@HowarthCharles Pret is more High St than Church St, so it’s a different proposition and clientele than Gail’s. But the point, in my view, is that the negative impact of such large chains on independents may be negligible, and also very difficult to assess given the other factors at play.

@HowarthCharles Businesses with 10+ outlets account for only 10% of the businesses on Church St. The street is overwhelmingly made up of independent businesses, some of which have been operating for many years. Personally, I doubt Gail’s will make any more difference than Pret did, for example.

@HowarthCharles But we’re not talking about the ‘original’ Gail’s that opening on the 28th. My sense is we’ll all still be queueing outside Spence after the 28th :) it’s getting warmer (just about!) so it’s less of an issue.

@HowarthCharles If you’re in the business of selling hot drinks, pastries, and sandwiches, I reckon you know there’s always likely to be a competitor, large or small, around the corner. It’s a highly saturated market, and differentiating yourself is paramount.

@HowarthCharles That’s your assumption, which may or may not be true. I think some visitors would actually be drawn to a local bakery with a queue that signals quality and high demand, especially from locals, which is a good indicator. I think Gail’s and Spence are very different propositions.

@HowarthCharles If you’re a business facing competition from a new entrant, I’m not sure you’d care whether it’s a ‘fellow’ independent like you or a chain. You’re probably more able to differentiate yourself from a chain than from another independent business.

@HowarthCharles You assume, though, that there will be competition in the first place. Given the character and offering of the small cafes etc., on Church St, I’m not sure that’s a foregone conclusion. By the way, which independents do you feel may be impacted the most by the arrival of Gail’s?

@HowarthCharles If two separate independent cafes had opened there instead of Gail’s, would that have been better, by the way? I wonder if they would have posed more significant competition to other similar independent cafes than Gail’s, as they are more directly comparable. What do you think?

@HowarthCharles Different people go to different shops, and some, for various reasons, prefer small independent cafés over Gail’s and similar chains. I also think some independent cafés and bakeries have a very loyal customer base, so the negative impact of Gail’s may be negligible.

@HowarthCharles It’s a unit that was originally two shops, so doubt many non-corporates could afford two shops in Church St essentially. It’s one of 123 commercial units in the street. Gail’s will be less than 1% of the street.
