@JonniePound Once the new Mildmay LTN is installed, there’ll be a filter in Matthias Road allowing only northbound traffic, so even more southbound traffic would funnel into Bennett Rd, so hopefully a permanent enforcement camera will ensure the filter isn’t ignored often as has been the case

@JonniePound Yes, though lack of camera in the last three years coupled with the overall low-key nature of the filter (only one without planters) meant that compliance was low. From the playarea on weekends you would see a car driving through it every 5-10min by my observation.

@Microlambert @hackneycouncil The parking bays in Albion Rd were a good way to slow cars down, as you have to stop and allow oncoming traffic to proceed. Even they are removed they could have been replaced with rain gardens to have the same effect.

@Hayleywhite16g1 I can imagine. Living next to a public open space can be a blessing during the day, and a pain at night. I hear it often from people living opposite Clissold Park for example. It has a very active nightlife, and I’m talking about animals and bugs!

@TheGunnersPub When a driver approaches a junction and is about to make a turn, they need to check if there are pedestrians on the pavement and that the pavement and road are clear for them to proceed. I really don't understand how anyone can miss a bollard, unless not looking or going fast.

@Gemma_Champ @vickys_jewells Church St is quite different from Broadway Market in that it has a Fire Station, 3 bus routes and a number of side streets that'll require local access most probably. A street market in Church St itself, may or may not be feasible. Let's see!

The @clissoldpeople public meeting on Saturday was well attended. The meetings are a great opportunity to provide feedback to park management and hear about what’s happening and is being planned for the park. Next meetings: 15th Jul (AGM); 14th Oct, 11am in Clissold House.

In the @clissoldpeople public meeting on Saturday the issue of equal access to Clissold House was raised, as the back entrance to the lift is locked and to gain access you need to either call a number or book an appointment for someone to open the door. That’s poor accessibility.

One of the many informative updates from the @clissoldpeople public meeting on Saturday was that litter recycling attempts failed as all the recycling bins were too contaminated to be recycled. It’s a real shame. Unfortunately, it doesn’t sound like anything can be done about it.

@sclats01 For you information, turnover of shops in Stoke Newington Church St has actually been the lowest in years during Covid and since the introduction of the LTNs. Vacancy rate has consistently been extremely low at 3%. It’s a popular destination and very much in demand.

@sclats01 Ask them. Some businesses are struggling these days for a number of reasons such as cost of living crisis. Pretending any difficulty a business in a local shopping street experiences is solely down to restrictions on through traffic is rather lazy and naive.

@Musher2023 ‘Ordinary people’? If you actually knew Stoke Newington, you’d know that coffee shops are in reality of a small propitiation of an otherwise diverse commercial landscape. There’s nice weather at the moment. Come over and have a look. We even have two parks for you to enjoy!

@ellenieanna No. Just 7am-7pm restriction on through traffic. Every address is accessible by vehicle 24/7 from either side of the Bus Gate you can see on the photo where the pub is.

@old_school_alps I’d think like with other street markets you’d want to have the market next to shops so they benefit from the market footfall. Having it opposite the park would take it away from the commercial side of the street. Also, road and pavements there very narrow.

@RayburnMaarup Compared to the festivals in Finsbury Park, a relatively small market in an empty space in Clissold Park is harmless in comparison and would help to generate much needed income for the expensive upkeep of the park. Do you have other ideas? :)

@RayburnMaarup Again, what’s the issue with a market in the empty space next to Clissold House being used for a market? It only gets in the way of the boxing instructor ;) Pre-COVID the company that runs the one in Victoria Park was due to run a trial in Clissold Park by the way.

@RayburnMaarup Just a few examples: The windows and toilets in Clissold House get vandalised constantly as do the drinking fountains. Those are expensive repeated repairs, especially during the spring and summer months.

@theschoolcook Broadway Market doesn’t have bus routes through it and local access to side streets, unlike Stoke Newington Church St, which also has a fire station so I think it may prove tricky to say the least. That said, Church St closed twice as far as I remember since 2012.

@RayburnMaarup Parks are expensive to maintain, especially as funding available to councils as far as I’m aware has been reduced considerably, so commercial activities provide much needed revenue for public spaces. It’s a delicate balancing act without a doubt but I think a market is harmless.

It’s very mixed in that sense. It’s not a 24/7 crime scene as much as it’s not a crime-free sourdough-dominated neighbourhood:)

It can be a bit grubby in certain places, but is also very vibrant and ‘edgy’, which some people appreciate.

@LalehKhalili @LauraGowing I think it’s probably more about street drinkers, youths having a midnight party etc. and not really anything to do with ‘class anxiety’. I think such scenarios are rare at best and doubt a parklet under a street light would attract and encourage such behaviour.

@jab_world Closed? :) what are you on about? Every address in Stoke Newington is accessible by motor vehicle 24/7. There’s restriction on THROUGH traffic in some streets to ensure there’s less traffic in roads. LTN stands for Low traffic, not No traffic you know ;)

@Ed_MIAR From comments on Twitter I got the impression some people simply weren’t fans of the idea of a “hangout area” right outside their house. In a purely residential street you’d hope a parklet would serve and benefits the residents, promote socialising etc.

@Ed_MIAR I completely agree. I said some residents provided that feedback when the proposal for the parklets was put forward, which is why the benches have locks, as the parklets were originally meant to be locked at night as a compromise. They don’t get locked.

If there wasn’t a loading bay outside the Blue Legume, I think a double parklet outside the Acoustic Brassiere and the Blue Legume would have been packed.

@neilchristiex Same. The seating outside the Spence gets busy especially on weekends so great to have the alternative rather than having to walk to the park and look for a bench.

@LauraGowing I don’t know. My understanding is some residents, as well as businesses, objected to them being placed in some of the proposed locations. The plan was to have them locked at night to address residents’ concerns.

@LDLDN Also, for you information, a mobile camera has only been there infrequently in the last 6 weeks after repeated complaints to local councillors. The camera was removed from there 3 years ago and things will only get worse once Mildmay LTN is introduced in Matthias Rd.

@LDLDN I cycle / walk past there every day too and often see vehicles in both directions, especially on weekends. A lot of local mini cabs. If you spend an hour in the playarea on the weekend for example you’ll see a car every 5min. Try it, you’ll be amazed!
