@LD259100 @bleak_district @TGSRPM @Hayleywhite16g1 I get that. I was merely putting forward a view I suspect some people have, as they see Abney as the countryside almost, as far as an attitude of 'let dogs run around and do their business in nature' sort of thing.

@LD259100 @bleak_district @TGSRPM @Hayleywhite16g1 I have no idea so it was more of a question. I can imagine some people genuinely believe that unlike parks like Clissold Park and Finsbury Park, their dogs' poo contributes positively to biodiversity in Abney Park and that 'no one will see it anyway so what's the big deal'..
Thu 31 Aug 2023 · 20:08Reply
@He_Len_Len @LD259100 I think @AbneyParkN16 is an anomaly to an extent and people these days have different views of what it is exactly. To some it's a wild park with 'some broken headstones' everywhere, and for others it's a cemetery first.
Thu 31 Aug 2023 · 20:06Reply
@He_Len_Len @LD259100 It went from a private arboretum to a commercial cemetery run by the Abney Park Cemetery Company. It opened as a garden-cemetery as I mentioned, though I don't think mid 19th century Victorians considered it being a garden for dogs off-leads running around there :)

@LD259100 @He_Len_Len what is a 'park' anyway in this context? The name Abney Park dates back to the 18th century when it was a private arboretum so I wouldn't read that much into it. It was then Abney Park Cemetery and the 'Cemetery' was dropped from the name a while ago.
Thu 31 Aug 2023 · 19:19Reply
@He_Len_Len @LD259100 I think, could be wrong, that’s it’s a park by name only and technically is both a historical cemetery and a nature reserve. It’s a public, open space nonetheless. It was created as a garden-cemetery for recreation as well as burials, though it has evolved into something else.

@Nico_Macdonald @peterwalker99 @mrhazzers @TonyTassell 1. Most of Hackney may be LTNed in a couple of years. 2. Research carried out by Loughborough University showed that nearly half of all Hackney children were living below the poverty line before Covid. Gentrification is completely irrelevant when debating LTNs. https://t.co/VDBzpQRiDK

@Roger89835988 @PipSinks @heidisturgess Agree. ‘Vibrant’ is relative and 1980s vibrancy in Stoke Newington is different than today, but there are lot of going on in the area still, as far as cultural and community events, festival etc., 112 colourful shops, cafes, restaurants and pubs in Church St and so on.
Mon 21 Aug 2023 · 09:25Reply
@PipSinks @heidisturgess Cheap and vibrant is often accompanied and the result of decay, dereliction and neglect, which while creating an edgy, arty, independent vibe also often mean unsafe, unpleasant place. Nice, safe, tidy areas are in more demand and are hence more expensive. Can’t have it all :)

@carowoodley Thank you. @cavallino28 Thank you. 10 years in April! :)
Sun 20 Aug 2023 · 18:04Reply
@cavallino28 I agree and in my view given a left turn still exists next to the one that’s been closed, a balance has been achieved. You have a different view on the matter and that’s ok. The decision was made and it’s being implemented at the moment so we’ll both need to get used to it.
Sun 20 Aug 2023 · 17:57Reply
@cavallino28 Slowing down in general is a good thing in a road like Albion Road. What’s wrong with that? It’s 20mph limit anyway. Waiting for 15-20 seconds behind a bus to make a turn is really not the end of the world, is it?
Sun 20 Aug 2023 · 17:54Reply
@cavallino28 Newington Green isn’t a tiny bit of Albion Road that can be closed off when there’s an alternative next to it. If you’re not a fan of making streets just a bit greener with fewer access points for motor vehicles where possible, that’s ok. I’m sure you’ll manage the left turn.
Sun 20 Aug 2023 · 17:51Reply
@cavallino28 Yes. As you say, it’s a bit tight but I don’t think that should be the deciding factor to decide whether or not to close the other section. If anything, drivers actually need to slow down and be more careful there when making the turn, unlike the one that’s now closed. https://t.co/Jg0w1TKKYY
Sun 20 Aug 2023 · 17:45Reply
@cavallino28 Or it’s a matter of striking a balance to make the street more pleasant and safe for pedestrians and people who cycle, as they can cross the closed section safely.
Sun 20 Aug 2023 · 17:42Reply
@cavallino28 You see? The closure makes no difference to access. There’s going to be a rain garden there, which will help make Albion Road just a bit more pleasant and nice to walk through. What’s wrong with that? https://t.co/A0l2Y213Zi
Sun 20 Aug 2023 · 17:36Reply
@cavallino28 Why? You can still make a left turn at the next left a few metres up the road to get to all the same destinations. It’s closing a tiny section when there’s an alternative right next to it. What’s your point exactly?

