@DoomedL57196 @TollingtonLTN @IslingtonNorth @IslingtonBC @RowChampion @Flo_williamson @CycleIslington @LabourCycles @jeremycorbyn @theJeremyVine I’m there often. There are clearly marked “exit routes” and many drivers simply make a right or left turn, depending on which side of the Bus Gate they are. The turns are just before the Bus Gate. Not as many 3 point turn as you might think. How often are you there? https://t.co/gPoOmUpUz2

@QuigleyE4 What land? Parking bays you mean? Those bits of the public highway, which can be used for various purposes and are not reserved only to park private cars? Is that the ‘land’ you’re referring to?

@RantyHighwayman @LikeEngineer @psimonk With mapping apps becoming more popular, drivers are automatically diverted from closed roads so I think the likelihood of driving through “no motor vehicles” signs will only reduce over time. Plus, they are becoming more and more common now.
Sat 21 Oct 2023 · 09:21Reply
@LikeEngineer @RantyHighwayman @psimonk 2021 - “Almost a third of drivers think 'no motor vehicles' sign means 'cars and motorcycles only'” Red + Circle = Not allowed. That’s extremely basic, even if you don’t recognise the specific sign. Blue circle = Only. Confusing the two is worrying. road.cc/content/news/t…
Sat 21 Oct 2023 · 09:20Reply
@LikeEngineer @RantyHighwayman @psimonk Again, my point is that it’s not permitted/possible as far as I’m aware to use a NO ENTRY sign when there’s entry for emergency services, bin lorries etc. Its usage doesn’t include such flexibility, whereas “no motor vehicles” does.
Sat 21 Oct 2023 · 09:15Reply
@LikeEngineer @RantyHighwayman @psimonk I agree that a No Entry sign is likely more recognisable, however as I wrote, I think because there are often exemptions for emergency services, buses, bin lorries, Blue Badge holders etc. a No Entry sign cannot be used when such exemptions exist.
Sat 21 Oct 2023 · 09:06Reply
@LikeEngineer @RantyHighwayman @psimonk So would you suggest reviewing the entire Highway Code to identify signs that “most people may not understand”? :) in Hackney and Islington especially, “No motor vehicle” signs are now EVERYWHERE and very common.
Sat 21 Oct 2023 · 08:58Reply
@LikeEngineer @RantyHighwayman @psimonk Getting a fine is one way of educating people.
Sat 21 Oct 2023 · 08:56Reply
@LikeEngineer @RantyHighwayman @psimonk “I don't think enough drivers understand what it means” - anyone that holds a driving licence is required to know the meaning of road signs. I don’t think No Entry can be used when there are exemptions such as emergency vehicles and bin lorries.
Sat 21 Oct 2023 · 08:42Reply
@RantyHighwayman Ah! :) thanks. That’s what I expected two years ago in Stoke Newington Church St but it wasn’t possible because it’s 7am-7pm and there’s an exemption, so “no motor vehicle” and rainbow instead. https://t.co/WiAtbweQWS

@LundunFeeldz @clissoldpeople Are you aware of such level of direct influence by local businesses on a proposed street market anywhere else? I’d think the markets team have their process and criteria to determine which traders are suitable and appropriate given the surrounding commercial landscape, no?
Sun 15 Oct 2023 · 20:16Reply
@LundunFeeldz @clissoldpeople What I was told wasn’t reasonable is the expectation, some might go as far as saying ‘demand’, by some local businesses to be involved in deciding the makeup of the market and have a say to an extent that’s not permitted. They told the council they are OK if it’s vintage & vinyl.

