Stoke Newington’s most famous bollard, Billy Bollard, has grown a bollard! Probably survival mechanism as too many drivers kept going on the pavement and hitting it. Have you seen such hybrid bollard before @WorldBollard?? https://t.co/0miY67V2zQ

@Microlambert @Roger89835988 @energy_fab I think that a crossing would definitely signal pedestrian priority bette than what’s there now. Is the expectation that cyclists stop when they see someone about to cross or just slow down to allow to them to cross safely? What does “priority” mean here exactly?
Thu 30 Nov 2023 · 13:31Reply
@Microlambert @Roger89835988 @energy_fab But I think the issue is people crossing from Nevill Road to Allen Road to go to Butterfield Green, either the entrance in Allen Road or Palatine Road. The row of trees makes no difference to that.
Thu 30 Nov 2023 · 13:28Reply
@Microlambert @Roger89835988 @energy_fab It’ll probably be better though than the ‘boy/girl’ markings there now. Is there another example to highlight the intersection between cycle and footpaths? If that’s even the goal here.

@Microlambert @old_school_alps @RorthronTheWise Well, in my experience there is an issue of collision given the number of time people jumped in front of me, completely oblivious to anything that was on the road, even if it wasn’t cars.

@Microlambert Is that compared to the ‘10,000 vehicles a day’ pre Bus Gate according to the council as I recall?
Mon 27 Nov 2023 · 09:50Reply
@Microlambert Any idea if that’s an increase over the last 2 years since the Bus Gate was introduced in Sep 2021?
Mon 27 Nov 2023 · 09:34Reply
@Microlambert Personally I think it’ll confuse the hell out of drivers, some of which are still getting used to the Bus Gate ;) again, is Church St really such a problem for cyclists post-Bus Gate still in your view that it requires some intervention like this one?
Mon 27 Nov 2023 · 09:24Reply
@Microlambert Ok. Got it. Thanks. But given the width of the Church St in most section it would make it look like a single lane for vehicles, no? Does it meet the minimum width requirement for such solution beyond the small section between the fire station and Defoe Road?
Mon 27 Nov 2023 · 09:17Reply
@Microlambert Again, cycling in Church St I never have to use the bell or avoid people walking carefree in the middle of the road unlike in Nevill Road, Oldfield Road and other backstreets in the area where that was often the case. People just walking in the middle of the road.
Mon 27 Nov 2023 · 09:14Reply
@Microlambert But there’s isn’t sufficient road space in most of Church St for a cycle path surely, or is the idea that vehicles are permitted to use it too if there aren’t cyclists?

@RorthronTheWise @Microlambert I’ll go with that
Mon 27 Nov 2023 · 08:35Reply
@RorthronTheWise @Microlambert If anything, after the Bus Gate was installed someone suggested removing the traffic lights in Church St. They were only added in the early 2000s by the way.
Mon 27 Nov 2023 · 08:30Reply
@RorthronTheWise @Microlambert It mostly narrow than not. Sounds like fixing a problem that doesn’t really exist in my opinion and creating a bigger one with traffic being held more often than it is already with the existing traffic lights.
Mon 27 Nov 2023 · 08:10Reply
@RorthronTheWise @Microlambert I experienced that cycling much more in the backstreets south of Church St than Church St itself personally. And I can’t see how anything can be done given the width of the road in most section, especially following pavement widening. https://t.co/wruMWPDGHL
Mon 27 Nov 2023 · 08:03Reply
@Microlambert Is it really needed given low traffic during the Bus Gate hours? Also, the width of the road changes quite considerably with the road being narrower west of the Bus Gate.

@karinacomms @AbneyParkN16 @hackneycouncil Personally, in the greater scheme of things, I don’t think 1,800 signatures is as a significant number as you think it is. Protecting a nature reserve and respecting a historic burial site will ultimately be the winning arguments I suspect.
Fri 24 Nov 2023 · 17:10Reply
@karinacomms @AbneyParkN16 @HeritageFundUK @hackneycouncil It was named Abney Park in the mid 1700s when it was a private arboretum behind a large mansion. That doesn’t mean anything in terms of whether pets such as dogs can be off lead, especially as since then it has become a historic cemetery and nature reserve.

@karinacomms @AbneyParkN16 @HeritageFundUK Wrong. It’s not a “small park”. It’s a 31-acre historic cemetery (60,000 graves with 200,000 people buried in them), which also a nature reserve. It’s expensive to maintain hence why revenue generating opportunities like the chapel are desperately needed to keep it going.
Fri 24 Nov 2023 · 14:13Reply
@karinacomms @AbneyParkN16 You’re making an unfounded assumption that a critical mass of visitors with dogs to the park will no longer step foot in Abney. I guess we’ll have to wait and see. Personally, I doubt the impact will be as detrimental as you describe, but like you, I’m only making an assumption.

@karinacomms @AbneyParkN16 What data specifically are you after? Number of fungi damaged by dogs off lead? Number of wildlife animals affected by dogs off lead for example? If dogs off lead have shown to have negative impact on other nature reserves, why do you think Abney Park is any different?

@London_UXD Definitely. Every proposed change to anything often leads to an online petition with about 1,500 signatures plus often a few shouty, angry people venting on Twitter and then the change is made and life goes on.
Fri 24 Nov 2023 · 13:40Reply
@London_UXD It’s a control order, not a banning order -> ‘Dog Control Public Space Protection Order’, but some people that don’t like the idea prefer to refer to it as a ‘ban’. It’s about controlling dogs. By the way, dogs ARE banned from Woodberry Wetlands; another local nature reserve.

@arsenal55559 That's not 'logic', that's your opinion. 'remained a successful and inclusive nature reserve' what does that actually mean? it's a 31 acre site. What qualified you to determine what impact dogs off-lead have on it as a nature reserve and cemetery?

@arsenal55559 You are missing the point of how academic studies work and the whole idea behind observing a phenomenon, such as negative impact of dogs off-lead on nature reserves, and concluding the same impact will likely be observed in other, similar settings.

@austerityhuh @willnorman Hopefully the work to improve Stoke Newington High St will start soon, which will possibly create a new southbound bus lane that cyclists will be able to use, as well as a northbound cycle lane. Till then, I cannot see what other options exist to improve C1 in Stoke Newington.

@Roger89835988 There are 149 commercial properties in Stoke Newington High Street. At a guess based on frequent strolls I’d say 5+ are vacant, with a couple of others being worked on at any point in time. Far from having rows of boarded-up shops. So I think vacancy rate is same as Church St.

Some people genuinely seem to think that a constant stream of noisy, polluting and dangerous through traffic makes a street ‘vibrant’. The reality is Church St has 116 businesses. The commercial vacancy rate is very low at 3%. People make a street vibrant, not through traffic. x.com/Michaelsmither…