@London_FCA @JeffreyRumney @BobFromAccounts Businesses close for many reasons, especially at a time when people spend less because of a cost of living crisis. Attributing any business closure directly to traffic calming measures is quite impossible, unless a critical mass of driving customers state they’ve stopped coming.

@aTouchOfFilm @jonburkeUK It defiantly not as bad as some people claim in my view, that’s for sure. I hear from local shops that have been asked to pay deferred rent and struggle or their landlord hiked the rent, or customers tell them they spend less these days. Many issues other than a daytime BusGate.
Wed 09 Aug 2023 · 08:14Reply
@aTouchOfFilm @jonburkeUK Church St is a very popular destination for locals and people from across the borough and beyond. 2 years since the Bus Gate was installed on 20 Sep 21 footfall and cycling are up and more eateries offer alfresco dining. The street is buzzing as always on sunny weekends.
Wed 09 Aug 2023 · 08:08Reply
@aTouchOfFilm @jonburkeUK It seems it’s easy for some to focus on the 4 shops in Stoke Newington Church Street that are closed (two of which have been closed for a very long time) rather than the 100+ that are open :) https://t.co/QaeYvATCOn
Wed 09 Aug 2023 · 08:04Reply
@aTouchOfFilm @jonburkeUK Yes. It closed in April last year. I was told it’ll go on the market next year after it’s refurbished to be a retail unit. It’s takes time to find a tenant, do the work, sometimes there are legal and paperwork issues etc. Again, rare for a shop to stay empty for years. Only 2.
Wed 09 Aug 2023 · 08:01Reply
@aTouchOfFilm @jonburkeUK That’s funny, mine too! :) it’s a very diverse group of businesses with people with very different views. The angry, unhappy ones are the noisiest which is natural. I hear a real mix of views about the Bus Gate which isn’t surprising. Some of those opposing have queues outside :)
Wed 09 Aug 2023 · 07:04Reply
@aTouchOfFilm @jonburkeUK While businesses close for many different reasons, it’s worth keeping in mind that the turnover of shops in Stoke Newington Church St is the lowest it has been in recent years. The commercial vacancy rate is very low at 3% and it’s very rare for a shop to remain empty for long.
Wed 09 Aug 2023 · 06:59Reply
@aTouchOfFilm @jonburkeUK 10-15 businesses in Church St (10%) are vociferously against the Bus Gate, from what I’ve gathered from local businesses who attended meetings with the council on LTNs and are in the local businesses’ WhatsApp group. Most it seems don’t really care or are in favour of the BusGate
Wed 09 Aug 2023 · 06:38Reply
@aTouchOfFilm @jonburkeUK There are 112 businesses in Stoke Newington Church St (excl. pubs). How many is ‘many’ and what’s your source? 10? 20? 50? Some of the local businesses I’ve talked to mentioned the cost of living crisis as the real problem rather than a restriction on daytime through traffic

@givati123 @briseglace What are you on about? Pay for what? You charge for the journey and plan the best possible route the address. If the journey to the extract address is longer due to restrictions, you can give people the option, but their address is always accessible by car.

@givati123 @briseglace Say what?? :) “Freedom of movement, mobility rights, or the right to travel is a human rights concept encompassing the right of individuals to travel from place to place within the territory of a country, and to leave the country and return to it.”
Mon 07 Aug 2023 · 16:32Reply
@givati123 @briseglace If you are a taxi driver you are required to drop people at the exact address they provided and plan your journey accordingly. There’s always access from one side of a “local access only” street. If you choose not to, that’s disservice. Plain and simple.
Mon 07 Aug 2023 · 16:30Reply
@givati123 @briseglace You know, just because someone drives a car, doesn’t mean they free unlimited access through every residential street. It’s not a basic human right and cul-de-sacs aren’t anything new. What’s all the fuss and drama about?
Mon 07 Aug 2023 · 16:28Reply
@givati123 @briseglace Why useless? They are very useful for car owning residents in the streets, some of whom may rely on a car due to disability for example, and also delivery drivers, taxi drivers, Uber drivers, emergency services and a lot of other drivers when you think about it properly.
Mon 07 Aug 2023 · 16:23Reply
@givati123 @briseglace What do you mean “closing access to roads”. You realise LTNs are about making streets ‘local access only’ meaning you can access each address by car 24/7, right? The restriction is on THROUGH traffic, meaning traffic that uses the street to get to somewhere else. Very simple.