Sun 15 Oct 2023 · 10:06Reply
@clissoldpeople It boils down to the simple fact the council took the view that from its street surveys in the summer of 2022, there was public backing for a market. Some local businesses expected to be much more directly involved in shaping the market than they were allowed to legally.
Sun 15 Oct 2023 · 10:04Reply
@clissoldpeople What actually happens in practice, according to the council from other street markets, is that local businesses benefit from them. Local businesses aren’t legally allowed to influence the plans for a local market, at least not by dictating who can and cannot trade in the market.
Sun 15 Oct 2023 · 09:47Reply
@clissoldpeople Worth pointing out the council’s vision for a street market in Church St, was very much based on the idea it’ll give local shops and restaurants space outside, which some don’t have today. As it would involve closing at least part of the street to traffic, I doubt it’ll happen.
Sun 15 Oct 2023 · 09:32Reply
@LundunFeeldz @clissoldpeople No. That’s not what I said. Some local businesses asked to be involved in deciding who can trade in the market. From what I was told, such direct involvement that can lead to anti-competition I presume, is illegal. The council’s markets team can provide a complete answer.
Sun 15 Oct 2023 · 09:24Reply
@clissoldpeople On the evidence of other council-run street markets in the borough, do you think some local businesses are right to be ‘protective’ if in the end, they may very well benefit from a popular street market on their doorstep? I think that’s the crucial point here.
Sun 15 Oct 2023 · 09:13Reply
@clissoldpeople I’ve spoken to several local businesses in Church St that are extremely supportive of the idea of a local street market. The local businesses community is extremely diverse in many ways, with different views on everything, from street markets to LTNs, dog-on-lead etc. etc. etc.
Sun 15 Oct 2023 · 09:10Reply
@clissoldpeople Some are, yes. The question is on the evidence of other street markets across the borough (e.g. Broadway, Chatsworth Rd), whether that feeling is justified or not. If the reality is a local street market increases footfall and benefits local shops, is the fear truly justified?
Sun 15 Oct 2023 · 09:06Reply
@clissoldpeople In any case, it would appear from what I’ve heard from one trader at least, the council could have managed the Church St Market better to make it succeed, so for now at least the so-called “problem to local businesses” has been averted I’d think.
Sun 15 Oct 2023 · 09:00Reply
@clissoldpeople In this particular instance from what I’ve gathered there are more things at play and ill feelings between the parties involved. Not something to elaborate on here but suffice to say everyone involved could have done better.
Sun 15 Oct 2023 · 08:57Reply
@clissoldpeople They certainly can object, of course. And you’d hope that’s considered as part of a consultation and planning process, but ultimately it’s not for them to decide or try to play a role in influencing and dictating the makeup of any new market in the area.
Sun 15 Oct 2023 · 08:56Reply
@_this_happens It’s a market of traders who are “external” to the street. Some of the local businesses who objected to a council-run street market in Church St complained about “outsiders” coming in and “selling their Essex cheese” in the area, “at the expense of local shops”.
Sun 15 Oct 2023 · 08:54Reply
@clissoldpeople Certainly, and I’m sharing my views here for others to read as you are sharing yours as part of an online discourse. There are different views like with anything. I don’t think the view of a local business necessarily carries more weight in this discussion. We’re all stakeholders
Sun 15 Oct 2023 · 08:48Reply
@clissoldpeople Indeed but other successful and well-established street markets in the borough are not and according to the council at least, haven’t posed a threat to the local businesses in the area and have actually benefited them by attracting visitors to shopping streets.
Sun 15 Oct 2023 · 08:42Reply
@YourSUVsucks @clissoldpeople From reading some of the objections some local businesses posted in Instagram comments and Twitter (10+ businesses or so), there was no data, more survival instinct that in certain cases felt mixed with general anti-council sentiment over LTNs for example.
Sun 15 Oct 2023 · 08:33Reply
@clissoldpeople From what I was told by someone from the council’s markets team, it’s actually illegal for local trades to influence the type of local market that’s proposed in their area, and evidence across the borough show street markets and local businesses benefit each other.
Sun 15 Oct 2023 · 08:30Reply
@clissoldpeople They are allowed to. The petition the SNBA ran and sent the council had 62 of the 64 businesses who responded, against a local street market unless its the type of market they approve of i.e. vintage. There are 116 businesses in Church St. 62 is a very slim majority at best.

@arsenal55559 @nonsense_stuff @AbneyParkN16 @clissoldpeople That online petition is rather meaningless. I seriously doubt anyone in the council consider it in any way as there’s public consultation. Anyone who objects to the proposal should reply to the consultation instead if they haven’t done so already.
Sat 14 Oct 2023 · 21:45Reply
@arsenal55559 @nonsense_stuff @AbneyParkN16 @clissoldpeople It’s not a referendum. The council doesn’t need to show it has a public majority to implement a policy. That’s not how local government works. Local government gets elected in elections. It uses consultations to gather views about proposals, which may impact them or not.

@arsenal55559 @nonsense_stuff @AbneyParkN16 @clissoldpeople An unhappy minority (200 followers on Instagram and 1,600 petitioners is a minority, yes) can be noisy, especially online. It’s ok to object and voice grievances as part a public consultation, but I don’t think it’s the massive issue you think it is ultimately.
Sat 14 Oct 2023 · 20:48Reply
@arsenal55559 @nonsense_stuff @AbneyParkN16 @clissoldpeople I have no doubt whatsoever that even if a dogs-on-lead only policy is introduced you’ll still see many dog walkers in Abney Park as well many other people who visit it. No need to panic. Abney Park will manage just fine.

Do share your ideas how to generate much needed income to maintain Abney Park, a 13-hectare nature reserve with 60,000 graves. If you care about it you don’t want to see it neglected. @AlexSherston @thenewlove Inflation? Cost of living crisis? People spending less these days? Businesses are affected by various factors, individually and collectively. Linking a decrease in sales solely to a daytime restriction on through traffic is extremely speculative at best.

@MillarCaroline @thenewlove Or you can even use someone’s photo 2 weeks BEFORE the bus gate was implemented in a tweet complaining how empty the street is on a Friday morning at 8am like this guy did :) x.com/StokeyUpdates/…

@RDOlivawIII @thenewlove I agree. Some people associate ‘vibrancy’ with an endless stream of noisy, polluting, dangerous through traffic, when in reality it’s people that make a place vibrant and pleasant. But then again, apparently we’re a ‘nation of drivers’ according to the PM 🤡 😂 🚗💨 🚗💨 🚗💨

@old_school_alps It’s this internet thing you see sometimes when a photo of people is used out of context to represent places, food, objects etc.

@RDOlivawIII Very much doubt that will happen given the relatively low traffic volume in Albion Road since the introduction of the daytime Bus Gate in Church St in Sep 2021. Also, it’s wide enough between Church St and Clissold Road in my experience to cycle safely.

@danlewer @ewcs0 Not when you live in Clapton, Stamford Hill or Stoke Newington. There are only 4 Overground stations (marked on the map) with the nearest Tube Stations being Manor House, Arsenal, Seven Sisters and Finsbury Park easily 30min walk from some properties in the area. https://t.co/8R1sZsv8uU

@DollyRotten The only other stations in the area are Stamford Hill (to the north), Rectory Road (to the south), Clapton (to the east), which could easily be more than 15min walk from certain properties, that in comparison are closer to Stoke Newington Station.
