#OnThisDay in 2021, a daytime Bus Gate in Church St and 5 LTN filters were implemented. In Church St, which has 112 businesses, 6 pubs, 2 schools, 2 nurseries and 2 parks, footfall and cycling have increased. Traffic on 'boundary roads' largely unchanged, per traffic analysis. https://t.co/jTFlzk94N9

@Hayleywhite16g1 Cities that expanded roads to try and tackle congestion discovered it didn’t help because you get more people using the roads when there’s more road to use (‘induced demand’). The reverse is also true: Less roads/access = less people using them.
Fri 22 Sep 2023 · 08:33Reply
@Hayleywhite16g1 Parking spaces are available in backstreets, not main roads, so it’s only expected there’ll be higher car ownership there. Again, backstreets are very diverse, as are some boundary roads and the issue being tackled is car usage, for short journeys, first and foremost.
Fri 22 Sep 2023 · 08:30Reply
@Hayleywhite16g1 Delayed transport won’t change if traffic calming measures weren’t in place because there are too many cars on the roads, with a third of car journeys in London very short at 2 miles or less. Car usage has to go down, and traffic calming interventions are the best way to do that.
Fri 22 Sep 2023 · 08:23Reply
@Hayleywhite16g1 With a 3rd of car journeys in London being 2 miles or less, the real issue is car usage, not car ownership. We should aim to reduce car ownership but traffic calming measures are targeting primarily the many short car journeys people make when it’s easy to drive around.
Fri 22 Sep 2023 · 08:21Reply
@Hayleywhite16g1 More than 50+ of social housing in Hackney are in LTNs and in boundary roads like Lordship Park and Manor Road you also find £2m houses. Again, streets whether back streets or ‘boundary roads’ are more diverse than you may think.
Thu 21 Sep 2023 · 21:13Reply
@Hayleywhite16g1 “everyone else’s” - what does that actually mean? Who is “everyone else”? Hackney streets are very diverse and mixed. The leafy, quiet back street with expensive extensions also have social housing, elderly couples who’ve lived there for decades, house shares and so on.

@kevlarflex Mildmay LTN next year with a southbound Bus Gate in Boleyn Road will reduce the southbound traffic in Matthias Rd significantly as it becomes local traffic to Pellerin Road, Matthias Rd, Cowper Rd, Bennett Rd and a bit of Boleyn Rd.

@kevlarflex Are those figures different from those the council published and sent to residents at the end of the trial period? https://t.co/PjGNhTnaMT
Thu 21 Sep 2023 · 17:10Reply
@Hayleywhite16g1 Sorry, I don’t get your point. By 2025 75% of Hackney is planned to be LTNed. The majority of Hackney residents, a very mixed bunch in every way possible, will live in an LTN. https://t.co/ufZQ2RHjOC
Thu 21 Sep 2023 · 16:39Reply
@Hayleywhite16g1 “Stoke newington LTNS drivers have the biggest motors ever” - Is that based on official data or is a personal view? :) LTNs now cover half of Stoke Newington. No such thing as “LTN drivers” because they cover very mixed streets and households. Most SN housing estates are in LTNs.

Turnover of shops in Church St, where since 1890 50% of the businesses have changed during each decade, has been the lowest it has been in recent years and that’s with the Cost of Living Crisis since late 2021. Current commercial vacancy rate in Church St is extremely low at 3%.

There are also two nurseries in Defoe Rd which use Church St daily to get to Clissold and Abney Parks, and also a secondary school in Clissold Rd close to Church St. There’s a variety of residential properties in Church St from many flats above shops, houses and Kennaway Estate.

@jwestjourno It’s between the buzz of Dalston and Stoke Newington High St. There’s footfall as it’s in a main road, but the location feels to me a bit “middle of nowhere” for a pub given its surroundings. I don’t think a gastro pub will work there. A football boozer? Not sure. Thoughts?

