@LC1bully Out of interest, as LTNs merely create cul-de-sacs with every address in a street accessible by motor vehicle 24/7, but only from one end of the street, is it a matter of finding out early from which end of a street someone needs to be dropped off at? Is that practical? Thanks.

@brianbarou @jchermier By the way, this whole “newcomers from the Shires” and “self entitled middle class white” racism and classism you are coming up with isn’t cool.
Sun 30 Apr 2023 · 13:08Reply
@brianbarou @jchermier And you are placing way too much importance on through traffic in my opinion. Through traffic, by definition passes through heading to a different destination. Church St is a narrow shopping street. How much business do you think through traffic accounts for really?
Sun 30 Apr 2023 · 13:06Reply
@brianbarou @jchermier You are missing the point: All Stoke Newington Church St addresses and nearby parking spaces are accessible to those that need to drive here. The reality though, is that the street is packed and buzzing on weekends as it always has been if not more now it’s more pleasant.
Sun 30 Apr 2023 · 12:37Reply
@jchermier @brianbarou “self entitled middle class white” Reality check: Over 50% of social housing in Hackney according to the council is within LTNs. Researchers found that across London people in deprived areas were much more likely to live in or near a new LTN than people in less deprived areas.
Sun 30 Apr 2023 · 12:32Reply
@jchermier @brianbarou Stoke Newington Church St was always booming during the weekends in the spring and summer with low footfall during the week, not surprisingly when it’s cold and miserable, like many shopping streets. Daytime through traffic just made it less safe, noisier and more polluted.
Sun 30 Apr 2023 · 12:29Reply
@jchermier @brianbarou The though that through traffic contributed in any significant way to the bottom line of the 112 shops, cafes, pubs and restaurants in the street is silly. Businesses close all the time for many reasons. Approx. 50% of businesses in Church St change during a decade since 1890!
Sun 30 Apr 2023 · 12:26Reply
@jchermier @brianbarou Reality check: 116 commercial properties in SN Church St, with vacancy rate at a very low 3%. Businesses struggle these days for various reasons (inflation, energy bills increase etc.). Church St is a popular local shopping street and a weekend destination. Come and visit and see

@DocklessLondon Than obstructing someone’s front door? Both are unacceptable but I’d say that taking something without paying for it just pips it for me. Theft is a crime. Parking a bike outside someone’s house in an inconsiderate manner isn’t last time I checked, or is it??
Mon 24 Apr 2023 · 21:49Reply
@DocklessLondon Why is that? You’re jumping between too many issues and problems and at time conflating them, where I don’t think they are as linked necessarily. Hard to keep up! :) there’s inconsiderate parking, using Limes without paying, Lime’s attitude to parking, Hackney Council..
Mon 24 Apr 2023 · 21:45Reply
@DocklessLondon It’s not “taking it for free”, it’s “taking without paying for it”.
Mon 24 Apr 2023 · 21:25Reply
@DocklessLondon I also don’t think they care :) council’s like Hackney are committed to active travel and people Liming has great benefits and is a very good PR for the right reasons. The problem is it’s not perfect and managing how dockless bikes are parked is a massive challenge.
Mon 24 Apr 2023 · 21:22Reply
@DocklessLondon One though is likely illegal just like shoplifting, is it not? My view is that someone that takes something without paying for it is more morally bankrupt than someone that parks a bike outside an elderly person’s front door, which is of course totally unacceptable.

