “community pub for older people” the definition of a Spoons??? The Rochester Castle is the oldest surviving Spoons in the country by the way!

@MattJWarr3n Buses, bikes and taxis go in both direction in Green Lanes quite evenly in my observation. You can see a bit of southbound traffic making its way from the right. I’ll check out the junction and possible impact and not on a Friday. Thanks!
Fri 17 Mar 2023 · 14:57Reply
@MattJWarr3n I’ll check it out midweek out of curiosity to see if the Friday factor plays into it, though either way it’s of course not a rigorous traffic monitoring study and is purely anecdotal. I’m not convinced that “people drive to work in central London” applies here to such an extent.
Fri 17 Mar 2023 · 14:46Reply
@MattJWarr3n Sorry, I thought it was the Manor Rd one. The question though still holds. Why would there be more southbound than northbound traffic in Green Lanes opposite Clissold Park in the morning in your opinion?
Fri 17 Mar 2023 · 14:40Reply
@MattJWarr3n Also, the temporary traffic lights are at a junction where that are permanent traffic lights, so while the temporary ones may be a bit slow, eastbound traffic in Manor Rd is always affected, hence this morning isn’t that different. I’ll wait for the lights to change next time :) https://t.co/8VKE6TgpzU

@HowarthCharles Yes. Tube strikes and roadworks happen but are exceptions and have always led to temporary traffic delays. My issue is with the way some people describe in horror how LTN boundary roads are significantly more congested now, when in reality that’s not the case across the board.

@HowarthCharles Thanks. Morning rush hour traffic is of course nothing new and whether the difference between 7:40am now versus pre-LTN is negatively significant is debatable and people have contrasting views about that. Thu 09 Mar 2023 · 22:06Reply
@issmith3 The problem is, that it may be easier for you as an individual, but if you step back and look at the overall impact of car usage in the borough, it’s not sustainable. Too many short car journeys, because it’s “easy”. Making it difficult will make some people consider alternatives
Thu 09 Mar 2023 · 22:04Reply
@issmith3 By the way, in a few years, according to current plans most of Hackney will be LTNed. Do you have a better solution to reduce car usage in the borough? That is, you think there’s a pollution and road safety problem that needs to be solved in the first place. https://t.co/NdsPlLucHP
Thu 09 Mar 2023 · 22:01Reply
@issmith3 Why? You can access both parks just fine, but depending where you are driving from (assuming you HAVE to drive) it might take you a bit longer. If you come from the A10 you simply go via Manor Rd, Lordship Park and Green Lanea to both parks. Very simple. Have you tried it?
Thu 09 Mar 2023 · 21:52Reply
@issmith3 Utility works cause a disruption a few times a year whereas the benefits of restricting through traffic in Church St and the surrounding areas are felt all year long. As driving around Hackney is becoming more of a ‘pain’ more drivers will ultimately make fewer short journeys.
Thu 09 Mar 2023 · 21:48Reply
@issmith3 The difference in High St congestion during utility works pre and post-LTN is, in my view at least, is negligible. Some cars on the left lane maybe were able to escape for a bit and rejoin the congestion further up, but I don’t think it made the difference you think it did.
Thu 09 Mar 2023 · 21:46Reply
@issmith3 A better solution would be what TfL suggested in 2018 and was on course to implement in 2020 whereby Rectory Rd would become 2-way and Brooke Rd and becoming eastbound and Evering Rd becoming 2-way so some northbound traffic could avoid SN High St altogether.
Thu 09 Mar 2023 · 21:44Reply
@issmith3 That shortcut made little difference in my view and ended up causing traffic delay in Manor Rd towards the A10 so it didn’t actually improve the situation overall. Better to use main roads than side streets as that’s what they are for. If there’s roadworks they get congested, yes
Thu 09 Mar 2023 · 21:37Reply
@issmith3 I mean that before the LTN, some drivers who’d see the traffic in the High St would try to bypass it by turning into Church St, left down Bouverie Rd, right to Manor Rd in order to rejoin the A10 opposite Stoke Newington Station, when often they’d just get stuck there. Pointless.
Thu 09 Mar 2023 · 21:13Original
A reminder. The 18 months LTN trial period ends on March 20th. x.com/StokeyUpdates/…
Thu 09 Mar 2023 · 21:04Reply
@issmith3 In my observation, whenever Thames Water digs up the High St, usually somewhere between Church St and Manor Rd, there was always traffic delays. It was always bad and joining traffic from pre-LTN Church St made it much worse and the junction would get completely blocked.
Thu 09 Mar 2023 · 21:02Reply
@issmith3 They are allowed to turn at any time of the day and drive through the Bus Gate after 7pm till 7am. Why would someone heading up the A10 towards Stamford Hill and beyond even need to turn into Church St? To end up in Manor Rd trying to rejoin the A10 after a cheeky “shortcut”?
Thu 09 Mar 2023 · 20:50Original
Some people seem to think that before Sep 2021, when the Church St Bus Gate was installed, utility works in the A10 didn’t cause traffic delays. Less traffic from Church St into the High St right now is a GOOD thing otherwise the junction would be completely blocked. x.com/issmith3/statu…
Thu 09 Mar 2023 · 20:45Reply
@issmith3 You do realise there’s utility work up ahead causing traffic delays and that if there was no Bus Gate in Church St you’d have more traffic flowing into the High St causing further delays, right? Also, the Bus Gate is 7am-7pm. Church St isn’t closed.

