@parcelman007 @DifficultParent @metecoban92 @cristo_radio Some people weren’t fans of the smoking ban to say the least. Should the government have ‘listened’ to them and not introduce the ban? You’ll never get consensus and sometimes have to push for a change for the long term benefit, some people don’t see or care about.
Mon 31 Jul 2023 · 18:14Reply
@parcelman007 @DifficultParent @metecoban92 @cristo_radio Amongst local businesses that protest against traffic calming measures, you’ll also find those that’ll tell footfall has increased and benefited their business, that they can offer for the first time alfresco dining on widened pavements in quiet, less polluted streets.
Mon 31 Jul 2023 · 18:12Reply
@parcelman007 @DifficultParent @metecoban92 @cristo_radio And listening to people is also listening to those that value quieter, safer and less polluted streets, those motorists, pedestrians and people that cycle that want to see people and public transport prioritised over private cars. Plenty of those around you know.

@parcelman007 @DifficultParent @metecoban92 @cristo_radio Listening to people resulted in local Blue Badge holders being exempt from Bus Gates in Hackney. Some people don’t like or believe in change, and are comfortable with the status quo, often for selfish reasons. Car dependency isn’t sustainable, whether we like it or not.

@DifficultParent @metecoban92 @cristo_radio While we’re looking at numbers, worth remembering that the 11 anti-LTNs councillor candidates got just 2,000 votes combined(!) in the last local elections. The loud, angry monitory against traffic calming measures doesn’t translate to votes when it matters.
Mon 31 Jul 2023 · 15:59Reply
@parcelman007 @DifficultParent @metecoban92 @cristo_radio Consultation is not a referendum. It’s used to elicit views and ideas to improve a proposal and it may or may not lead to a proposal being scraped completely. It’s down to the people who look at the bigger picture, long term goals and vision they were elected to deliver.
Mon 31 Jul 2023 · 12:00Reply
@DifficultParent @metecoban92 @cristo_radio So for every proposed policy by elected council officials in N16 would you suggest canvassing opinions from 68,636 people? :) Consultations, which aren’t referendums, and are meant to elicit views not votes, are open to the public to respond to. You work with what you get back.

@cavallino28 On a serious note, residents parking permit is for a zone, not a specific, reserved parking bay you rent on the public highway to use as a private parking space. 2,700 parking bays across the whole borough is probably a handful at best per street so plenty left still.

@SteveWi38180020 @jonjamesmiller I can't help thinking that if this cheese and wine shop was in a more prominent location with higher footfall than Manse Road, like Church Street for example, it would have lasted longer (assuming the quality, pricing, service etc. were good). It was quite invisible there. https://t.co/MVmaweKnkD
Sun 23 Jul 2023 · 17:05Reply
@SteveWi38180020 @jonjamesmiller on top of all that, I suppose there's also a question of whether given the popularity of online shopping, would people actually go to a physical shop in their neighbourhood to get something 'useful' they can order on Amazon. What do you have in mind specifically by the way?
Sun 23 Jul 2023 · 17:03Reply
@SteveWi38180020 @jonjamesmiller Church St is a Conservation Area so the small, artisan shops cannot be merged into a larger shop. On one hand it protects the character of the street with small retail units, but on the other hand options given the size are somewhat limited I'd think.
Sun 23 Jul 2023 · 17:01Reply
@SteveWi38180020 @jonjamesmiller As far as Church St goes though, as well as other locations to an extent, the retail units are often very small while the costs are high so they often end up being a boutique or eatery. Something more 'useful' often requires a larger site for stock etc.

@stokespur What I actually said was that if one business loses a customer but a different business, that’s closer to that lost customer, gains in the process a new customer then overall the net outcome is a positive one in my view.