@DocklessLondon You almost make it sound as if it’s “ok” to use Lime bikes without paying for them because Lime itself isn’t great and needs to improve. Are you? :)
Mon 24 Apr 2023 · 21:14Reply
@DocklessLondon I could be wrong by I refer to a dumped bike as poor behaviour rather than a matter of right and wrong and something that’s more principled. Taking something without paying for it, knowing full well you’re required to pay for it, is “wrong”, it’s not just poor behaviour/conduct.
Mon 24 Apr 2023 · 21:10Reply
@DocklessLondon I don’t think the fact Lime “doesn’t care” about how many of its bikes are parked in the middle of pavements gives some people justification to use those bikes without paying. They know you cannot just hop on a bike and that payment is required in order to use it.
Mon 24 Apr 2023 · 21:08Reply
@DocklessLondon I think you are conflating two unrelated things here. Dumping a bike in the middle of the pavement without thinking of others isn’t a morality issue. I don’t think it’s ‘morally wrong’. Using a paid service without paying for it i.e. unauthorised use, is.
Mon 24 Apr 2023 · 21:00Reply
@DocklessLondon Sorry, don’t know anymore where you are doing with this :) it’s a paid service. Just because it’s easy to bypass the payment and use the bike for free doesn’t justify it and I reckon anyone over the age of 5 would know that.
Mon 24 Apr 2023 · 20:58Reply
@DocklessLondon They know they’ll get away with it and that apart from annoyed looks from some people who find the clicking noise annoying, there’s absolutely no consequence to them stealing a private hire bike without paying for the pleasure.
Mon 24 Apr 2023 · 20:57Reply
@DocklessLondon You push and run because you know full well that it require payment via an app. You didn’t just happen to take a tumble, landed on a Lime bike only to discover that it now magically works without having to pay. Come on :)
Mon 24 Apr 2023 · 20:55Reply
@DocklessLondon We clearly disagree on this point, and that’s ok. I think it’s a silly ad with silly text personally. I think don’t the ad agency spent too much time brainstorming this one. Perhaps there’s genuine intent but the execution is rather poor and likely to be ineffective in my view.
Mon 24 Apr 2023 · 20:51Reply
@DocklessLondon I don’t follow, sorry. Safe to say I’d argue that someone that knowingly goes on a a Lime bike without paying knows exactly what they are doing and that it’s wrong. The clue is in the loud clicking noise! :) doesn’t that behaviour demonstrate lack of morals?

@DocklessLondon I agree :) some people simply don't care and others are possibly simply oblivious and don't see the issue when the hop off and leave the bike in the middle of the pavement rather than a spot that would cause less of an obstruction.
Mon 24 Apr 2023 · 20:42Reply
@NotOurCat @DocklessLondon @limebike I can only speculate it's pressure from local authorities it has a contract with like Hackney Council (I hope!) for Lime to at least look like it's aware and doing something about so many of its bikes dumped in the middle of pavements.
Mon 24 Apr 2023 · 20:36Reply
@DocklessLondon I think that some people assume that parking a bike in a middle of a wide pavement isn't a big deal because people can walk around it or they reckon someone will book it in a few min so again, it being dumped in the middle of the pavement is "that much of an issue".
Mon 24 Apr 2023 · 20:34Reply
@DocklessLondon hmmmm... no. do you??? "Please make sure you park our bike which you stole by taking it without paying in a considerate manner. Yours truly, Lime" :)
Mon 24 Apr 2023 · 20:23Reply
@DocklessLondon My view is that some people were brought up to consider others around them and not be inconsiderate. I don't think the good parkers need a pat on the back and reinforcement they are doing the right thing. It's just to show that Lime is "aware" and "doing something" in my view.
Mon 24 Apr 2023 · 20:17Reply
@DocklessLondon I was commenting on the message, not the type of ad/street furniture which is a different topic altogether. My point was I doubt many people who dump Lime bikes in the middle of pavements will change their behaviour because of ads like this. I hope I'm very wrong!
Mon 24 Apr 2023 · 18:27Reply
@DocklessLondon But the ad is targeting those dump bikes in a way that creates an obstruction for pedestrians. Is an ad going to change such behaviour? Personally I doubt it very much. It’s a bit of PR for Lime to show they are aware of a problem they can’t or don’t want to fix. Not really.

@DocklessLondon @ak__shay @DocklessObs @DocklessBikeMan At the very least you expect bays at popular destinations. Stoke Newington is blessed with open spaces, yet there are hardly any bays in close proximity to them: Butterfield Green, Clissold Park and the Reservoirs. I’d think that’s the minimum requirement. https://t.co/zT5nVH3CyV

@DocklessLondon @DocklessObs @DocklessBikeMan Need to consider ease and speed of joining a bike hire service. Councils like Hackney rightly want to encourage people to adopt cycling (private or hire), especially as an alternative to short car journeys, so you want to keep the offering simple so people aren’t put off by it.
Sat 22 Apr 2023 · 17:30Reply
@DocklessLondon @DocklessObs @DocklessBikeMan Fundamentally though, you then create a docking station for a dockless bike hire service, so I’m not entirely sure if the two can coexist. People love the convenience of picking up a bike that might be outside your house, and leave it back there when you ride back.
Sat 22 Apr 2023 · 17:18Reply
@DocklessLondon @DocklessObs @DocklessBikeMan What about proximity detection (Bluetooth maybe?) so you can only end a ride if you are in close proximity to a bay or ideally inside it? If it gets you close enough you’re at least more likely to at least see the bay.

