@TigerDonald2000 @daddofriel Why Stoke Newington? During the 2011 England riots, while there were riots across Hackney, Stoke Newington was fairly quiet. Further down towards Dalston, Turkish business owners were outside protecting their restaurants, which was described at the time as “Baklava vs. Balaclava”

@JonniePound Once the new Mildmay LTN is installed, there’ll be a filter in Matthias Road allowing only northbound traffic, so even more southbound traffic would funnel into Bennett Rd, so hopefully a permanent enforcement camera will ensure the filter isn’t ignored often as has been the case
Fri 30 Jun 2023 · 12:02Reply
@JonniePound Yes, though lack of camera in the last three years coupled with the overall low-key nature of the filter (only one without planters) meant that compliance was low. From the playarea on weekends you would see a car driving through it every 5-10min by my observation.

@Hayleywhite16g1 I can imagine. Living next to a public open space can be a blessing during the day, and a pain at night. I hear it often from people living opposite Clissold Park for example. It has a very active nightlife, and I’m talking about animals and bugs!
Tue 27 Jun 2023 · 18:20Reply
@Hayleywhite16g1 Do it :) I’m sure the councillors will be supportive. You can create a Twitter account for it, raise awareness, put pressure to get it sorted, organise events and regular user group meetings. SN Common User Group is a good example to follow.
Tue 27 Jun 2023 · 18:10Reply
@Hayleywhite16g1 The Triangle could benefit from a user group that’ll be in regular contact with the council to improve the space, protect it and ensure it stops being and ASB hotspot if that’s the case today.
Tue 27 Jun 2023 · 18:08Reply
@Hayleywhite16g1 Any idea if residents have considered using the space somehow? Regular, small events during the summer for example i.e. reclaim it rather than accept it’s mainly used by street drinkers.
Tue 27 Jun 2023 · 18:07Reply
@Hayleywhite16g1 Another way of looking at it perhaps is that closing the fork will make the area more inviting for other people so the balance shifts between regular street drinkers and residents. If the space is left empty then someone will ‘move in’.
Tue 27 Jun 2023 · 18:04Reply

Tue 27 Jun 2023 · 13:23Reply
@TheGunnersPub I’ve never seen a “Bollard ahead” warning sign. I think drivers are expected to use their eyes. Plenty of space to make a turn there and if you go slowly, as you should when exiting the road, surely you’d feel it as soon as you hit it and can stop, no?

@vickys_jewells @JCAlexandra The Farmers Market is down the A10 when the question was about the possibility of a Church St Market that might invigorate the area and pull even more people on weekends than it gets now. Also, a street market is different than a Farmers Market in various ways.
Mon 26 Jun 2023 · 16:42Reply
@Gemma_Champ @vickys_jewells Church St is quite different from Broadway Market in that it has a Fire Station, 3 bus routes and a number of side streets that'll require local access most probably. A street market in Church St itself, may or may not be feasible. Let's see!
Mon 26 Jun 2023 · 16:41Reply
@Gemma_Champ @vickys_jewells Who knows where this potential future street market will be?? maybe it'll be between Albion Road and Clissold Road and then only the 393 will be affected but not the 73 and 476.

@vickys_jewells @Gemma_Champ The question put forward was broad and hypothetical. Whether a future street market will result in full or partial closure of Church St, I'd think even with diversions it'll be accessible by public transport. Let's wait and see if it actually ever happens! :)

The @clissoldpeople public meeting on Saturday was well attended. The meetings are a great opportunity to provide feedback to park management and hear about what’s happening and is being planned for the park. Next meetings: 15th Jul (AGM); 14th Oct, 11am in Clissold House.

In the @clissoldpeople public meeting on Saturday the issue of equal access to Clissold House was raised, as the back entrance to the lift is locked and to gain access you need to either call a number or book an appointment for someone to open the door. That’s poor accessibility.
Mon 26 Jun 2023 · 09:54Original
One of the many informative updates from the @clissoldpeople public meeting on Saturday was that litter recycling attempts failed as all the recycling bins were too contaminated to be recycled. It’s a real shame. Unfortunately, it doesn’t sound like anything can be done about it.

@sclats01 Do you have better ideas how to reduce car usage in Hackney and London more widely to improve air quality by the way? Or should we stick with the status quo and cross our fingers?
Mon 26 Jun 2023 · 08:58Reply
@sclats01 For you information, turnover of shops in Stoke Newington Church St has actually been the lowest in years during Covid and since the introduction of the LTNs. Vacancy rate has consistently been extremely low at 3%. It’s a popular destination and very much in demand.
Mon 26 Jun 2023 · 08:55Reply
@sclats01 Ask them. Some businesses are struggling these days for a number of reasons such as cost of living crisis. Pretending any difficulty a business in a local shopping street experiences is solely down to restrictions on through traffic is rather lazy and naive.

