People who think that because Abney Park has “Park” in it, it means it’s a park in the same sense as Clissold or Finsbury are parks, need to be reminded the name is 300 years old when it was a private garden. It doesn’t automatically mean dogs have the right to be off-lead there.

Fri 15 Dec 2023 · 12:49Reply
@unmariuss @AbneyParkN16 @karinacomms “Abney Park is very much in public ownership, yes.” - Where did you get that from? Do you consider every asset that’s owned and managed by the council to be in ‘public ownership’?
Fri 15 Dec 2023 · 12:46Reply
@unmariuss @AbneyParkN16 @karinacomms Yes. The point is that it’s dogs/pets aren’t automatically allowed into cemeteries. Most of the other ‘Magnificent 7’ cemeteries Abney is part of don’t allow dogs at all or only on a lead. Some people seem to forget Abney is a cemetery as well as a nature reserve.
Fri 15 Dec 2023 · 12:43Reply
@unmariuss @AbneyParkN16 @karinacomms Public space means it’s for the use of the public, and isn’t a private space that can exclude people. It doesn’t mean it’s in public ownership with 260,000 shareholders that get a vote on everting to do with it. It is managed by an elected council that considers various factors.
Fri 15 Dec 2023 · 12:41Reply
@unmariuss @AbneyParkN16 @karinacomms “All residents own Abney park through the Council.” - That’s an “interesting” way of looking at things. I suppose then we all also own all the council housing in the borough, the roads, the schools and everything else the council owns and manages?

@unmariuss @AbneyParkN16 @karinacomms “not to automatically assume there is something to be protected against” - What does that mean? It’s a cemetery with 200,000 buried in it. That’s a fact. It being a nature reserve is also a fact. The risk dogs off lead pose to wildlife there is something some people dispute.

@karinacomms @AbneyParkN16 @HeritageFundUK @hackneycouncil The questions in the survey aren't leading, but the underlying approach in it in my opinion, views Abney as if it's just another public park like Clissold Park or Finsbury Park, when it's more much akin to Woodberry Wetlands and Highgate Cemetery for example.
Thu 14 Dec 2023 · 21:50Reply
@karinacomms @AbneyParkN16 @HeritageFundUK @hackneycouncil Read it. Why no questions about nature reserve and cemetery status? "Are you aware Abney park is a nature reserve?"
"What are your thoughts on the impact of dogs being off lead in a nature reserve?"
"What are your thoughts on the impact of dogs being off lead in a cemetery?"
Thu 14 Dec 2023 · 21:23Reply
@karinacomms @AbneyParkN16 @HeritageFundUK @hackneycouncil I look forward to do that but it doesn’t alter the fact that feedback should be provided through the consultation website. Who are you planning to submit the survey to? Is such external survey considered as part of the consultation process?
Thu 14 Dec 2023 · 20:41Reply
@AbneyParkN16 @karinacomms @HeritageFundUK @hackneycouncil I doubt you'll get an answer as objectors seem unconvinced that allowing dogs off-lead poses a threat to Abney Nature Reserve, or that it disrespects cemeteries such as Abney by permitting dogs to roam freely, potentially defecating on monuments while out of sight of their owner.

@Jim_Goodwin @tomsdinner @VanessaLinehan @RantyHighwayman @carowoodley A Blended Crossing is designed to let pedestrians know they have priority and they can carry on crossing because they have priority over vehicles. Admittedly, they are more common in Europe and UK drivers will hopefully get used to blended crossings over time.