@HackneyYIMBY Do share other shopping streets in Hackney you feel are good candidates for a Bus Gate or other traffic calming measures. Isn’t it worth applying those measures where it’s possible than not doing anything because you have to be selective where you apply them?
Wed 08 Mar 2023 · 12:29Reply
@HackneyYIMBY It would be great if every shopping street in Hackney could be pedestrianised but the reality is that’s not possible. The conditions and character of Church St make it I believe an ideal candidate when it comes to introducing traffic calming measures to improve its quality.
Wed 08 Mar 2023 · 12:27Reply
@HackneyYIMBY I didn’t say that. I pointed out that a street like Church St, which is a shopping street that isn’t a busy main road like the A10 and Green Lanes, is such that can thrive even more if traffic is reduced. Other shopping streets aren’t viable candidates for such measures, right?
Wed 08 Mar 2023 · 12:20Reply
@HackneyYIMBY To clarify, I have no idea why the council chose to restrict daytime traffic in Church St but I am guessing that it’s because of its appeal and potential for alfresco dining in places for example, which is made more attractive in a street with reduced traffic.
Wed 08 Mar 2023 · 12:18Reply
@HackneyYIMBY Wholefoods is one of 113 shops and restaurants in SN Church St. The street’s appeal and attraction goes far beyond one organic supermarket. Compared to the A10 and Green Lanes I would categorise Church St as more trendy, village-like than those two and most others in the borough.
Wed 08 Mar 2023 · 11:46Reply
@HackneyYIMBY Which ones are you referring to? I think Church St with its 110+ shops, restaurants and unique village vibe in the area, compared to the High St or Green Lanes for example, is considered by the council a ‘destination shopping street’ worth protecting from daytime through traffic

@HSscorecard 40% of businesses in Church St have changed since 2015 (avg. since 1890 in Church St is 50% every 10 years), yet some people would argue a shop closing tomorrow is because of LTN when in reality there are many reasons why businesses close (e.g. mismanaged, retirement, move etc.)
Wed 08 Mar 2023 · 09:41Reply
@HSscorecard As I’m sure you know, various studies around the world show consistently that retailers hugely overestimate how many of their customers get to them by car. Church St is a vibrant street, especially on weekends and it even has a carpark for those that do need to drive over!
Wed 08 Mar 2023 · 09:39Reply

@Anthony23Bryant @WeAreCyclingUK “There are possibky more cars parked up inside LTNs” - That’s because LTN almost always cover side streets and purely residential streets with parking bays, unlike LTN boundary roads like Stoke Newington High St and Green Lanes, which don’t have parking bays, or have very few.
Tue 07 Mar 2023 · 18:44Reply
@Anthony23Bryant @WeAreCyclingUK Not very relevant point as the issue is more about car usage than car ownership. LTN is Low-Traffic, it’s not No-Traffic. It’s about those cars moving on roads for short journeys, which in some cases could be achieved by other means: Public transport, walking, cycling.

Tue 07 Mar 2023 · 17:58Reply
@Anthony23Bryant @WeAreCyclingUK Where’s the 90k figure by the way? Private hire cars remove the need for some to own a car, if they don’t need one all the time, and may not be able to use public transport, walk or cycle a particular journey. Some also use taxis of course.
Tue 07 Mar 2023 · 17:52Reply
@Anthony23Bryant @WeAreCyclingUK “That’s down to the individual and personal choice.” Not really though is it? Local authorities close roads and restrict vehicular traffic for various reasons. @Itsnotbay According to the council, more than 50% of people living within LTNs in Hackney live in social housing. There are £1.5m+ townhouses in LTN boundary roads like Lordship Park and Manor Rd, so the answer to the question “who gets…” is: a mixed group of people.