@stokespur Sounds like you’ve found a closer alternative, which allows to spend less time driving there on that rare occasion you need the car serviced, so someone gained a new local customer, which I think is a positive overall.
Sun 23 Jul 2023 · 10:22Reply
@stokespur So the extra 10min on that rare occasion isn't worth it? If you really like the garage I'd think it's worth it, and if you have a closer alternative and end up making a shorter car journey to it, that's a good outcome overall in my view. Defoe Tyers still looks very busy to me.
Sun 23 Jul 2023 · 10:21Reply
@stokespur So you'd drive from west of the Bus Gate then before? Is there a more local charity shop that can benefit from your donations? in which case, it's not all THAT bad at the end of the day.
Sun 23 Jul 2023 · 10:18Reply
@stokespur well, think about all the people though that don't bother driving short journeys though if they realise alternatives are better. If you HAVE to drive somewhere, that's OK. When getting somewhere by car is very convenient, some people would make short journeys, which is a problem.
Sun 23 Jul 2023 · 10:16Reply
@stokespur If it's a lot of bags, public transport can indeed be an issue, I agree. What's the difference in the car journey from where you are coming from to the shop, now compared to pre-LTN please?
Sun 23 Jul 2023 · 10:05Reply
@stokespur Can you get to Mind charity shop using public transport? The 73, 476 and 393 stop pretty much outside the shop.
Sun 23 Jul 2023 · 09:57Reply
@stokespur Why 'Almost impossible'? where are you coming from?? Even with all the LTNs, I can't imagine it's more than extra 10min drive on that occasion you need to get there, which I wouldn't think is too often. If you rather make a shorter journey to a place that's closer that's good.

@peakrob The point was Hackney isn’t as polluted as some people argue, because they believe displaced traffic is causing a significant increase in air pollution. Based on some people’s comments about what they perceive to be the impact of displaced traffic, you’d think we’re in Hillingdon
Fri 21 Jul 2023 · 13:45Reply
@binny_uk The point was actually that Hackney is one of the least polluted London boroughs. Some people would have you believe it’s as bad as Hillingdon because they claim boundary roads are now flooded with ‘polluting displaced traffic’, when in reality Hackney isn’t THAT bad.

@TheGunnersPub No. A Bus Gate restricts through traffic to buses only at the very least. The one in Church St was installed on 20.9.21 half way up the road to restrict through traffic from 7am-7pm to buses and local blue badge. Any address in the street can be accessed by any vehicle 24/7. https://t.co/1GGaZXYbDU

@CycleCalm @Omeraznik Not at all. The Bus Gate is half way up the road so any vehicle has access from either side up to the Bus Gate, at which point you need to use one of the side streets as an “exit route”. There are side streets and cul-de-sacs off Church St so vehicle access is needed 24/7.

@KatharinaH42 @Cedders68 @JohnJohnStewart @JillBelch If the busy, main road someone lives in is busy as it always has been with some, possibly insignificant increase overall, then I think that’s acceptable. Do they expect Blackstock Rd for example to become as quiet as a local access only side street?
Wed 05 Jul 2023 · 07:48Reply
@KatharinaH42 @Cedders68 @JohnJohnStewart @JillBelch Objectors argue that the majority of boundary roads are now a mess while those who are in favour argue ‘problematic’ boundary roads are isolated instances. Traffic monitoring data is disputed by the objectors on regular basis as is any study that doesn’t support their world view.
Wed 05 Jul 2023 · 07:45Reply
@KatharinaH42 @Cedders68 @JohnJohnStewart @JillBelch There’s also plenty of buy in I think by people who appreciate the swift action and often the immediate positive impact the measures have.
Wed 05 Jul 2023 · 07:42Reply
@KatharinaH42 @Cedders68 @JohnJohnStewart @JillBelch I’m afraid the conspiracy theorists who think that an LTN enforcement camera represents Big Brother and that planters create “15min city ghettos” give objectors as a whole a bad reputation. Also those who portray LTNs as a class and race war, unjustifiably in my opinion.
Wed 05 Jul 2023 · 07:37Reply
@KatharinaH42 @Cedders68 @JohnJohnStewart @JillBelch Whether people believe or not in ‘traffic evaporation’, I think the sentiment by policy makers is that modal shift doesn’t happen overnight and can take years, and that “tactical urbanism” (speedy infrastructural intervention) is the only practical approach to reduce car usage.
Wed 05 Jul 2023 · 07:35Reply
@KatharinaH42 @Cedders68 @JohnJohnStewart @JillBelch I completely get that’s not an answer that would satisfy someone suffering from considerable traffic increase in their road right now. Perhaps when looking at the bigger picture the benefits simply outweigh the damage, as no solution will ever be perfect.