@Musher2023 ‘Ordinary people’? If you actually knew Stoke Newington, you’d know that coffee shops are in reality of a small propitiation of an otherwise diverse commercial landscape. There’s nice weather at the moment. Come over and have a look. We even have two parks for you to enjoy!

@old_school_alps I’d think like with other street markets you’d want to have the market next to shops so they benefit from the market footfall. Having it opposite the park would take it away from the commercial side of the street. Also, road and pavements there very narrow.

@HackneyLFUG @RayburnMaarup @carowoodley @clissoldpeople Again, the current market that operates in Clissold Park a few times in the summer, has been a great harmless attraction in my view. @HackneyLFUG @RayburnMaarup I’ve referring specifically to Clissold Park. The available space for a market next to Clissold House, assuming that’s the site in the park that might be considered, is small and I don’t think markets there to date have been problematic. Different vibe and scale than Broadway M.
Sat 24 Jun 2023 · 16:24Reply
@HackneyLFUG @RayburnMaarup “market profits are reinvested in Markets” - So no portion of the revenue from a market goes into helping to maintain the park? I’m not talking about Broadway Market, but a potential future market IN Clissold Park (@carowoodley @clissoldpeople)
Sat 24 Jun 2023 · 16:22Reply
@HackneyLFUG @RayburnMaarup The impact Broadway Market has on London Fields is far greater in scale and impact to that of the relatively small markets that take place now and then next to Clissold House. @RayburnMaarup Compared to the festivals in Finsbury Park, a relatively small market in an empty space in Clissold Park is harmless in comparison and would help to generate much needed income for the expensive upkeep of the park. Do you have other ideas? :)

@RayburnMaarup Again, what’s the issue with a market in the empty space next to Clissold House being used for a market? It only gets in the way of the boxing instructor ;) Pre-COVID the company that runs the one in Victoria Park was due to run a trial in Clissold Park by the way.

@RayburnMaarup Parks are expensive to maintain, especially as funding available to councils as far as I’m aware has been reduced considerably, so commercial activities provide much needed revenue for public spaces. It’s a delicate balancing act without a doubt but I think a market is harmless.
Sat 24 Jun 2023 · 15:26Reply

@LeeW6699 @jonnorris12 @manaboutdogblog It’s still an inner-city London district so street crime is unfortunately part of the reality of living here, but the area still has a lot going for it. It’s very mixed in that sense. It’s not a 24/7 crime scene as much as it’s not a crime-free sourdough-dominated neighbourhood:)

@LeeW6699 @jonnorris12 @manaboutdogblog Isn’t is the price you pay when an area is clean, nice and has a lot going for it, which makes it more attractive and desirable? Not much demand to live in a rundown, ‘sad’ area that has little positive to offer. Simple supply and demand.

@LeeW6699 @jonnorris12 @manaboutdogblog Yep. My point was that the A10, the busiest part of Stoke Newington, may not seem ‘nice’ to some, but I think that’s often the case with a busy A road. It can be a bit grubby in certain places, but is also very vibrant and ‘edgy’, which some people appreciate.

@LalehKhalili @LauraGowing I think it’s probably more about street drinkers, youths having a midnight party etc. and not really anything to do with ‘class anxiety’. I think such scenarios are rare at best and doubt a parklet under a street light would attract and encourage such behaviour.
Thu 15 Jun 2023 · 13:14Reply
@LalehKhalili @LauraGowing Hopefully the fact the parklets haven’t become the antisocial hotspot some feared, means other streets in the area will welcome them in the future, rather than object to them.

@jab_world Closed? :) what are you on about? Every address in Stoke Newington is accessible by motor vehicle 24/7. There’s restriction on THROUGH traffic in some streets to ensure there’s less traffic in roads. LTN stands for Low traffic, not No traffic you know ;)

@Ed_MIAR @old_school_alps Closing Church St to vehicles once a month on a Saturday in the summer would have been great but probably isn’t feasible given bus routes and access to side streets, though at that frequency and with sufficient notice maybe one day it could work.
Thu 15 Jun 2023 · 09:40Reply
@Ed_MIAR @old_school_alps But what about:
- The 73, 393 and 476 buses
- Access to side streets (Fleetwood St, Summerhouse Rd, Lancell St, Kersley Rd, Marton Rd, Woodlea Rd, Lordship Rd, Lordship Terrace, Woodlea Rd)
- Deliveries to the shops ?

@dasilvajums @Ed_MIAR I wouldn’t think that a parklet under street lights in a residential street will attract much, if any, antisocial behaviour because it’s so visible and residents are likely to call the police if it gets too noisy or suspicious looking.

