@ldner Which businesses were “deemed redundant” in your view? The commercial landscape of a street changes for various reasons. Some shops go out of fashion, technological advances render some obsolete (e.g. video rental shops), national decline of industry (e.g. sewing machine shops).

@thomashowson There are 112 active businesses in Stoke Newington Church St. I have no idea whether 10-15 different market stalls every Sunday will have a material negative impact on some of them. Doubt you can fit more than 15 stalls in the forecourt.

@thomashowson That’s why I asked yesterday what’s the % of local shops that have a stall in any of the other street markets in Hackney like Broadway Market. My feeling is the local shops have to co-exist with the market traders during the weekend. I have no idea if that’s considered a problem.

@Mr_Rafal Pretty certain it’s because of an ongoing issue with a sinkhole at that spot. The last fix resulted in a dip in the road that turns into a small pond when it rains. I suspect this is a most serious and final attempt to solve the issue once and for all.

@angelab2711 Regardless though, rush hour along main roads like Matthias Rd and Boleyn Rd will naturally be busier. Whether they are significantly busier post-LTN is subjective opinion. The traffic monitoring data shows increase of 10%-13% there. Is that a very significant increase?

@wtfstokey Yes, that would have been sensible and maybe it was considered and not implemented for some reason. I do think that post-LTN some people seem to now associate any traffic delay with LTNs, even though roadworks and diverted buses were always part of life and caused delays.

@LtleGreen @theJeremyVine Unfortunately, while Stoke Newington High St is 1-way (northbound) we’ll keep seeing this as too many cyclists won’t consider using the side streets, including C1. TfL’s plan from 2018 to remove the 1-way system included a southbound bus lane, aimed at cyclists as well.

@charlotte_gggg @Hayleywhite16g1 I was told recently by a local councillor that ‘the emergency services are against speed bumps’, though it may be more in side streets than main roads. This may, or may not be, why there aren’t as many as you might expect.

@charlotte_gggg @Hayleywhite16g1 Enforcing speed limit is a broader problem in my view. For example, the High St and Rectory Rd are 20mph since this month, though I doubt that’s going to happen. All the Stoke Newington LTN boundary roads are 20mph if I’m not mistaken.

@charlotte_gggg @Hayleywhite16g1 Again, the fact we have a different experience of the same spot demonstrates it’s not as clear cut or perhaps our definition of considerable traffic is different. If anything, crossing the road there can be dangerous given the speeding cars in my experience.

If the stretch outside the Army & Navy is anything to go by, I rarely see it jammed in either direction. It might get busy, but is it that much busier?

@DocklessLondon I suspect the ones near popular destinations like Stoke Newington Church St are busier than the bays that are in ‘random’ spots, but overall you see so many parked on pavements all over the place, often creating an obstruction right in the middle of the pavement.

Composting is coming to Clissold Park and will help improve sustainability in the park according o the park manager in the @clissoldpeople public meeting this morning.

Consultation about the future of the site of the Clissold Park paddling pool will commence once a consultation officer becomes available soon according to the park manager. It’ll be based on a previous consultation, so options for the site will be predefined as I understand it.

In the @clissoldpeople public meeting this morning there was the usual anti-social behaviour update from the park manager that windows in Clissold House and the Splash Pad pavilion were smashed by “15-16 year olds” according to the update and the windows had to be replaced.

Self-closing gates are going to be installed in the dog-free area behind Clissold House. More may be installed throughout the park in the future.

Surprised to hear at the @clissoldpeople public meeting today that the unpopular Splash Pad booking system will be retained when the Splash Pad opens in late April. Wasn’t it in place just to protect the newly laid grass last summer? (@mayorofhackney @carowoodley)

Refurbishment of the playarea in Clissold Park won’t happen this year according to the park manager just now in the @clissoldpeople public meeting. Extensive refurbishment of the playarea may happen next year.

@Microlambert I thought about that but there’s no other place really for those signs for southbound cyclists. The fact the signs aren’t on the other side just by the entrance to Butterfield Green, means in my view they refer to the small red section linking the pavements only.

@Stokebrewington @TobyCrick I can’t imagine cyclists would come to a complete stop there if someone is crossing, as they would at a blended crossing in Church St for example, so the best you can hope for/expect is for them to slow down at least when they know pedestrians have priority at that point.

@KatharinaH42 @time_rich How is that relevant to Manor Road in Stoke Newington though? The argument isn’t that there is no LTN boundary road in the country that isn’t negatively impacted, but that the ones in Stoke Newington, in my observation, actually aren’t as bad now as some like to argue.

@bjornksandberg Spoons is known as “god’s waiting room” for a reason. It’s not the atmosphere everyone looks for when they go out for a drink, but it has its benefits, most notably the cheap drinks as you pointed out.

@bjornksandberg Top of my local cosy pubs are the Shakespeare and the Rose & Crown, and the Auld Shillelagh. The Rochester Castle is many things but cosy it’s not. Also, obviously a chain with 1,000 pubs buying in huge bulks can easily undercut smaller chains, and definitely an independent pub.

@HowarthCharles Yes. Tube strikes and roadworks happen but are exceptions and have always led to temporary traffic delays. My issue is with the way some people describe in horror how LTN boundary roads are significantly more congested now, when in reality that’s not the case across the board.

@SophieCam Thankfully there are a few shops in Kynaston Rd and Albion Parade but I was referring to ~110 lost local shops: 50 in Allen Rd (now 4), 20+ in Nevill Rd (now 1), 20 in Petherton Rd (now 1), 4 in Albion Rd opposite Lavell St (now 0), 15 in Wordsworth Rd (now 0) to name few.

@kayfourbee Boils down to what are the boundaries of a “15min neighbourhoods”. The idea is to have essential amenities within a walking/cycling distance to reduce reliance on cars, and I wonder if it’s achievable in Stoke Newington. Was easier to shops locally when there more local shops :)

I suppose the challenge in Stoke Newington is that dozens of corners shops and small shopping parades in side streets have closed and converted to flats in the last 30+ years, so not everyone is within 15min or less from the shopping hubs: High St, SN Road, Church St, Green Lanes x.com/TheOxfordMail/…