@trafficcone36 @PauloCampbell Do you have a better idea how to reduce car usage in order to improve air quality and road safety? Restricting through traffic and making driving more difficult is an ‘easy’ intervention compared to the alternatives.
Thu 14 Sep 2023 · 13:09Reply
@trafficcone36 @PauloCampbell A third of car journeys in London are 2miles or less. LTNs are designed to deter such journeys, which end up on main roads like Green Lanes at the moment. As more and more people realise it’s not worth the hassle for a short journey, Green Lanes will have less traffic.
Thu 14 Sep 2023 · 13:07Reply
@trafficcone36 @PauloCampbell The data tells a different story. Not to belittle a 7.5% increase but it’s certainly not 30% as you claim without basis purely based on personal, subjective observation. Decisions are made using data, not subjective opinion.
Thu 14 Sep 2023 · 13:03Reply
@trafficcone36 @PauloCampbell Which part of Green Lanes by the way if you don’t mind sharing. I’m often in the section between Newington Green and Manor House and rarely see any congestion. Gets busier during rush hour as expected, but not the gridlock you’re describing. When and where exactly?
Thu 14 Sep 2023 · 12:57Reply
@trafficcone36 @PauloCampbell Green Lane was always a main road with considerable traffic. It’s an A Road (A105), like Stoke Newington Road for example. A-Roads are classed as major roads that link regional towns and cities. How much quieter was it really before 20th of September 2020?
Thu 14 Sep 2023 · 12:52Reply
@trafficcone36 @PauloCampbell So you’re disputing traffic counters? On what basis exactly?
Thu 14 Sep 2023 · 12:51Reply
@PauloCampbell @trafficcone36 There is one already where the road is wide enough between Manor House and Aden Terrace, though not always in both directions. This is the section along Clissold Park. https://t.co/xSpbm4V1mX

@kosintime A taxi journey is long enough for the driver to plan it so they enter the street from the side that’s open to traffic. It may not even mean any significant increase in journey time, depending where it starts. In my experience, difference in duration and cost is often very small.
Thu 14 Sep 2023 · 07:24Reply
@kosintime @neilofharringay @DalstonLtn 20mph speed limit was only introduced early this year and there are no cameras so he must mean Stoke Newington Road, which the wider, 2-way section between West Hackney Church and Crossway.
Thu 14 Sep 2023 · 07:22Reply
@kosintime If you start making exceptions based on “I need my car for work” you’ll find yourself drowning in requests from pretty much everyone. Some people will have a very clear case but many others will try to claim they “must” drive for their work. I don’t think it’s practical.
Thu 14 Sep 2023 · 07:21Reply
@kosintime Taxis are required to take passengers to the address they specified. Every address is accessible by car 24/7 in an LTN. A taxi driver can and need to plan the journey with the filters in mind so they can drop the passengers at their destination. There’s no excuse not to do that.
Wed 13 Sep 2023 · 23:40Reply
@kosintime @neilofharringay @DalstonLtn Got it where? There are speed cameras in Stoke Newington Road and Rectory Road but not in Stoke Newington High St.
Wed 13 Sep 2023 · 23:23Reply
@kosintime May I ask why though? Deliveries and cabs can still get to every address, the difference is the time to it may be longer depending on the journey. Are you thinking about the cost of the cab journey? The time it would take a delivery to arrive? Thanks.

@Salut_London Noted.
Wed 13 Sep 2023 · 22:56Reply
@Salut_London It's happening in parallel. When you restrict through traffic in residential streets you make them safer for people to cycle and it becomes an option it wasn't before. Road safety is the number 1 reason why people don't cycle more or cycle at all for example.
Wed 13 Sep 2023 · 22:55Reply
@binny_uk @jennyfmorgan I agree to an extent, but I don't think all the cars you see today going southbound down Boleyn Road to the A10 via Crossway are coming from the North Circular :) Some of those journeys are likely short and will be reduced over time, but not all of course.
Wed 13 Sep 2023 · 22:48Reply
@Salut_London Not quite. Once those short car journeys reduce overtime as people have better alternatives in the form of better and safer cycling infrastructure and better public transport, congestion won't be as bad. It doesn't happen overnight.
Wed 13 Sep 2023 · 22:25Reply
@Salut_London 2015: "Over one third of all the car trips made by London residents are less than 2km" (london.gov.uk/sites/default/…). To an extent, congestion is by design to deter such short car journeys when an alternative such as public transport, walking or cycling is possible.

