@DifficultParent @austerityhuh @sheridan100_a @ShimanoSteve @EllaRobertaFdn @visitcamberwell @LambethLabour @SocEnvJustice Why unfair? Reduced traffic is a selling point and local LTNs that created quieter and safer streets have likely increased the value of certain properties. My point was that you also get £3m properties in LTN boundary roads. Maybe would have been £4m if it wasn’t a boundary Rd :)

@Hayleywhite16g1 @Roger89835988 All the chatter on Twitter isn’t going to change anything because: 1. Hackney Council just adopted the @UK100_ pledge to reach Net Zero by 2030. 2. 75% of Hackney roads will be in LTNs by 2026. 3. The council’s target is to reduce traffic in the borough by 15% by 2026.

@Hayleywhite16g1 @Roger89835988 I’ve a couple of comments/questions about it since the filters were introduced but personally I wouldn’t describe as “many” or all of them as you suggested. @Hayleywhite16g1 @Roger89835988 The bottom line is that all the LTNs filters that are dotted around, and by 2026 75% of Hackney roads will be in LTNs, are making driving a car in Hackney inconvenient for everyone, irrespective where they live and where they are driving to. @Hayleywhite16g1 @Roger89835988 What’s your point exactly? All those car owners are impacted by road closures that make driving, especially short journeys, inconvenient. LTNs don’t distinguish between low and high income drivers. As long as people drive less when possible overall that’s a good outcome.

@marcus73 @metecoban92 @mayorofhackney Would have been great if this section of Bennett Rd could have pedestrianised with public seating, rain garden, bike stands etc. As far as I’m aware, required access for emergency services is likely the main reason why something like this cannot be be considered. https://t.co/2Vg4JmqmwN

@Hayleywhite16g1 @Roger89835988 As maps like this one show, patterns of car ownership from no cars to multiple cars per household, vary considerably in the borough, but overall the borough has one of the lowest car ownership figures in London. https://t.co/loU9BfHWC3
Wed 24 May 2023 · 08:45Reply
@Hayleywhite16g1 @Roger89835988 I don’t think anyone is expecting cars to disappear as the goal is primarily to reduce car usage by avoiding where possible short car journeys that clog and pollute the roads. That shift won’t happen overnight and not everyone can do it, but it’s the best option we have.
Wed 24 May 2023 · 08:40Reply
@Hayleywhite16g1 @Roger89835988 It’s low in the borough as a whole. You cannot look at one relatively small estate in Stoke Newington and consider it to represent entire borough. Using 2011 census car ownership in Hackney is around 35% (London average is 54%). https://t.co/CsEKpKT3FI

@Hayleywhite16g1 @Roger89835988 “more cars parked on it than ever” even if true though curious how you reached this conclusion, it’s irrelevant in the context of ensuring streets around the estate are quieter, safer and less polluted. Car ownership in far less relevant than car usage and short car journeys made
Wed 24 May 2023 · 08:07Reply
@Hayleywhite16g1 @Roger89835988 The filter at Clissold Crescent/Church St ensures that at least the east side of Burma Court is very quiet. Again, look at the positives as well. I think that ensuring some side streets are quieter and safer is better than not doing anything and allowing rat-running everywhere.
Wed 24 May 2023 · 08:02Reply
@Hayleywhite16g1 @Roger89835988 Hawksley Court Estate is between Sandbrook Road, which is extremely quiet now since the filters in Oldfield Rd/Kynaston, Nevill Rd/Barbauld Rd and Nevill Rd by Walford Rd. Albion Rd on the west side of the estate also quieter since the introduction of the Church St Bus Gate.
Wed 24 May 2023 · 07:57Reply
@Hayleywhite16g1 @indieHackney @Roger89835988 Police car noise? :) well, it’s behind the police station and we’re still in Hackney after all. Nevill Road, Beatty Road and Walford Road which surround the estate are quiet LTNs roads for local access only. Look at the positives as well.

@afcvicki All that is quite irrelevant really. that’s the democratic process we have in place and of the people that did vote these were the candidates that won the vote. There’s no “dictatorship from the council”, just elected council executing the plan it was voted in to deliver.

@afcvicki “what they want to do” is what they were elected to do by a majority vote that voted them in to implement a manifesto. If you disagree with it you can vote for candidates with other views, who may get elected and do what you vote them to do. Pretty simple really.

Tue 23 May 2023 · 07:16Reply
@indieHackney @Roger89835988 @andrewellson What’s the point you are trying to make exactly? The goal of LTNs is to reduce car USAGE by making short journeys inconvenient, as well as making streets safer for pedestrians and cyclists, and overall more pleasant. LTNs are VERY mixed with low to high income residents.

@Roomamakes To obtain a shop front trading licence, council officers measure the space that’ll be available for pedestrians and approve the licence if that space meets the requirements. I don’t know if one was granted there or not. There’s enough space I think between the chair and the tree.

@jab_world Fair enough. If public transport, cycling or walking isn’t an option, driving is always an option though journey time may be longer than before depending where you driving from. For years driving has been easy and convenient, leading to high car usage, which isn’t sustainable.