@KatharinaH42 @Cedders68 @JohnJohnStewart @JillBelch Northwold Road in Clapton is another road for example I read people here complain about, and I suspect with good reason, though many other boundary roads appear to be just fine and at best, are busy as they have been always been. I gather the approach is you have to stick with it
Wed 05 Jul 2023 · 07:30Reply
@KatharinaH42 @Cedders68 @JohnJohnStewart @JillBelch I think the issue that while some boundary roads may indeed suffer a significant increase, others don’t and perhaps even the majority of them don’t yet proponents seem to want to remove all LTNs as a matter of principle i.e. because of the politics and agenda they represent.
Tue 04 Jul 2023 · 23:57Reply
@KatharinaH42 @Cedders68 @JohnJohnStewart @JillBelch It’s an analysis of the change in the Stoke Newington boundary roads which some people claimed would be gridlocked 24/7 as a result of the restrictions, when the reality is very different than that. Some are a bit busier, some are not. It’s not catastrophic as some feared.

@KatharinaH42 @Cedders68 @JohnJohnStewart @JillBelch I bet some of the measures you listed have been considered but were probably considered too impractical (unfortunately). Curbing car usage, especially the many short car journeys, by restricting through traffic isn’t perfect but is perhaps the practical option of them all.

@KatharinaH42 @Cedders68 @JohnJohnStewart @JillBelch I’m not saying it’s not an option. @KatharinaH42 @Cedders68 @JohnJohnStewart @JillBelch The data in the report is from the first few months of the Bus Gate in SN Church St, in late 2021. That’s 18 months ago. Things change in 18 months so it’ll be good to see more recent data, though as the report states, quantifying the impact of SN LTN specifically isn’t possible. https://t.co/ZS6tjt8ZpR

@HackneyYIMBY @Stokebrewington By the way, ahead of the introduction of the Church St Bus Gate in Sep 21', parking bays in the 'Exit Routes' were removed as more traffic was expected in those narrow side streets. A few were reinstated after a few months. A number of parking bays will be removed from Albion Rd.

@Stokebrewington Yes, possibly though the streets there are wider than the streets south of Church St so they feel spacious even with parked cars. We only get that vibe here when there’s parking suspension due to utility works :)

@Stokebrewington Yes, though while the road closures there were introduced 50 years ago, you still have parking bays in every street and it’s not pedestrianised streets with cycle paths. The streets are local access only, which is different than removing cars completely from the street.

@Stokebrewington Yes. Took decades though as far as I’m aware so if it’s going to be replicated in London we still have a long way to go before similar views will be seen around here. Also linked to providing good alternatives to encourage the modal shift.

@Stokebrewington I think the political will from the council is there and a lot has been happening on the ground already of course. Whether all parking bays could be removed from a residential street like the one in the photo is an interesting question, assuming that’s even the ultimate goal.

@Hackneycyclist Hackney’s LTNs as I’m sure you know are just as old, though the scale and rate has picked up in recent years. Also, whereas historical road closures were to tackle kerb-crawling, the current environmental, people-first and road safety agenda antagonises certain people.

@Hackneycyclist Well, given the council’s ambitious plans to have 75% of Hackney roads in LTNs by 2026, I think it’s safe to say it also recognises the opposition is a noisy minority.