@briseglace @Semakaleng @metecoban92 You can see here that because of the northbound cycle lane, there’s be just one northbound lane for traffic, so to avoid congestion some of that traffic will be able to use Evering and Manse Rd (new eastbound lane) to get to Rectory Rd and use a new northbound lane. https://t.co/ZXGW1TIcYo
Wed 13 Sep 2023 · 07:06Reply
@briseglace @Semakaleng @metecoban92 It’s to allow northbound traffic to bypass the High Street and thus reduce traffic in the High St as I understand it. I guess that’s a goal as the plan was/is to have a northbound cycle lane in the High St.

Abney is a nature reserve, whether some people accept that fact or not. Dogs off-lead have negative impact on nature reserves, whether some people accept that reality or not. https://t.co/oz9ddgtwhu

@carvalhoCAP @treeruss @old_school_alps @clissoldpeople “dogs have not stopped nature from taking over” - No, because that process happened first and foremost in the 1980s when you didn’t have as many dogs in Abney. Also, that’s not the issue. The issue is protecting the rich ecology that’s there now from dogs off-lead.
Sun 10 Sep 2023 · 08:02Reply
@carvalhoCAP @treeruss @old_school_alps @clissoldpeople The purpose is twofold: 1. Protect the ecology of Abney. You don’t seem to think or accept it’s being disturbed or damaged by dogs off-lead, and question the negative impact dogs off-lead have on Abney. 2. Respect a historic burial ground by not having dogs running on graves.

@carvalhoCAP @treeruss @old_school_alps @clissoldpeople Also, there are many more dogs around Abney nowadays than 20 years ago. Pre-Lockdown In 2019/20 there were about 9 million pet dogs in the UK, by 2021/22 that had risen to 13 million. statista.com/statistics/515…

@carvalhoCAP @treeruss @old_school_alps @clissoldpeople But there is. There’s growing understanding and recognition of the need to protect the ecology. Recognition that didn’t exist in the past. Just because people didn’t care and pay attention in the past to something, doesn’t mean they should keep doing so today. Attitudes change.

@carvalhoCAP @treeruss @old_school_alps @clissoldpeople “we used it as a park” - what does that actually mean though? It’s a garden-cemetery that morphed into a nature reserve with rich, diverse ecology. It’s not comparable to a public, green spaces like Clissold Park, Butterfield Green and Finsbury Park for example.

@carvalhoCAP @treeruss @old_school_alps @clissoldpeople “used it as a park and walked our dogs in” - no one is stopping you from walking a dog in Abney. The proposal is to have dogs on lead to protect the wildlife in a nature reserve as well as respecting a site that’s a burial site with 60,000 graves. It’s really very simple.

@carvalhoCAP @old_school_alps @clissoldpeople But like Abney Park it’s a nature reserve with wildlife, which dogs off lead can disturb, hence the proposal. The real difference, which you keep ignoring for some reason, is that Abney Park is still a cemetery with 60,000 graves where 200,000 people are buried.

@carvalhoCAP @clissoldpeople Why? The fact you, and other have been able to have dogs off leads in Abney, doesn’t mean it hasn’t and didn’t have a negative impact, and therefore the status quo should be kept. Some would argue it’s taken too long to propose this measure.

@clissoldpeople @carowoodley Ok. So after all those meetings after the years, is any change in sight? Improving the public realm around it is great, but if remains a green island that’s a street drinking hotspot, that’s a real shame. Do you see that changing at any point? Thanks.