@DocklessLondon @DocklessObs @DocklessBikeMan I think we just have to learn to live with it :) hire bikes are great and have many benefits, but the dockless ones come at a cost. I refuse to believe all the ones that are dumped in the middle of pavements are those that were hacked and taken for a joyride.
Sat 22 Apr 2023 · 16:44Reply
@DocklessLondon @DocklessObs @DocklessBikeMan Docking stations are very expensive and Hackney Council is rightly working hard to make active travel more appealing and hire bikes is one obvious way of doing that. It comes at a price to pedestrians in many cases, which is a real shame. They are very popular for a reason.
Sat 22 Apr 2023 · 16:41Reply
@DocklessLondon @DocklessObs @DocklessBikeMan Again, I reckon too many people prefer to ride to their destination, especially at night and when it rains for example. Parking in any parking bay and then having to walk 5-10min or more isn’t an appealing proposition to say the least.
Sat 22 Apr 2023 · 16:27Reply
@DocklessLondon @DocklessObs @DocklessBikeMan As someone suggested here months ago, the solution might simply be having more parking racks around to be used by private and cycle bikes alike. You can’t one in every street corner but it would benefit all cyclists and hopefully reduce inconsiderate dumping of Lime bikes.
Sat 22 Apr 2023 · 16:16Reply
@DocklessLondon @DocklessObs @DocklessBikeMan Personally, I don’t think it’ll ever work. The whole proposition is that it’s a dockless bike. The parking bay are effectively a docking station so it makes no sense. People sign up for the convenience of pick up and drop off a bike anywhere, not in a small number of bays.
Sat 22 Apr 2023 · 16:15Reply

Sat 22 Apr 2023 · 15:46Reply
@DocklessLondon @DocklessObs @DocklessBikeMan This pair was parked this morning in Stoke Newington Church St close to the cycle hire parking bay in Fleetwood St, so clearly there’s still a long way to go before looking for those bays and parking in, or just next to them, becomes the norm. https://t.co/FcVhtmKf4a
Sat 22 Apr 2023 · 15:34Reply
@DocklessLondon @DocklessObs @DocklessBikeMan Unless users who submit of a photo of the park NOT in the bay get a fine I cannot see why it would make much difference. The convenience, and sometimes personal safety of riding up to your destination, especially when it rains for example, will always win in my opinion.
Sat 22 Apr 2023 · 15:29Original
Nice to see that Lime is letting its users know that in Hackney they MUST park in the council’s marked cycle hire bays. There are only 14 cycle hire parking bays in Stoke Newington. https://t.co/DwWWIKdB6f

@johnrobson87 @SanneDD @CyclingEdin @david_mccraw You mean using a “no motor vehicle” road sign to create a bus gate + exemptions? It’s down to what’s permitted in the Highway Code and it was created/approved by traffic engineers I’d think. @RantyHighwayman can provide the expert’s perspective!
Fri 21 Apr 2023 · 20:38Reply
@johnrobson87 @SanneDD @CyclingEdin @david_mccraw By the way, the reason a Bus Gate road sign isn’t used in SN Church St is because there’s an exemption to certain vehicles (Blue Badge holders in this case), as far as I understand. It’s also the reason why Bus Gate road marking cannot be used. https://t.co/uRBWwQKK04
Fri 21 Apr 2023 · 20:23Reply
@johnrobson87 @SanneDD @CyclingEdin @david_mccraw The Bus Gate, the blue dot, is half way up the road, pretty much ‘splitting’ it in the middle. It ensures that traffic on either side during day is local traffic to any of the addresses or the side streets. LTN filters limit access to the side streets or from the side streets. https://t.co/jvNek3tLJt

@david_mccraw @SanneDD To add context, the Stoke Newington Church St Bus Gate is a 20metre stretch half way up the road that restricts daytime through traffic (7am-7pm) to buses and local Blue Badge holders. All other vehicles can access any address in the street but cannot drive through the Bus Gate.

@DocklessLondon They were put in place specifically for hire bikes and there’s a sign and road marking next to it stating just that. In reality though they are used as regular bike stands. They look just like a bike stand and are often empty as the Limes are dumped on pavements ;) https://t.co/WbVblZ5Omo

Thu 13 Apr 2023 · 11:22Reply
@ldner The underlying point is that road closures is nothing new, and has been driven by different reasons over the years. Even a road that closed because of kerb crawlers creates other benefits e.g. less rat-running, quiet, safer and less polluted street.
Thu 13 Apr 2023 · 11:20Reply
@ldner The point I was making that people that are against road closures, irrespective of the reason for them, would have likely opposed them closing if it happened today, still stands. Do you think most anti-LTNers would have accepted the closure because it was due to kerb crawlers?