@Sprinzette The gravity of the situation and the need to act decisively and quickly by introducing relatively easy-to-implement interventions, means I think you can’t satisfy everyone. If Uber availability suffers a bit, but more streets are quieter, safer and less polluted it’s worth it.
Sun 06 Aug 2023 · 22:43Reply
@Sprinzette Once you deter the many drivers that take a car out for a short journey of 2 miles or less from making such journeys, people that REALLY need to drive will enjoy from less congested roads. Too many cars use the roads when driving anywhere is too east and convenient.
Sun 06 Aug 2023 · 22:40Reply
@Sprinzette If you need to get from the High St to Green Lanes, then Bethune Road to Amhurst Park and then Seven Sisters is surely a longer way to get to Green Lanes, isn’t it? An LTN is planned for that area by the way. https://t.co/7pwKi9LS9K
Sun 06 Aug 2023 · 22:36Reply
@Sprinzette It’s no surprise by the way that most people in my experience who object to terrific calming measures, have no practical alternative to reducing car dependency. They either don’t think it’s a problem in the first place or happy to maintain the status quo for various reasons.
Sun 06 Aug 2023 · 22:31Reply
@Sprinzette The thing is some people believe traffic behaves like water in pipes and all of it gets pushed if it’s blocked, when studies have demonstrated that because human behaviour is involved, traffic actually behaves like gas and some of it evaporates over time. Seems illogical to some.
Sun 06 Aug 2023 · 22:25Reply
@Sprinzette This is the full list from the last report the council shared. What makes you think most of the traffic has been pushed to Manor Rd? Also, any traffic from Manor Road to Green Lanes has to go through Lordship Park, so the Lordship Park data accounts for it (down 8.3%). https://t.co/fogLeGHBOv

@CycleCalm @hoxtonrich @angus_f_h @CyclingMerton Yes and you have boundary roads in Stoke Newington like Lordship Park and Manor Road that are purely residential. I think it boils down to traffic and air quality monitoring, and the impact LTN has had, if it had any. Here the 18-months report for Lordship Park and other roads. https://t.co/BtHRovylTp
Wed 02 Aug 2023 · 17:48Reply
@CycleCalm @hoxtonrich @angus_f_h @CyclingMerton I see. Thanks. Even with some traffic evaporation over time, traffic has to go somewhere once areas become local access only, so where is it meant to go? A main road would be a better option than a narrow, residential street if you had to pick one, no?
Wed 02 Aug 2023 · 17:03Reply
@hoxtonrich @CycleCalm @angus_f_h @CyclingMerton If it wasn’t for a fire station, 3 bus routes and need for local access to side streets, Church St could have been possibly pedestrianised in part or fully. Restricting daytime through traffic is probably the only viable option to make it more people-friendly along with trees etc
Wed 02 Aug 2023 · 16:59Reply
@hoxtonrich @CycleCalm @angus_f_h @CyclingMerton I don’t think “High Street” as a term is all that relevant here. It’s about relatively narrow shopping streets like Church St, that aren’t a main road and have the potential to be even more attractive if they are made more people-friendly (less cars, trees, wider pavements etc.)
Wed 02 Aug 2023 · 16:56Reply
@hoxtonrich @CycleCalm @angus_f_h @CyclingMerton Not necessarily though. The 7am-7pm Bus Gate in Stoke Newington Church St (B104) means drivers need to use other B Roads like Manor Rd (B105) and A Roads like Green Lanes (A105) because the side streets are filtered. Difference is Church St has 112 shops, schools and nurseries.

@Roger89835988 So I do wonder if it's a case of them not getting bookings or them not accepting bookings. They may end up passing onto customer the extra cost of petrol to make the detour, which they would consider to be putting people off.
Tue 01 Aug 2023 · 23:13Reply
@Roger89835988 If you can manage it, you can agree to meet 'on the other side' of the filter and meet them half way, but that option isn't something everyone can manage e.g. disabled, small children, heavy luggage etc.
Tue 01 Aug 2023 · 23:11Reply
@Roger89835988 From experience, the problem you run into is that they cannot or will not take bookings if they consider them to be 'too long' because of the filters if they don't have anyone nearby. From their office to Woodlea Rd for example between 7am-7pm requires a detour.