@clissoldpeople @carowoodley It would give locals a reason to visit a green space that’s otherwise occupied by street drinkers. As I said, it’s not ideal, but better than the current situation and is just one option. If people don’t visit, street drinkers move in and ‘claim’ it. That’s the real issue.

@owainwood Islington. Only the north side of the road where the Mildmay Club and Newington Green Meeting House are is in Hackney. @clissoldpeople @carowoodley Might not be ideal, but ultimately given it’s in my observation often a street drinking hotspot for 5-8 people, anything that can help reclaim it for locals should be considered. Community events and activists should definitely be the priority, but reclaiming it is the goal IMO.

@wonderfullyarty On balance and considering the bigger picture and the need to improve air quality and road safety I think when concessions can be made they are made. Is there a different solution you think is better and preferred out of interest? Exempt Blue Badge from all LTNs for example?
Mon 04 Sep 2023 · 12:51Reply
@jonjamesmiller A number of factors of course, especially now, are affecting people’s spending. One shop told me they’ve seen 20% increase in orders in the last year, though attributing that to one factor is impossible. Increased footfall may very well be one contributing factor.
Mon 04 Sep 2023 · 12:48Reply
@wonderfullyarty Every address in Stoke Newington Church St, like every address in any street in any LTNs can be accessed by car 24/7. Depending where you start your journey from it may be longer by car. LTNs are just cul-de-sacs, not pedestrianised streets. Definitely not car free. Far from it.
Mon 04 Sep 2023 · 12:43Reply
@wonderfullyarty Car free? Stoke Newington Church St is not a “car free” street. None of the LTNs are. There’s daytime restriction in Church St on through traffic only, though local blue badge holders can register one vehicle to be exempt. Car free would be a pedestrianised street. Not the case.

@joshrwhitehead @AbneyParkN16 I visit Abney often and see a wide variety of people visiting. Some are dog walkers, some cycle, some are families, young families, couples, people on their own, people visiting graves. I wouldn’t make up numbers about the % breakdown though. Highly subjective impression.
Sun 03 Sep 2023 · 20:48Reply
@joshrwhitehead @AbneyParkN16 “The stat is from someone who walks their dog in the cemetery every day. I see it with my eyes.” - that’s how you came up with the claim that “+80% of users of Abney are dog walkers”? O….K.
Sun 03 Sep 2023 · 20:46Reply
@joshrwhitehead @AbneyParkN16 It’s not about your claim that “99% of dogs are well behaved” which is irrelevant in this instance. Abney Park is a cemetery. 200,000 are buried there and many families still tend some of the 60,000 graves there. Why ignore that important fact and think only of dogs?
Sun 03 Sep 2023 · 20:43Reply
@joshrwhitehead @AbneyParkN16 “99% of dog owners pick up after their dogs” - not when the dog is running around and out of sight among the graves and bushes. Dog owners far more likely to clean after their dog when they are with it.
Sun 03 Sep 2023 · 20:42Reply
@joshrwhitehead @AbneyParkN16 “My point is dog walkers are the main users of Abney Park” - on what basis are you making this point exactly? How do you know? Where’s the +80% you said previously? Was it just a made up figure?

@helkala @AbneyParkN16 You can ask the council to comment on how and when it introduces and updates Dog Control Public Space Protection Orders. The fact the regulation didn’t cover Abney doesn’t mean it was the right this to do, and maybe it’s simply a matter of “better late than never”.

@helkala @AbneyParkN16 “The proposal to keep dogs on leads in Abney aligns with the existing regulations for churchyards in Hackney.” - Do you think Abney, a cemetery with 60,000 graves is different from churchyards, or that this regulation is “nonsense” overall in any burial ground in Hackney?

@helkala @AbneyParkN16 An acoustic performance in the chapel now and then in front of 80 people isn’t quite Leeds Festival :) the cafe, educational and workshop spaces and restored chapel are desperately needed sources of income for Abney. What does that have to do with dogs on or off leads?