@jackstevensbass It’s almost amusing. Weekday footfall in Church St was always rather low and it hasn’t been a bustling shopping street since the 1950s probably when housewives spent the day in the local shops! :) it’s the lack of vehicles that make some people feel like it’s “too quiet” now.
Thu 13 Apr 2023 · 07:06Reply
@supalara By the way, shops tend to hugely overestimate how many of their customers drive to their shops, according to these three studies. Not the case for every shop I’d think, as some may genuinely rely on customer driving to pick up large items for example, but worth keeping in mind. https://t.co/mPuYD3spjA
Thu 13 Apr 2023 · 06:34Reply
@supalara Yes, that’s what I heard directly. My point was that it’s one shop out of 110+ in the street, so not exactly representing a trend of mass shop closures. It was a much loved local institution and always seemed busy to me, even after the Bus Gate.
Wed 12 Apr 2023 · 22:27Reply
@supalara 1. There are 111 businesses in Church St (116 commercial properties in total) 2. Commercial vacancy rate in Church St is very low. 3. The whole building was put on the market around the same time, which may, or may not had something to do with the shop closing. https://t.co/WK6xL20o0e

@timinenfield That’s my view, though on the weekend these days it definitively feels like a tourist destination for people from across the borough and further afield. There’s great buzz in the spring and summer during weekends when the street really comes alive. It’s terrific.
Wed 12 Apr 2023 · 18:03Reply
@timinenfield Church St was always a weekend destination and on a nice, sunny day it gets quite busy during the afternoon on a weekday as well. The streets are much quieter during Easter as well and I feel it’s mainly people that done live here that think Church St used to be Notting Hill 24/7
Wed 12 Apr 2023 · 17:59Reply
@timinenfield Some people associate constant street of through traffic with vibrancy, when in reality it’s just traffic passing through the street. It’s not like that through traffic resulted in dozens of more people in the street. It’s quieter now as far as noise pollution, that’s for sure.
Wed 12 Apr 2023 · 17:57Reply
@timinenfield Personally I don’t think so. I’m in Church St often and it’s the same and possibly busier on weekends as it always has been. Weekdays, especially when it’s cold and wet were always very quiet for obvious reasons. The street is absolutely packed on sunny weekends. No surprise.

@GoonerTaxi @GreenwichCycle You brought up Stoke Newington so I’m referring specially to that area which I know very well. Footfall in Stoke Newington Church St is up. Commercial vacancy rate is at its lowest in years. The street is packed on weekends. Come and visit! :)
Tue 11 Apr 2023 · 19:30Reply
@GoonerTaxi @GreenwichCycle The whole argument isn’t about people, cyclists or anyone for that matter, “spending more”. It’s about MORE people spending. You make a shopping street more pleasant by reducing traffic and more people will visit, enjoy it and spend money there. Very simple.
Tue 11 Apr 2023 · 19:29Reply
@GoonerTaxi @GreenwichCycle Nothing there about claiming that “cyclists spend more”. The claim that’s in question is that “mini Holland schemes increase footfall and 'boost business'”. You can of course dispute that but that refers to people walking, using public transport and cyclising.