@old_school_alps @Ed_MIAR Unfortunately, Church St is too narrow to have something like this outside the busy restaurants like the Good Egg, Escocesa, Blue Legume and Acoustic Brasserie, even if only during the summer months. https://t.co/XvpDdsHVKk
Wed 14 Jun 2023 · 21:57Reply
@Ed_MIAR From comments on Twitter I got the impression some people simply weren’t fans of the idea of a “hangout area” right outside their house. In a purely residential street you’d hope a parklet would serve and benefits the residents, promote socialising etc.
Wed 14 Jun 2023 · 21:55Reply
@Ed_MIAR I completely agree. I said some residents provided that feedback when the proposal for the parklets was put forward, which is why the benches have locks, as the parklets were originally meant to be locked at night as a compromise. They don’t get locked.
Wed 14 Jun 2023 · 21:37Reply
@old_school_alps @RikkiAlexander @LauraGowing That’s very valid. In lieu of public seating in Church St I think parklets make sense in the surrounding side streets. If there wasn’t a loading bay outside the Blue Legume, I think a double parklet outside the Acoustic Brassiere and the Blue Legume would have been packed.
Wed 14 Jun 2023 · 21:29Reply
@old_school_alps @RikkiAlexander @LauraGowing My point is that if they already wait, then having a parklet won’t encourage them to wait or increase anti-social behaviour, unless you think that’s the risk? Won’t waiting at a parklet at night draw more attention to them?
Wed 14 Jun 2023 · 21:20Reply
@old_school_alps @RikkiAlexander @LauraGowing If street drinkers are already there, then would having a parklet make any difference? They may avoid something so obvious.

Wed 14 Jun 2023 · 20:17Reply
@LauraGowing I don’t know. My understanding is some residents, as well as businesses, objected to them being placed in some of the proposed locations. The plan was to have them locked at night to address residents’ concerns.

Two small, less known public green spaces in Stoke Newington worth keeping in mind during the hot weather if you’re looking for shade and a peaceful open space:
1. Allens Gardens in Bethune Road close to Manor Road
2. The Quaker Burial Ground in Yoakley Road close to Church St https://t.co/hUqm6mr0s8

@Hayleywhite16g1 It’s easy to forget or ignore the fact that roads are busy because of excessive car usage, often when an alternative for a short journey is possible. Those alternatives will hopefully become more viable. Doing nothing to try to reduce car usage isn’t an option.
Thu 08 Jun 2023 · 08:39Reply
@Hayleywhite16g1 Once more and more drivers making short car journeys (less than 2 miles) realise it’s not worth the hassle and will ditch the car, if possible, in favour of other options then bus journeys like the 106 will be quicker. Is there a better option in your view to reducing car usage?
Thu 08 Jun 2023 · 08:29Reply
@Hayleywhite16g1 Behaviour change and modal shift in how people travel doesn’t happen overnight or even 6 months. A more relevant point in my view is that traffic increase in SN boundary roads has been minimal at best rather than drastic increase as some objectors claimed. It never happened.
Thu 08 Jun 2023 · 08:26Reply
@Hayleywhite16g1 @UK100_ What does it mean “when it suits”? The point is the council is moving ahead with ambitious plans, which some people don’t agree with, and I shared the Big Picture figures to show why talking about traffic counters at this point is pointless in my view.
Thu 08 Jun 2023 · 08:13Reply
@Hayleywhite16g1 I think talking about traffic counters is irrelevant at this point in time because: Hackney Council adopted the @UK100_ pledge to reach Net Zero by 2030. The council’s target is to reduce traffic in the borough by 15% by 2026. 75% of Hackney roads will be in LTNs by 2026.
Thu 08 Jun 2023 · 08:09Reply
@Hayleywhite16g1 So that one instance, assuming data from that counter was in fact used given the diversion, applies to the accuracy of traffic counters everywhere else? :)
Thu 08 Jun 2023 · 07:56Reply
@Hayleywhite16g1 Here’s the traffic analysis for Green Lanes and Lordship Park from the 2nd and 3rd reports that were published during the trial period https://t.co/4fKSZLNYPl

‘Induced Demand’ - When increasing the supply of something (like roads) makes people want that thing even more i.e. More roads create ‘new drivers’ rather than providing existing drivers more space. Objectors seem to dispute any data that the council shares or that’s published by academics, because they believe those sources and their methods are ‘biased’ somehow. @old_school_alps @Stokebrewington At the end of the day, while there are legitimate grievances, LTNs is a political issue that’s driven by a Green, people-first rather than car-first agenda. @Stokebrewington Studies show business owners tend to hugely overestimate how many of their customers drive to their shops.
