@tpaleyfilm But it’s not closing. I totally get the concern it MIGHT close, depending on what a future owner of the Grade II listed building will have in mind and can get approved by the council’s planning department, but it could very well remain a pub, possibly similar to what it is now.

The Rochester Castle, which has been put up for sale recently, is one of three local pubs that are on the market. The other two are the Coach & Horses and Hackney Den (Hare & Hounds, Satchmo’s, The Palatine, Scenario, Escape, Loading). Hackney Den has been closed for months.

@blahblahkatie_ I totally get that and agree. My question was about the wording of the petition and making it clear who is the intended recipient of the petition and what is being asked of them. I don’t think that’s communicated well. The council has no say about its character as a pub.

@blahblahkatie_ In case of a potential planning application for change of use by a future owner? If so, it’s not clear from the description of the petition. A new owner could probably change it in various ways, while still technically keeping it a pub though.

@blahblahkatie_ It’s not closing. From the Hackney Gazette: “Wetherspoon has now officially confirmed the move, and said the pub would continue to trade “as normal” until the sale.” It’s future once sold is unknown and it may remain the same like some other pubs Wetherspoon sold recently.

@old_school_alps Given the new ones are just road markings with a small sign, so low cost to install and maintain, hopefully the council will turn more vehicle parking bays into cycle hire bays. I think the plan is to have one in almost every street.

@AkashMapara By the way, the chapel isn’t different in that sense from other local, council-run historic event venues like Clissold House (certain rooms) and the Town Hall that aren’t open to the public. The chapel will help raise much needed revenue for maintaining Abney Park.

@AkashMapara It might open now and then for general, public access and I’m sure it’s a delicate balancing act between allowing the public to enjoy and appreciate the restored chapel, and at the same time protect it from those who’d love to “leave their mark” on it. Plenty of those sadly.

@AkashMapara I’m sure @AbneyParkN16 can provide more details about the consideration and access to the restored chapel. There may be opportunities to visit the chapel such as an Open House event for example or days when there’ll be guided tours of the chapel perhaps.

@AkashMapara It’s not open to the public as far as I’m aware and is a council-run events venue. It isn’t that surprising considering the risk of damage to the expensive restoration from free access. Unfortunately, not everyone is going to be respectful and it has been vandalised in the past.
