Most of the other ‘Magnificent 7’ cemeteries Abney is part of don’t allow dogs at all or only on a lead. Some people seem to forget Abney is a cemetery as well as a nature reserve.

It doesn’t mean it’s in public ownership with 260,000 shareholders that get a vote on everting to do with it. It is managed by an elected council that considers various factors.

@stilwelltc1 The chapel is an events venue, not the entire site. I don’t see why that’s relevant here. Abney is on Historic England’s register of parks and gardens of historic interest. Really not your typical urban park despite ‘park’ being in the name since the early 1700s.

Waiting for someone to argue that “Freedom of Movement” also applies to dogs being allowed off-lead anywhere, the same way it applies to drivers and grants them the “basic freedom” to drive through any street at any time.

@London_UXD If anything, I’d think that having a person WITH a dog makes an area safer and improves visibility of people in a wooded area than a dog running around on its own.

@stilwelltc1 Yes but it’s a 31-acre burial site nonetheless. Dogs aren’t allowed off-lead in any other burial ground in Hackney. Why should it be any different in Abney? It’s also a nature reserve and the negative impact dogs off lead have on nature reserves has been observed and documented.

@ND44BZ “monetise the place”? Abney Park is expensive to maintain. Where do you think the money is coming from? Would you rather pay a fiver to visit Abney every time to pay for its upkeep? Making Abney financially sustainable should be a priority for anyone who cares for it in my view.

@AbneyParkN16 @VictoriaLART Fire and vandalism gutted the Chapel and for years it was on Historic England’s ‘Heritage at Risk’ Register. If a security camera helps ensure that doesn’t again, I think it’s worth it.

@MulreadyMolly Yes. Do check every resource about Abney Park Cemetery. Opened in 1840. 60,000 graves where 200,000 people were buried till 1975 when the company that ran the cemetery went bust.
