@Hayleywhite16g1 Appeals are looked on a case by case basis. It’s not a blanket exemption for a certain type of services for example. Doing that would render the whole scheme useless eventually as justifying one exemption over another is impractical in my view.
Thu 25 Apr 2024 · 11:47Reply
@Hayleywhite16g1 @StokeyLTN All of the above are not exempt. They may feel they should be, but they are not.
Thu 25 Apr 2024 · 11:21Reply
@Hayleywhite16g1 Bin lorries and SEND school buses are. I’m not aware of any other exemptions. Where did you hear other council services are exempt or is it based on seeing them driving through filters. Any idea @StokeyLTN?
Thu 25 Apr 2024 · 11:19Reply
@Hayleywhite16g1 Emergency services are in contact with local councils about their exemptions and know the status, so it would be unnecessary to state it explicitly at every filter. The emergency services by the way is the reason Hackney doesn’t use bollards and has to use enforcement cameras.
Thu 25 Apr 2024 · 11:05Reply
@Hayleywhite16g1 So do car sharing schemes like Zipcar and Hiyacar. Should they also be exempt? What about Uber? We can easily end up with a long list in minutes and before you know it the exemption sign in each filter will be a metre long! :)
Thu 25 Apr 2024 · 10:54Reply
@Hayleywhite16g1 Too much traffic in general is the actual problem, especially with a ridiculous amount of very short car journeys people got used to over the years (and with the help of satnav apps), which should/could be often avoided to allow necessary traffic to flow more quickly.
Thu 25 Apr 2024 · 10:52Reply
@Hayleywhite16g1 Is the reg plate covered???
Thu 25 Apr 2024 · 10:51Reply
@Hayleywhite16g1 Diversions as a result of roadworks are part and parcel of modern living. Ensuring that as many streets as possible are as safe and less polluted as possible by reducing traffic is a goal that shouldn’t be undervalued.
Thu 25 Apr 2024 · 10:47Reply
@Hayleywhite16g1 Again, I think that once you start making exemptions you’re inviting a flood of requests, that someone somewhere will need to start dealing with, and before you know if the goal of improving road safety and air quality etc. in backstreets (primarily) goes out the window.
Thu 25 Apr 2024 · 10:37Reply

Thu 25 Apr 2024 · 10:16Reply
@Hayleywhite16g1 The solution isn’t an exemption for delivery vans cutting through backstreets. If you make that exception you open the floodgates and many other groups will rightly feel they also have a “legitimate reason” to be exempt from traffic calming measures.
Thu 25 Apr 2024 · 09:57Reply
@Hayleywhite16g1 By the way, anyone can claim an “emergency”. Taxi drivers, any individual with a vehicle that “has” to get somewhere quickly and feels they have a valid reason to cut through backstreets and so on and on. If you use “emergency” as the criteria, everyone will have a story.
Thu 25 Apr 2024 · 09:54Reply
@Hayleywhite16g1 So because of the chance it’s an emergency all delivery vans should be exempt? What kind of emergency parcels are you think about by the way? If delivery companies organise deliveries by LTN zones for example it really would be such an issue.
Thu 25 Apr 2024 · 09:38Reply
@Hayleywhite16g1 Why? They are delivering parcels, not emergency blood donation. I can think of 20 other groups that would argue they should also be exempt, and ahead of delivery vans for that matter.

Thu 25 Apr 2024 · 08:16Reply
@Hayleywhite16g1 Agree. Drop off also safer options given thieves you hear go through front gardens and porches looking for parcels that were left outside.
Thu 25 Apr 2024 · 08:03Reply
@Hayleywhite16g1 90%? How many have you seen in the last month for example? As prevalent as this criminal behaviour may be, I rarely see it myself and I’m out and about in the area a lot and actually look out for these sort of things!! :)
Thu 25 Apr 2024 · 07:58Reply
@Hayleywhite16g1 Valid points as these may be, the solutions isn’t for delivery drivers to commit criminal offence by covering their reg plates and ignore road signs. Some delivery companies are adapting and innovating to deal with changes, and some don’t and this is what you get as a result.

@_this_happens @AbneyParkN16 Is it not? As the Trust is in regular contact with council officers, it may be able to provide an immediate answer like in this case, if it has an update from the council that wasn’t made public. I don’t think it’s such a big deal really :) I simply asked a question.
Sun 14 Apr 2024 · 11:21Reply
@PearceBranigan Consultation isn’t a referendum. It’s one of several ways to source opinions and concerns that may result in a proposal not going ahead or being adjusted to address the issues people raise. Also, objectors are also more likely to respond than those who are in favor or indifferent
Sun 14 Apr 2024 · 10:55Reply
@_this_happens @AbneyParkN16 As the direct conduit between residents and the council, I think it’s very reasonable to raise matters concerning Abney with the Trust, who’ll likely get a quicker response from the council than residents in my experience. @ak__shay I’m of the view that shopping streets should remain shopping streets. Having diverse local shopping options for people to walk or cycle to, is even more important now more than before in my view. I’d argue we need local shops, just as we need residential properties.
Sun 07 Apr 2024 · 10:34Reply
@ak__shay I don’t think there are any shops in Stoke Newington Road or Stoke Newington High St that were converted to a residential property, so I think in reality it’s highly unlikely.

It looks like renovation work is taking place on the shop at 115a Stoke Newington Road/Brighton Road. It’s been shut since at least 2008. Hopefully it’ll reopen as a shop and isn’t being turned into a residential property (if it isn’t one already). https://t.co/difErYMMrO

@LilyWaite_ Same with cafes. Only 9 of 112 shops in Church Street and 7 of 149 shops in the High St, but some people make it sound as if every other shop is a cafe… or a bakery.
Sun 07 Apr 2024 · 09:35Reply
@LilyWaite_ @Sidz_Mal You’d certainly think so :) also why the cake shop opposite the Coach & Horses wouldn’t qualify as one.
Sun 07 Apr 2024 · 09:34Reply
@LilyWaite_ The article is from 2021. I stumbled upon it, and the comment about bakeries is something that comes up here now and then. I think people use it to describe a quaint, twee area without realising there aren’t actually that many in reality.
Sun 07 Apr 2024 · 09:32Reply
@LilyWaite_ @Sidz_Mal Yes. There a few on Church Street but I don’t think they can be described as a bakery. A bakery is a place where bread and other baked goods are made, as well as cakes and pastries.
Sun 07 Apr 2024 · 09:28Reply

Where did the notion that Stoke Newington has 'lots of bakeries' originate from? There are only six, and they are scattered and very different. Is six a lot? - Akdeniz bakery - The Spence Bakery
- Super Baklava Niyazi Usta
- The Royal Bakery
- The Bagel House
- Luminary Bakery https://t.co/ZPI2066OB4