@Jim_Goodwin @tomsdinner @VanessaLinehan @RantyHighwayman @carowoodley The point I was making is that drivers cannot complain about pedestrians ‘stepping out without looking’ because ultimately it’s down to drivers to make a turn slowly, possibly stopping, anticipating and looking out for pedestrians that have priority.
Sat 09 Dec 2023 · 11:30Reply
@Jim_Goodwin @tomsdinner @VanessaLinehan @RantyHighwayman @carowoodley I get it too, and as I pointed out earlier, the blended crossing is different than the ones in Church St for some reason, and I think the ones in Church St are better. It’s not about cars vanishing in this case though, it’s about slowing them down/stopping when making a turn. https://t.co/qAULnrIPRb
Sat 09 Dec 2023 · 11:13Reply
@Jim_Goodwin @tomsdinner @VanessaLinehan @RantyHighwayman @carowoodley It’s basic hazard perception. You get all sorts of people and animals jumping into the road in residential areas. At least at a crossing you have a reason to expect that. No should turn in/out of a street without carefully looking it’s safe to so, blended crossing or not.
Sat 09 Dec 2023 · 11:10Reply
@Jim_Goodwin @tomsdinner @VanessaLinehan @RantyHighwayman @carowoodley Drivers, even not the most experienced, do/should expect pedestrians to step out and cross a street, and that’s been happening since forever, which is why (good) drivers slow down when turning in/out of a street. Blurring the pavement/road boundary is designed to slow drivers.

@Jim_Goodwin @tomsdinner @VanessaLinehan @RantyHighwayman @carowoodley A driver isn’t meant to consult the Highway Code, because the driver has a driving licence and should know that pedestrians have priority when crossing a street. Very basic stuff. A blended crossing is only meant to reinforce that.
Sat 09 Dec 2023 · 09:24Reply
@tomsdinner @VanessaLinehan @RantyHighwayman @carowoodley But even in Church St the crossing is blended with the pavement and the difference is the markings on the road. Is that what you think is needed to improve things? I agree that compared to Church St, Clissold Crescent/Albion Rd may overall feel now less like a crossing. https://t.co/nnhTnQpttv
Sat 09 Dec 2023 · 09:17Reply
@Jim_Goodwin @tomsdinner @VanessaLinehan @RantyHighwayman @carowoodley Pedestrians have priority regardless of whether there’s blended crossing or not though. Blended crossings are designed to slow down vehicles and encourage drivers to give way to pedestrians crossing the road, thus reinforcing the rules of the Highway Code.

@tomsdinner @VanessaLinehan @RantyHighwayman @carowoodley Pedestrians have priority crossing a road and the blended crossing is simply meant to reinforce that. I get your point, but drivers and bikes should have allowed pedestrians to cross regardless of whether there’s blended crossing or not, no?

@stilwelltc1 The chapel is an events venue, not the entire site. I don’t see why that’s relevant here. Abney is on Historic England’s register of parks and gardens of historic interest. Really not your typical urban park despite ‘park’ being in the name since the early 1700s.
Mon 04 Dec 2023 · 11:36Reply
@stilwelltc1 Where are those set out officially though? From that I could gather from the council it’s defined as a nature reserve and a historic cemetery. The fact dogs have been allowed off-lead for as long as they have, doesn’t mean it was the right thing and shouldn’t be challenged.
Mon 04 Dec 2023 · 11:32Reply
@stilwelltc1 “Dog fouling is always solved by pickup” - Are you saying owners go after a dog that’s off-lead, running around, and pick up after them? Half the time you hear people shouting for their dog. I seriously doubt they are looking out to see if there’s poo to pick up anywhere.
Mon 04 Dec 2023 · 11:30Original
Waiting for someone to argue that “Freedom of Movement” also applies to dogs being allowed off-lead anywhere, the same way it applies to drivers and grants them the “basic freedom” to drive through any street at any time.
Mon 04 Dec 2023 · 11:26Reply
@London_UXD If anything, I’d think that having a person WITH a dog makes an area safer and improves visibility of people in a wooded area than a dog running around on its own.
Mon 04 Dec 2023 · 11:24Reply
@stilwelltc1 What are those four purposes by the way? It’s a historic, soon-to-be-disused cemetery and a nature reserve. The council’s view is that dogs-off-lead have a negative impact on it as a nature reserve. What part of that claim do you dispute please?
Mon 04 Dec 2023 · 11:23Reply
@stilwelltc1 I still don’t understand the argument that a disused cemetery, where 200,000 people are buried and relatives visit, should be a place where dogs off lead for example are free to run around, poo on graves etc. Shouldn’t it be respected like other burial local burial sites?