@Itsnotbay I don’t believe it’s that clear cut. The traffic monitoring data for Stoke Newington shows, as I understand it, that overall increase in the LTN boundary roads has been minimal at best. Narrow side streets were not designed to take on the level of traffic satnavs created.

I still don’t understand what point you are trying to make. ‘Safe’ is a very broad term. Have you checked for possible decrease over time at all?

Nearly 3 years since Lockdown and 18 months since the Church St Bus Gate was installed, the commercial vacancy rate in SN Church St is less than 3%(!), with 2 of the 3 empty sites being vacant for years. Fewer businesses in Church St closed in that period than the years before.
Tue 07 Mar 2023 · 07:47Original
Thanks to the Church St Bus Gate, there are actually LESS vehicles in the High St getting caught up in traffic as they wait to turn left into Church St. Also less eastbound traffic from Church St joining the High St, making the traffic delay worse. All in all, a positive outcome x.com/StokeyUpdates/…

@roozie52 @old_school_alps @YourSUVsucks You make it sound as if someone claimed LTNs eradicate all forms of street crime. Safer streets are also streets where you are less likely as a pedestrian or cyclist to get hit by a vehicle, for example. Are you claiming there’s increase in street crime? Same levels as pre-LTN?
Mon 06 Mar 2023 · 23:25Reply
@roozie52 @old_school_alps @YourSUVsucks I’m sorry, but I don’t understand if you are disputing the research’s conclusion that “overall, the introduction of a low traffic neighbourhood was associated with a 10% decrease in total street crime”. Are you?

@peterramsden2 Some of Church Street’s renowned restaurants and venues like the Vortex Jazz Bar before it closed, have been a destination for visitors for decades. Stokey has been a destination way before Sep 2021 when the Bus Gate was installed. I don’t see what has changed so dramatically.

@roozie52 @SophieCam @YourSUVsucks @old_school_alps “Overall, the introduction of a low traffic neighbourhood was associated with a 10% decrease in total street crime (95% confidence interval 7% to 13%), and this effect increased with a longer duration since implementation (18% decrease after 3 years).” westminsterresearch.westminster.ac.uk/download/d2fa1…

@peterramsden2 If you know Stoke Newington and Stoke Newington Church St specifically, you know it serves many locals as well as visitors and the Bus Gate made the street more pleasant. There are 112 shops and restaurants in Church St, with gentrification starting slowly in the mid 1980s.
Mon 06 Mar 2023 · 20:53Reply
@peterramsden2 Aren’t visitors from outside add to the diversity of an area? I don’t follow your logic here as to how pre-LTN through traffic contributed anything positive to Church St. It just passes from one end to the other, reducing road safety while increasing noise and pollution.
Mon 06 Mar 2023 · 20:50Reply
@roozie52 @SophieCam @YourSUVsucks @old_school_alps Street safety also refers to being safer from being hit by a vehicle, it doesn’t refer to every form of crime. Quieter streets may be safer because they have less traffic and lower speeds, reducing the risk of accidents.
Mon 06 Mar 2023 · 20:42Reply
@old_school_alps @roozie52 @YourSUVsucks Ruth, I don’t get the point you are trying to make, as you aren’t comparing crime levels pre and post-LTN implementation. Even if you did produce a before and after comparison, attributing increase or decrease in crime to LTN isn’t that straightforward as it’s just one variable.
Mon 06 Mar 2023 · 20:16Reply
@peterramsden2 “Disneyfication describes the commercial transformation of things or environments into something simplified, controlled, and 'safe'.” So 10,000 polluting, noisy vehicles driving through Church St as was the case pre-LTN is a good thing because it avoids the above description?
Mon 06 Mar 2023 · 20:13Reply

Guess what? This was June 2020 when there was the usual Thames Water roadworks in the High St. Thanks to the daytime Bus Gate in Church St since Sep 2021, at least now, when there’s traffic in the High Street, you don’t get Church St adding this much traffic to the congestion. x.com/StokeyUpdates/…
Mon 06 Mar 2023 · 19:37Original
If anything, at least now there’s less eastbound traffic from Church St making the situation worse. Before the Bus Gate, this congestion in the High St would cause a long delay along Church St as well, sometimes till Bouverie Rd. Now at least that’s less of an issue. x.com/StokeyUpdates/…

@BridgefordMark If you’re heading towards Stamford Hill Broadway and beyond you better try to bypass the whole thing via Seven Sister Rd and Amhurst Park but I doubt drivers ever have sufficient notice to make that detour. Those High St roadworks traffic were always an issue, and always will be.