Tue 16 May 2023 · 19:24Reply
@old_school_alps @DocklessLondon @jaccsj @hackneycouncil @mayorofhackney Given how busy Broadway Market gets on weekends I wouldn’t be surprised if the council asked for it to be geo-fenced like parks so bikes couldn’t be dumped there.
Tue 16 May 2023 · 19:23Reply
@old_school_alps @DocklessLondon @jaccsj @hackneycouncil @mayorofhackney It states you must but doesn’t say anything will happen if you don’t. It’s just to raise awareness of the bays but ultimately the freedom to ride to your destination, especially at night or when it rains for example will win in most cases. It’s a dockless service. Bay = Docking.
Tue 16 May 2023 · 19:20Reply
@old_school_alps @DocklessLondon @jaccsj @hackneycouncil @mayorofhackney Certain areas like parks are geo-fenced so people don’t park there. Perhaps same things apply to markets or maybe you were close to London Fields.

@DocklessLondon @old_school_alps @jaccsj @hackneycouncil @mayorofhackney At least it’ll get them closer to the bay! :) though I’ve seen Limes dumped right next to a bay. @old_school_alps @jaccsj @hackneycouncil @mayorofhackney @DocklessLondon I see very little evidence on a daily basis that the app forces users to only park in the designated bays the council installed. Many are dumped all over the place and I wonder if there’s any effective enforcement to deter legislate users from parking on the pavement.
Tue 16 May 2023 · 18:36Reply
@old_school_alps @jaccsj @hackneycouncil @mayorofhackney I accept some Limes that are dumped in the middle of the pavement were possibly hacked but you really cannot say that all the dumped bikes were hacked by kids. I see adults log out and park the bike nonchalantly in the middle of the pavement quite often (@DocklessLondon)

@kev_tape Al fresco dining makes a street more attractive, which was the ultimate goal: “…encourage more people to walk, shop and spend time in the area.” Perhaps @metecoban92 could share his perspective about al fresco dining in the context of the pavement widening project last year. https://t.co/QNMeJxwbYl
Tue 16 May 2023 · 18:12Reply
@kev_tape In order to obtain a shop front trading licence there needs to be a minimum of available free space in the pavement, so restaurants that before the widening had no chance of getting a licence approved are able to do so now. Here are more examples in that widened section. https://t.co/5J7CyK75t0
Tue 16 May 2023 · 18:09Reply
@kev_tape You’re right it’s not mentioned explicitly in the comms. However I do recall the work mentioned, possibly by local councillors, as also intended to stimulate more trade in Church St by making it possible for the first time for businesses to apply for licence given the extra space

@QuigleyE4 @neilchristiex @IslingtonBC There are 112 shops, cafes, restaurants and pubs in Stoke Newington Church St yet hardly any public seating, due to narrow pavements even following widening last summer. Wed 10 May 2023 · 11:02Reply
@IsSaddleThereIs @HaringeyCyclist @hackney_cycling Stoke Newington High St is rather narrow though when you take into account the loading bays and bus lane. Maybe as TfL suggested, once you allow 2-way traffic in Rectory Rd to reduce northbound traffic in the High St.
Wed 10 May 2023 · 10:42Reply
@IsSaddleThereIs @HaringeyCyclist @hackney_cycling My understanding is the impact on buses by having C1 in Stoke Newington High St, made that option a nonstarter. TfL’s plan for the High St from 2018 included a northbound cycle lane and a southbound bus lane that meant to be used by cyclists. https://t.co/PO2AMgdRqS

@RizN16 The objective is to reduce car usage overall, mainly the high volume of short car journeys people make when it’s easy to drive through side streets. This is to reduce pollution and making streets safer to walk, play, cycle & make them quieter. Local access is always available.
Fri 05 May 2023 · 10:22Reply
@RizN16 If you mean the Stoke Newington Midsummer Festival (1993-2003), as I understand it, it ran out of steam as it was organised by volunteers, and the council’s attempt to create something similar with StokeyFest didn’t succeed. I think Health & Safety given popularity was an issue.

@RizN16 Making the street more attractive and pleasant by reducing traffic, having wider pavements (where possible), a few trees and parklets in side streets can only increase weekend footfall in my view. Clissold and Abney Parks are part of what makes Church St so attractive of course.
Fri 05 May 2023 · 10:16Reply
@RizN16 Judging by some tweets since the bus gate was installed on 20.9.21 it looks like some people genuinely think Church St was buzzing all week long whereas now it’s “dead” when in fact very little in my view has changed, apart from the fact there are fewer vehicles during the day.
Fri 05 May 2023 · 10:14Reply
@RizN16 Sorry if I misunderstood the point you were making. I’ve often explained and reminded people that Church St was always quiet during weekdays, not surprisingly when it’s cold and miserable, while in the sunny weekends it explodes with people, locals and visitors.
Fri 05 May 2023 · 10:06Reply
@RizN16 Chill out. No need to use such language. I understood your comment to suggest that high footfall during the sunny weekends doesn’t have the positive impact of local businesses as some may suggest, as you claimed “most people go to the park”. Was that the point you were making?
Fri 05 May 2023 · 09:59Original
Newsflash: On sunny weekends apparently most people in Stoke Newington Church St simply use it just to walk to the park while ignoring the 112 shops, restaurants, pubs and cafes on the way :) x.com/RizN16/status/…
Fri 05 May 2023 · 09:57Reply
@RizN16 Seriously? How do you know where they are all going? :) how do you know some of them don’t pop in to various shops on the way to the park? That’s the whole point of mooching around. You go out, visit shops, maybe get a few bits of food and drinks to take to the park etc.

@FaisalBhussain My pleasure. 112 shops, cafes, restaurants and pubs in Stoke Newington Church St, which also includes Abney Park, Clissold Park and St Mary’s old Church. Woodberry Wetlands nature reserve is 15min from Church St down Lordship Rd where the Red Lion pub is. Enjoy your visit!