@GoonerTaxi @GreenwichCycle They are not “all over the place” in Stoke Newington though. Don’t you know this area has been completely gentrified and is full of lifestyle shops, trendy restaurants, estate agents and cafes now? :)
Tue 11 Apr 2023 · 19:16Reply
@GoonerTaxi @GreenwichCycle It may come as a surprise, but inflation, cost of living, post-Covid and post-Brexit possibly bring more businesses to their knees than traffic restrictions.
Tue 11 Apr 2023 · 19:14Reply
@GoonerTaxi @GreenwichCycle If you know the area you know it’s 5metres from Stoke Newington Church hence is impacted by the daytime Bus Gate in Church St as well as the various LTN filters in the surrounding streets. Getting to it by car these days can be more time consuming for sure.
Tue 11 Apr 2023 · 19:11Reply
@GoonerTaxi @GreenwichCycle Which road are you referring to? There’s a popular garage in Defoe Road near Stoke Newington Church St, Defoe Tyers, which understandably has been against the traffic restrictions. It’s quite the exception though as most businesses here are shops, restaurants and cafes.
Tue 11 Apr 2023 · 19:09Reply
@GoonerTaxi @GreenwichCycle Over a time, when driving a car in the city becomes too much of a hassle and people who can avoid making short car journeys by car, which used to be quick and easy, there’ll be less pollution overall. Current car usage isn’t sustainable.
Tue 11 Apr 2023 · 19:08Reply
@GoonerTaxi @GreenwichCycle “Most local residents don’t want it that’s a fact” - what is this bold statement based on? :) traffic restrictions are designed to discourage short car journeys of less than 2 miles to free up the road for taxis, buses and car journeys that are essential for various reasons.
Tue 11 Apr 2023 · 19:05Reply
@GoonerTaxi @GreenwichCycle Of course you do :) guess what? I have. Some are in favour and some less so. It’s quite diverse. You cannot generalise. It depends on many factors. An MOT garage is less keen on traffic restriction than a restaurant that can now offer alfresco dining in a quiet street for example
Tue 11 Apr 2023 · 19:03Reply
@GoonerTaxi @GreenwichCycle But unless you’re pedestrianising a street there is access to cars and taxis. Every address in Stoke Newington Church St is accessible by any car 24/7. Between 7am-7pm there’s restriction on through traffic, so a journey to a shop by car MAY be longer. That’s it.
Tue 11 Apr 2023 · 19:01Reply
@GoonerTaxi @GreenwichCycle Again, in Stoke Newington which you brought up, no parking bays were removed in Stoke Newington High St or Stoke Newington Church St. Both are shopping streets and there no cycle lane in either. Daytime traffic in Church St is reduced due to restrictions on THROUGH traffic.
Tue 11 Apr 2023 · 18:59Reply
@GoonerTaxi @GreenwichCycle 1. I fail to see what Stoke Newington and Tottenham Court Road have in common 2. Taxis and all other vehicles can access every address in Stoke Newington 24/7. Some roads are now cul-de-sacs and Church St has a daytime bus gate in the middle. That’s all. No problem to access.
Tue 11 Apr 2023 · 18:57Reply
@GoonerTaxi @GreenwichCycle But you are making an assumption here that it isn’t predominantly the local community in the first place that uses the shops. It may or may not be the case but worth keeping in my view and it also depends on the type of business. You cannot generalise.
Tue 11 Apr 2023 · 18:55Reply
@GoonerTaxi @GreenwichCycle Rely on them how by the way? For offloading? If you’re thinking about customers then at least three studies in different countries including the UK concluded that retailers hugely overestimate the % of customers that drive to their shop than that it actually is.
Tue 11 Apr 2023 · 18:50Reply
@GoonerTaxi @GreenwichCycle “What percentage of residents in these areas actually cycle as opposed to driving” - I don’t think that’s the correct question. Some people cycle locally/short journeys and drive longer journeys for example. You’re ‘allowed’ to cycle AND drive. It’s all about the circumstances.

Or is it case that either those markets were curated carefully to not compete with the local shops or that they co-exist harmoniously, or that local shops suffer? https://t.co/nyi8XUXxye

@russskellon I’m just explaining how it works :) if you think the council should initiate an inspection of the 150+ buildings in the High St raise with it with your local councillors. You can use #grillphil to ask the mayor directly when he holds the next grill Phil session.

@russskellon The council tax pays for the council to dispatch a surveyor to inspect a structure that’s reported to the council as dangerous. It’s not the council’s job to simply go and inspect privately owned buildings en masse as a precautionary measure. hackney.gov.uk/bc-dangerous-s…
Sat 01 Apr 2023 · 15:32Reply
@russskellon Common sense has nothing to do with it. It’s about getting surveyors to inspect around 150+ buildings in the High St. There’s no law at present I’m aware of that requires private owners to get their property inspected on a regular basis like MOT. It’s not the council’s job.

@HowarthCharles Again, are you suggesting the council now inspects the majority of buildings in Stoke Newington High Street? It’s not the only main shopping street in the borough with mainly Victorian buildings. Why not then inspect all the streets? They are likely in the same condition.
Sat 01 Apr 2023 · 13:29Reply
@HowarthCharles Many of the buildings in the High Street are Victorian from the 1870s-1890s. Are you suggesting the council should inspect all of them? What about Church Street? There’s been three cases of fallen masonry in Church St in recent years I’m aware of.

@HowarthCharles Inspect every privately owned structure in the borough by its own initiative? Or does that simply apply to the right to inspect once alerted about a potential risk.

You can report a dangerous structure to the council. The council will send a surveyor to inspect it and appropriate action will be taken as required. The council isn’t responsible for inspecting privately owned structures otherwise. hackney.gov.uk/bc-dangerous-s… x.com/StokeyUpdates/…
